I would never buy a crapple, but Surfaces are hit and miss. We have about 10 at work. 1 never even booted and was complete garbage out the box. Another became fucked up beyond repair within a few months of light usage.

I use my phone mainly to make and receive calls with it, quick email browsing and responding, quick look at office and pdf docs and keeping track of my boarding tickets. I don't want to burn through the phone battery in 2 hours.

I do because I spend around 260 days a year travelling for work and use my phone for mainly talking with people. With a LTE enabled laptop/tablet I can keep being connected to the office network anywhere in world and out in bumfuck nowhere without losing the ability to make phone calls after 2 hours (outside roaming areas with fixed prices I bring SIM cards for that country).
