Hello /g/
I found this terminal and was wondering if /g/ knows of any projects or uses for them.
Also, post any terminals, POS, or other technology you have that isn't normally sold to consumers besides businesses
You wanna make /g/ cry?
Smash it.
>>54415579
Hook it up to a *nix system, WYSE terminal keyboards are pretty nice.
>>54415777
Would /g/ really cry over a terminal? I'm from /k/ so I wouldn't know.
>>54415824
Lots of *nix users here have a fetish for them, just like having a nice little monitor dedicated to programming or whatever else text-mode stuff.
>>54415824
yes.
Install linux on it
>>54415579
Telnet into it, run lynx, load up ibm.com, pretend you're a hacker.
>>54415920
dumb terminals don't run an OS dumbass
How about a nice game of chess?
Install a BSD on an old computer and hook it up to a serial port. I think BSDs still output a console on serial. If not hook it up to a Sun.
>>54415928
I wasnt saying that they were
>>54416059
you said "install linux on it" senpai what else would you be alluding to?
>>54416071
I was awnsering if /g/ would cry over a terminal
>>54416093
english as a second language?
>>54415579
Wut
Yo take a picture of the rubber bracelet in the back pls
>>54415579
i wish i had a dumb terminal so bad

Thanks for the quick reply.
Got spooped for a second, looked identical to the one I'm wearing, lol.
>>54415579
You found it? FUCK people find shit they don't know even what to do with and I'm looking for a terminal and all I find are 500€ sales.
>>54416042
Modern Linuxes and other *nix, BSD's to too, even OS X.
>>54415778
>>54415922
>>54416042
Looks like I'll be needing a serial cable. Thanks for the ideas.
>>54418655
>>54416422
Yep there is a recycling center that took old electronics. I have collected a boatload of cool stuff there over the years.
>>54418876
Our recycling centers don't have shit like that... fuck
>>54415928
Eh, they sort of do. You could install the kernel itself with a basic set of commands if you knew what you were doing.
>>54418954
Not on the old ones.
I have this strange need to buy some old NCD/techntronix X-terminals and hook them up to a BSD server and play early 90's UNIX admin. The only thing that keeps me from doing it is knowing how the software keys work. Has anyone tried using the old Xterminals?
>>54418954
you could make them run an OS if you wanted to hack them up a little, yeah, but I don't think any of them could run Linux since they were mostly based on cheap 8 and 16-bit chipsets
some more advanced terminals like the VT103 probably could run Unix though if you configured it with some LSI-11 cards
>>54415579
The keyboard is nice and can be adapted to use with a regular PC.
The monitor is nice and if it is a color monitor can used for many old fashioned purposes.
You can always sell it for a couple of hundred dollars.
>>54419375
The keyboard keys don't match up with what it outputs. Must be different logic. I'd like to watch TV on it just for the sake if having a green screen TV. I've got a bunch of old b&w TV sets and I've been considering sticking the innards in the terminal but I don't want to fuck up the terminal tube
>>54415579

These terminal can often be connected to regular computers via a serial RS-232 interface.
You could have a full terminal (albeit, somewhat probably limited because of the antiquated display) running a bash session alongside your machine.

Just buy a second monitor. Jesus.
>>54419833
>>54419885
Neat. So all I need is a serial connection and BSD?
>>54420115
Why did you do this
>>54420047
I think so ! And a little bit of config. The procedure should be documented somewhere.
>>54420047
it doesn't need BSD
any UNIX-like will do
>>54419833
That's really cool.
>>54420275
>>54420047
You could even get a Ubuntu LiveCD and fire it up and it will work. Just plug the sucker into the serial port and go.
>>54415579
/g/ is a magical place where people just find stuff worth a months pay.
>>54420047
Pretty much any Unix or Unix-like will work, like
>Mac OS X
>Linux
>BSD
>Solaris
and so on, the latter two are "real" Unixes if you want the autismal experience
10 PRINT WELCOME TO ZOMBOCOM
20 GOTO 10
>>54415936
8.5/10 movie, I think Im gonna watch it again right now.
