Why are there LITERALLY no solid laptops save for $2000 ultrabooks, old thinkpads, and macbooks?

My laptop was like $700 a few years ago and it's very solid, still works like a charm and has SSD and 1080p IPS display and an ivy bridge i5

It's Lenovo dude. How many spyware/malware scandals does a company have to have before you stop buying their shit? Lenovo is on at least 3 by the way.

7 is pretty solid if you stay away from certain updates. I'm running Linux on T410, and 10 on my T431s. But I just got the T431s, so I'm planning on spinning a Linux distribution on to it and check it out.

The T420 technically shouldn't run pretty much any modern OS

back in the day you could get a sweet laptop for 500$. less if you went with a refurb. now places only seem to want to sell you touchpads and they are pricey. if you are buying and thinking about installing a new os watch out for pain in the ass bios that asus has that try to prevent such tinkering

>>

If that triggers you I would advice you to never google "the metric system". You might have a stroke. Not a single thing is measured in horse anuses. It's quite overwhelming.
>>
>>54378452
using commas is stupid. the metric system is fine except that

Been using my T410 for 5 years now, upgraded to SSD and 8GB RAM, now running Windows 10, works perfectly

Well, almost perfectly, I get some display driver issues every now and then, but that's because Intel fucking sucks as supporting old hardware

Intel needs a change of heart like Microsoft

Indeed, how do you think I feel when I read large numbers in US formatting?

Instead of 1 234,56
There's 1,234.56

So the first thought when reading it from left to right is "ok so that's going to be a small number with a long decimal accuracy, no wait there's a period too, it was in US formatting all along". I also think that commas are better for the decimal point since they are bigger and you see them easier.
>>
>>54377498
>14"
Do NOT fall for the WQHD meme
>>
>>54378803
Well with writing a comma is used for a soft pause while a period is used for a hard stop.

Therefore it would be more consistent for numbers to use a comma for thousands separators (more akin to a soft pause, just for the sake of making it easier to read) and a period for decimal since that's more akin to a hard stop that actually matters.
>>
>>54378803
how would you write 1,234.56 in euro style?

1,234,56? isn't that confusing? is it a decimal or written incorrectly?
1,234,567
is it a decimal or is it 1 million?

>>
>>54378932
There is no period, you leave a space for easier human reading. The post you replied on clearly has a space between 1 and 2. The only point where a character is used is when the decimal starts.

1 000 000,00
vs.
1,000,000.00
>>
>>54378932
1234,56 € or
1 234,56 €

No need for another comma or period
>>
>>54378978
Nothing. Just idiots.
>>
>>54378988

>>54379036
I meant easier than leaving them out if it's a human reading it. Otherwise they can all just be together.
Like 123456,78 vs. 123 456,78
>>
>>54379036
>just looks weird to me
If you were used to it, it wouldn't look weird.

The only reason why you're defending periods is because you're used to them, and the only reason why they're defending commas is because they're used to them.

Pointless argument, both ways do their job just fine.

A new thinkpad
>>
>>54377415
These think-pads have i5s and magnesium rollcages, they are both solid and fast. You can pick one up for 200 bux and then buy a nice SSD with the money you saved.
>>
>>54378988
In Germany we have it "simply" the other way around to the Anglo system.

i.e. one thousand two hundred and thirty five dot fifty six

in anglo: 1,234.56
in German: 1.234,56

Although when I read or write ANY kind of scientific literature/papers it's ALWAYS in the anglo format. I don't think metric specifies comma as a decimal point, I rather think it does it the Anglo way.

Also if you're not absolutely brain dead, it's not exactly hard to "switch". Like what is even up with all those stuck up idiots?

It's stupidly easy to convert metric to imperial or to convert celsius to fahrenheit or to see the difference between different decimal points.

Why are you spending so much on a laptop? Do you really need the latest i7, and a shit integrated GPU to shitpost on /g/

I want to know the answer as well.

I'm looking for a new $1k machine but they are all literally either flimsy low quality builds/materials, straight up defective, no battery life, touch screened, slow hard drives, inferior wifi, or some combination of the formers.

This is unbelievable. I might be forced to get a Mac because all the stupid goyim are providing a demand for low quality expensive shit.
>>
>>54377562
>>54377880

Lenovo was the one with the superfish thing. Where their private self signed ssh shit was in the motherboard. You had to wait for some freetard to make a fix and then flag it. Otherwise they had tracking and your computers trust regardless of OS.

Xps 13/15 are pretty good, a few came across my desk recently. They look beautiful and are built solid as fuck. I had a couple issues with the keyboard but that might've been more an artifact of typing at odd angles than an actual hardware thing.

Now people joke about computers being "facebook machines", particularly if someone buys a $2000 Mac and just uses it for Facebook, but a Chromebook is LITERALLY a Facebook machine.
