Modern on board sound will destroy any sound card made prior to 3 years ago. They keep up with sound cards even made today unless you need 1/4" Jacks or are an audiophile

Sadly newer Intel chipsets don't support PCI and all motherboards these days don't have a PCI slot, so it's pretty much consigned to the history books

sure, connects them to the front and back connectors, then configure your system for 4.0 channel surround

You can't use it for surround because the VIA AC97 codec is inferior to the Wolfson 2ch DAC
The way to use the card is for stereo music, you connect the speaker cable to the black analog output nearest to the digital-out
That output is connected to the WM8728, follow the Head-Fi guide to set the control panel to output audio to that output and you get nice audio quality
