Do you guys think virtual reality will be the future of technology? How long will it take to be integrated into society like smartphones were?
>>
It's already dead
>>

>How long will it take to be integrated into society like smartphones were?

consider how long smartphones took

I'm not sure where to draw the starting line (original blackberry? newton?) but it was a long wait between that and iPhone/Android-level market penetration
>>
>>54437710
I remember the Blackberry kind of started it a bit, and then when the iPhone came out everybody had one within a year

At least that was how it was where Iive
>>
>>54437668
>integrated into society
maybe never. I mean, why generic normie should spend $600 on a toy and then even more on proper PC? Wii Sports is cool even in 2d, and you can't even play party games in VR. For generic users, it's nothing more than a great, great arcade gimmick. Simulator players will probably love it though.

I'd love to see VR arcade machines and VR arcade places/clubs. I mean, this is how it worked when most people wasn't wealthy enough to buy a device for themselves.

Still, VR is fucking awesome. I rented DK2 and i still can't get over level of awesomeness, and recently i combined nvidia gamestream with tridef3d and opentrack and even if it's not even nearly as good as Rift, it's perfectly usable tool for racing games (and it's still impressive as fuck).
>>
VR is a meme.
>>
unlike smartphones "virtual reality" (which isn't even virtual reality, its a motion-tracking screen) has little practical use
>>
>>54437710
Comparing smartphones with similar Technological (revolutions?), they came in pretty relatively in my opinion.
I don't think VR will ever do the same. I think some business will (and probably already do) use them for hands on training and a small percentage of people will use them for gaming (I might be one of them soon) but they'll never be common.
The tech is awesome and far less glitchy than I expected but it's just not something I see people taking to.

The Wii was cool for a few weeks and then it just died in the ass. (In Australia at least) I think this'll be the same.
>>
>>54437739
So we have to wait until Apple makes VR goggles? Seems that way with smart watches as well
>>
>>54437868
relatively quickly*
>>
>>54437878
Oh, god. I think this is probably terrifyingly accurate
>>
>>54437668
Given that alot of people have already shelved their headsets a few days after getting them...I'd say that it probably will never be the future of technology.
>>
>>54437878
>apple VR
>experience glorious 800x480 stretched on your entire field of view because 90% of computers we sold can't handle anything more with their intels hd4000

nah. I mean, of course apple would "revolutionize it", everything they touch turns to gold, but i don't think they have means to do it properly, at least other than ridiculously expensive bundles with some kind of processing machine.

>all of those retards who never had it on their heads and thinks it's a rectangular screen that's always in direction you're looking at

only big differences between looking at real world and looking at 2d screen are
>missing one dimension
>display is not moving with your head
>display is not adjusting camera position relatively to your head
>there is no blur from your eye lens when looking at two things in contrasting distances

VR fixes three of four problems, and lens blur is not that important for first generations anyway.

I'm seeing so many reports of people having trouble focusing after using VR, and Sony is asking their consumers to not allow kids under the age of 12 to use it since kids with underdeveloped eyes will definitely be affected.

Stop trying to act like facts are not facts. VR is going to hurt your eyes and apparently your brain since you're viewing things from a completely different perspective than in real life.

here, your options for content are literally (no hyperbole here)

1) oculus home/ steamvr games (walking simulators)
2) wii/psp emulation (~30 obscure titles each)
3) virtual google-maps like videos
4) indie homebrew unity projects, which are all strangely as well-optimized and graphically demanding as the "real" VR games (which is to say they look like a load of me old dog's dinner)

I'll answer any questions you have about owning one of these things though

Also, I hear SteamVR is compatible and even prompting Oculus users to install SVR, thank God.

There isn't any VR content available for the base model setup, I'd be a hopeless optimist to assume that adding a peripheral to the mix and splitting the userbase will attract more (or any) developers.

Sorry anon, your $600 princess may be in another castle.
>>
>>54438534
You dumb motherfucker, you're not understanding how the eye is focusing

Your eyes aren't focusing on the screen 5 centimeters away, that's physically impossible, they're focusing on the virtual objects in the game like would with real life objects the same distance away

Why is this concept so hard to understand? Has the average /g/ poster really gotten this damn stupid in the past 6 years?

>look out leftmost window into open field as I hit the highway
>shit bricks

I literally felt like I was there. If you wish to be a professional truck driver, maybe the cost of entry makes that feeling worth it for you?

If all games were held to that standard, or if more of them existed, then more people would hopefully be thrilled with the tech.

I'm not sure what tridef/iz3d is but you can do a lot of things with virtual desktop (which is on steam) I'm pretty sure you can use that to pull up nearly anything that's on your computer. It also allows you to wrap the screen so it surrounds you.

You need to be running steamvr to use it, but for outside sources they just come as a .exe and you run it like a program.

seriously? you that stupid that u think people who smart enough not to fell for this shit don't know that it tracks your head movement? It has been clear to have such "innovation" since the day your phone started to change its screen when you turn it clockwise, nothing unexpected in your shitty VR glasses: you get two monitors in front of your eyes and yes this shit tracks your head movements that's it. With it you get even worse eye damage than staring at your PC screen because at least you can change focus to distant thing when u look at 2d screen and you cant do this with so called VR. The true VR will be when we be able to send visual signals to brain avoiding eyes. And what you are buying now is a scam so go for it. Dumb people make smart people rich, nothing new.

Rift tracking requires you to sit in one place. You can move around your chair, but that's it, nothing more. Vive tracking system can cover something around 2x2m room.
>>
>>54439327
He might be referring to room scale, which really does add a lot to the experience. The Rift currently is a sit down device, which works great with it's games. It also does have the two most real games. Everything on the Vive so far is either something like mini golf or some other kind of mini game or an "experience".

Hardware wise they are about the same, except for their tracking and Rifts built in audio.
>>
>>54439304
Mostly SPT, The Lab arrow demo, and Holo Ball. Only had it a week so I don't feel the need to buy more games really. Waiting for Hover Junkers to go on sale among others. I plan to try Project Cars with Revive but I've been really lazy about setting it up where my desk is. I wish HTC would just sell extra base stations already.

>>54439327
The big difference is that the Vive is built for room scale. Oculus can technically do it but not well. Tests are showing that even if you set the trackers in opposing corners you still won't have the same range and accuracy as the Vive. And as someone that has a 15 x 10 ft space I feel like even that isn't enough. And room scale is a big part of VR, if you have the space for it there's no reason not to have the option.

You may as well bitch that a computer monitor is a tool for sexual release as well

Please kindly fuck off to whatever church you crawled out of
>>
>>54439460
The internet isn't a gimmick though, it's an information highway where you can not only learn things in an instant, but also connect with people from other cultures.

Yeah, I'm an advocate against pornography, but VR has very little uses right now beyond it's sexual potential and it's pretty disgusting.
>>
>>54439448
Assetto Corsa is being worked on apparently. The dev said no but people got angry so now they have a Vive.

Project Cars is getting official support but you can play it right now with Revive.

DCS will get support soon.

Not so much into sims so those are the ones I know about.
>>
>>54439406
The Vive can do sit down as well as roomscale, however Oculus use their locked down store. A lot of the games like Chronos and Eve Valkyrie are exclusive to Rift. Project Cars is Rift only right now. You can get around it with a program, but Oculus will probably patch it soon.
>>54439448
That's along the lines of Project cars.

>>
>>54439480
It's actually really light, lighter than a racing helmet that you have to try to keep upright while plowing through a corner on a track
>>
>>54439476
Different tracking system, that's it. For now VR systems are mostly fighting with software/available games, not technology (which is retarded, such a fragile hype and yet they can't even agree on any kind of api compatibility).
>>
>>54439497
no i remember reading somewhere on /g/ something like the vive has 540 degree view and the rift 360 or something like that and then i read something that made the rift superior and then thought to myself that it will be very hard to choose between the two when the time comes
>>
>>54439427
And I want a job but not like these things grow on trees.
>>
>>54439476
You can't go by specs. All of it is really subjective. Resolution is the same for both. Vive has a bigger FoV but more SDE. Rift has less FoV with less SDE. People say the "god ray" artifacting on the Vive is less noticeable over the Rift. The Rift has a lighter headset with integrated audio. The Vive has a camera and lets you use your own headphones. There's trade offs with all of it.

But actually what >>54439497 said is right. All of it is really minor. The biggest thing is the tracking. So just like I said in my first post, Vive if you have space and Oculus if you don't.
>>
>>54439495
>Depictions of a sexual nature are older than civilization as depictions such as the venus figurines and rock art have existed since prehistoric times.
>In early times, erotic depictions were often a subset of the indigenous or religious art of cultures and as such were not set aside or treated differently than any other type. The modern concept of pornography did not exist until the Victorian era

>>
>>54439476
I don't have specs, but:

The Rift is lighter.
The Rift is slightly better in terms of SDE.
The Rift has better clarity around the edges of the lenses.
The Rift's "god rays" are smooth; the Vive's show the grooves in the Fresnel lenses.
The Rift has built-in headphones; the Vive has a cable to plug in your own headphones.
The Vive comes with motion controllers; the Rift does not (though you will be able to buy them separately at some later point).

Basically, get a Vive if you can't wait for motion controllers, or if you hate Facebook. Buy a Rift if you just care about seated/sim experiences, or you're willing to wait for touch controllers.
>>
>>54439594
If they do, it's fucking amazing. I really, really doubt it though. I mean, they are not even saying anything about tracking camera, it looks like everything you get is device with screen and lenses.
>>
>>54439598
what are god rays and grooves in fresnel lenses?
>>
>>54439591
>how much space do i need for the vive?

As much as you can get. I'd say if you can't clear a 8ft by 8ft area then don't bother. Get a Rift. Their trackers should work within that space. Most games seem to require at least 6ft by 6ft minimum
>>
>>54439631
"God rays" is a term that I've seen used to describe glare on the lenses.

I can't post examples, because 4chan thinks my post is spam, but just search for "oculus god rays", "oculus glare", and similar searches for Vive to see what I mean.

A Fresnel lens is a kind of flat lens.

The resolution is AWFUL. Hahaha. Has anyone tried this shit? There's a reason all the 'games' are cartoony low poly bullshit. Any real games look like garbage if you try to look in the distance or try to look at textures up close. Why'd they even come out with this if the GPU tech to drive a decent res wasn't ready yet? Now VR is going to fail and we'll have to wait 5 years until someone can get funding for another go at it.
>>
It's gonna take a while man.

For that life changing experience, we need stronger and more affordable PCs in order to get the best graphics we can at the highest resolution and framerate.

After that, it's just a matter of developers creating something that people are interested in experiencing.

I imagine VR will be VERY popular in the next few years, but won't go full mainstream until PCs are powerful enough.
>>
>>54442196

They need to be powerful and cheap. Most people aren't willing too spend more than $300-600 on a computer sadly.
>>
The newest GearVR is insanely good with the S7E, games like Smash Hit and Dead Secret look pretty gud for mobile GPU.

Hope their motion controllers are good, that's where it's really lacking right now.
>>
Has any of you tried the Playstation VR? I won't pay $800 for a VR headset. That's what I pay for my car in a year... 400 is more reasonable if it's good.
>>
Phones will be used more for VR movies / simplisticly controlled cut scene based game.

With a good PC, the cable suspended above head and gym mats under foot for Vive type platform defence games. But until we can walk around on a smart treadmill and be able strafe and roll, so we need wireless VR helmets and a moving WWE ring, they are designed to take impact without causing injury. So virtual Holodecks are at least 10 years away

Many times great strides are made in technology because pornography becomes available and easily obtained and exploited via the new technological medium, e.g. VHS et al, the internet.
>>
I think current gen VR will be very popular with techies/gamers/professionals once the price comes down a bit and the specs improve a little bit. I think within 3-5 years it will have sold maybe 10 million units worldwide, in 10 years maybe 100 million. But the real explosion in popularity on the level of smartphones won't come until the experience is both much more lifelike and more accessible, for example sense of touch and macro movement is something that must be supported. That's something I don't think we'll get to without direct brain/nerve implants or something like that. It will take some time, how long I have no idea.

The scientists played "movies," which were actually a series of moving discs that resembled movements of mantis prey. “It would look like a juicy insect was hovering right in front of them,” Read said.

If they did have 3-D vision, the mantis would only strike when its “prey” appeared to be about 0.8 inch (2 centimeters) in front of its face.

That’s exactly what Read and her team recorded.

Probably a while. This shit is still way too expensive (and a little cumbersome) to be picked up by normal consumers. Also, there just isn't too much out for VR right now (game wise). Developers still need to make cool shit - almost all the stuff that is out right now is made by indie people and small game studios.

A friend of mine has a Vive and I had a blast playing it last night, but the highest quality stuff was from Valve themselves. One larger game studios adapt this technology, I believe more people would be inclined to play with it.

But there is no short of interest for development, it's just going to take some time for more stuff to come out. My college campus is really big on VR (thanks brendan iribe) so maybe I'm a little biased, but I see a lot of innovation for VR here.

But one of the big things of this stuff catching on is whether or not business can use it, and I think they can. The porn industry is already exploring VR stuff with things like google cardboard and 360 videos (see: beta tapes and VHS) and actually my mom just told me something about how VR would be cool to use to demo real estate. So, this may take off, but it's going to be a while. This shit is still in the "innovators" phase but it's just getting a lot of attention.

almost or nearly as described, but not completely or according to strict definition.

Meaning, ALMOST reality. Not completely synthesized reality, nor a reality that is augmented. People miss this. VIRTUAL reality is a half-assed version of reality. Good, healthy, normal people don't care about that. The companies know this, which is why the biggest ones are pursuing AUGMENTING reality, which is the correct step in this direction. Virtually realized reality is for video gamers, the kind of people who want to shoot up schools, rape and/or post lewd pictures of children, and hurt and murder innocent, good people.

>Horrible strap system for HMD
>There needs to be an option to filter tracking movement in software
>steam desktop mode needs more extensive options, like floating overlay and distance setting.
>Too heavy, really tiring on the neck. Putting it on is a commitment.
>Resolution still not quite where I want it to be but tolerable.
>Cable is such a pain in the ass.
>Cannot boot the headset with the menu button on the side
>They should have added a second button to the HMD for confirmation so you can use it for menu navigation if not using motion controllers.

Some of the games on it are fun and I can appreciate the medium, but there hasn't been a single title I've been extremely sucked into.

My favourites so far are
>Quar Battle for Gate 18
>Vanishing Realms
>Space pirate trainer
>The Lab

Alt space VR was surprisingly good as well, though that is not a game. More of a metaverse social platform where you create an avatar and chat with people/ fuck around and play minigames with them.

Janus VR looks interesting as well, but I won't be using it until they implement room scale/teleportation support since trackpad locomotion makes me want to barf my innards.

Its funny, I'm starting find metaverse applications and other none game applications such as that human body point cloud scan and solar system exhibition more interesting than playing video games.

VR is going to stay shit for as long as they don't find a proper way to increase the field of view.
