So the first thought when reading it from left to right is "ok so that's going to be a small number with a long decimal accuracy, no wait there's a period too, it was in US formatting all along". I also think that commas are better for the decimal point since they are bigger and you see them easier.

Well with writing a comma is used for a soft pause while a period is used for a hard stop.
Therefore it would be more consistent for numbers to use a comma for thousands separators (more akin to a soft pause, just for the sake of making it easier to read) and a period for decimal since that's more akin to a hard stop that actually matters.

There is no period, you leave a space for easier human reading. The post you replied on clearly has a space between 1 and 2. The only point where a character is used is when the decimal starts.
