wxMaxima is pretty good, depending on what you need it to do. I can do something like
load("plotdf")
plotdf([x^2-4*y,-y^3*(x-4*y*x)],[x,-10,10],[y,-10,10]);

to make something like pic related

It can also do symbolic differentiation and integrals and shit. For example
f(x,y,z) := x^3*y^2*z + (1/(z+x)) * 3*y;
f[xx] = diff(f(x,y,z),x,2);

that f[xx] (xx being the subscript) would be equal to the second order partial derivative with respect to x.

Honestly, Mathematica's plots are fucking ugly and inflexible. Mathematica is great for arbitrary precision math and symbolic stuff, and I use it myself like that, but for plots and data processing it is utter shit. Python with numpy, scipy and matplotlib is far easier to use (even though matplotlib is one of the shittiest library in existence, filled with inconsistencies and frustrating classes). And even if you prefer a somewhat polished GUI to go with it, I still would prefer MATLAB a thousand times over Mathematica for this purpose.
