You probably own a smartphone

and

unless you're a self obsessed prick take a few pictures only once every couple of weeks and probably browse the internet in those rare situations a laptop is not around but that's pretty much it

My question for you is why have people fallen for the smartphone trap when you don't even use half the features it provides or use it so rarely that it's not worth it?

<- Why not go back to these strictly functional devices and reclaim those hours lost staring into social media and do something productive?
>>
>>54355227
Everything is a meme.
I reguarly use smartphone's advanced features.
Even dumbphones today have social media apps.
>>
>>54355227
Yes, everything popular will die
Do you still use the Commodore 64? no
See that super popular computer was just a meme
Just like this website
And you're current computer
>>
Tried doing that, really missed having a QWERTY keyboard and notes with online sync.
>>
>>54355227
I take about 40 pictures a week for work. Otherwise I agree with you.
>>
>everybody uses a phone the same way I do
fuck outta here. You even posted a stock picture. Post a picture of your own phone.
>>
>>54355736
I have a smartphone too if that's what you're trying to say so I'm guilty of it myself
>>
>>54355841
Yes. Why not try a dumbphone yourself before trying to convince other people to do so?
>>
>>54355227
browsing internet on these was a nightmare even back when they were popular
just try to access any website with one of these now and see how that works out

I had one back in the days they were all you could get but then I got caught in the smartphone hype and recently realized I'm throwing away hundreds of moneys every 1-2 year for overkill devices.
Not trying to convince anyone of anything. Just trying to start some debate.

I'm going to stick with my Galaxy S5 for as long as it lasts and then I'll get a 2 digits cheap dumbphone and enjoy the extra money
>>
>>54355972
Start a thread the 4chan equivalent of click bait

>Give me one good reason to get a smartphone instead of a flip phone
>protip: you can't
>>
I'm going the opposite direction, I believed SP were a meme and now I'm trying to get into them
>>
I have a smartphone because when you go to conferences, or are just on travel in general anymore, fucking EVERYTHING assumes you have one. It's stupid as fuck, but nothing I can do.
>>
I use a smartphone because it provides one thing dumbphones can't, a 4G hotspot. This is the one reason I keep coming back to a smartphone. I would love to go full on dumbphone or no phone at all but having the Internet everywhere is just too damned good
>>
Give me a dumb phone that has whatsapp and is under 70€
As of now smartphones are a way better deal
>>
>>54355972
>recently realized I'm throwing away hundreds of moneys every 1-2 year for overkill devices.
It baffles me how people think it's anywhere near worth it to spend like 500 or even 800 euros on a phone.
>>
>>54355227
I prefer it to discreetly shitpost all day at work.
>>
I can get a second hand smartphone for the price of a dumbphone. Once I gut it out with root a bit and grab a custom rom it'll have comparable battery life and an OS that has a hundred times more support and app variety. Is it "just werks"? No. But it's set up just the way I want it.

yes, they are just status symbols now that serve no purpose except being mobile facebook terminals.

Also on screen keyboards are complete shit, Unless you have little girl fingers it's damn near impossible to type without making tons of errors.

Im ready for it to end, I'm looking into pic related, It's 9 bucks at best buy.

Those buttons are smaller than a decent on screen keyboard
>>
>>54358690
They're also easier to press and harder to press the wrong one.
>>
>>54358690
the point of physical keys is that you can touch them and not type, it adds prcesion
not that they are larger or smaller
>>

I need the wifi hotspot of my phone. I would honestly go back to a dumbphone if i could keep that.
>>
>>54355227
Smartphones are very useful and do whatever they are advertised to do (taking phone calls, listening to music, browsing the web, using countless applications, use text messaging etc wherever you go).

Did they bring amazing wealth, comfort and happiness into our lives? Not really. In fact, I feel that they are just yet another burden to carry. Wherever you go, some cunt can call you, text you, e-mail you, it never fucking leaves you alone. Personally, I feel that having a smartphone actually worsens my life. I would throw it away, but unfortunately, society doesn't work that way.

>>

>probably browse the internet in those rare situations a laptop is not around but that's pretty much it

I use the internet on my phone every single day. Multiple times a day. Mostly for streaming music, but also for other things i need to do on the go. I fucking despise touch screens, but having a constant internet access point with GPS features is just too handy to give up on. Or maybe rather, I could live without it but it would be a very serious step backwards.
>>
>>54355227
i use my phone for almost every task. the vast majority of people actually don't appreciate their smartphone. they just like to hold it in their hands and flip through their homescreen pages like retards after they checked their facebook news feed. because they don't know what to do besides that! they can't use a smartphone because they're not smart. but they still want the most recent phones out there. so they're actually providing funds to further push technology, which is good for us.
>>
>>54359120
Beleive it or not alot of dumb phones have gps. My flip phone from 3years ago has it
>>
>>54359018
I am saying that some jobs simply require you to carry one with you. It's expected. If I told them that I don't want to use it any longer because it makes me feel uneasy, they would simply replace me with someone whose ideals are not interfering with work.
>>
>>54359195
Dumbphones from a few years ago have GPS, 3G etc, but the dumbphones you can buy now usually don't, it's weird. I have the feeling that manufacturers have actually dumbed down dumbphones even further to force people to buy smartphones.

Btw, the GPS in dumbphones used to be fucking horrible. Took >five minutes until a signal was picked up.

Best of both worlds: dumbed-down smartphone.

I have owned only ONE(1) smartphone, the Moto G 1st edition.
Then proceeded to flash a FOSS rom, disable bluetooth, disable wifi, disable mobile plans, reduce brightness to a minimum, only use it for calls, messages and the occasional photos.

I get 1 week of battery with light use but can still browse the internet IF I really needed to. I generally don't.
I'm neither a luddite nor a addicted retard. Fight me.

My question is this: Let's assum. I do take a picture once a week, and browse the internet outside only in the doctor's waiting room. What is inherently wrong in taking a better picture once a week, or in having a better internet browsing experience in the waiting room?
I could live with a dumbphone, but I'd just have shittier photos, then.

currently have this for whenever. dont need a cell phone at all, gonna go on a trip so im going to use the daily plan on it, after that it will go back in the drawer.

one of the great advantages of dumb phones over smartphones is battery power, no smartphone can ever compete, while smartphone functions are nice, do you really need to be online 24/7?

>inb4 work requires me to

if your job requires you to not just have a cell phone, it has to be a smartphone because of whatever messaging app or so they can track you, then that is a fucked up job, you shouldn't have to put up with that kind of stress after you clock out.
>>
It's pretty much a pocket tablet you can use everywhere where you have wifi or if you have a data plan. And yeah, since it has so many features you can occasionally listen to some music, shoot some video, take a picture, take or make a phone call, get messages.

It's comfy to have it all in a pocketable device even tho you might not use each feature intensively every day..

So, are they overrated? Yeah. Are they useful? Yup.
>>
I have a smartphone so I can see what you dumbasses are bickering about in my down time at work, such as now.
>>
>>54355227
Stop carrying a multool around. Phone only phone. Internet only tablet. Carry a calculator around incase you need a calculator. Bring a camera that only takes pictures. Bring your credit cards. Bring an mp3 player if you want music. Bring a TomTom if you need gps. Bring a mobile Hotspot if you need mobile internet.
Or I could bring my smartphone.

I think there's a lot of things I'd end up missing if I got rid of my smart phone, despite the fact that I keep saying I don't want one. Auto-photo sync, browsing lewd pictures on the shitter at work, customization, and more than anything, GPS connected via bluetooth to my car stereo.

>recently realized I'm throwing away hundreds of moneys every 1-2 year for overkill devices.
You can get by with budget phones, fucktard. Personally I'm using a HTC 626s that I got for like 100 bucks and it's smooth and does everything I need. There really isn't much reason to buy the newest flagship every year unless you're a hardcore enthusiast or a retard.
>>
>>54359728
That is another of the big reasons why I quit having a phone, my job doesn't require it, I am home when I'm not at work most of the time. Even at $35 a month, that was money being thrown away.

Do you really need to fidget with your phone every spare second you have?

Maybe you don't need it. Cool. keep on not paying for it. Other people have uses for it. I hit up pawn shops and thrift stores often, it's nice to not have to make a trip home to price check shit. Hell in a month's time the money I save in gas practically pays for the mobile data.

I also love skating out to the middle of nowhere with a netbook or UMPC and have a beautiful view and fresh air to do what I'd normally be cooped up inside for.

I don't carry a laptop with me. It stays at home. I use my phone for web browsing on the go.
>>
>>54355227
> few pictures only once every couple of weeks
So? Instead of having a phone I carry around all the time being able to do it, you suggest to buy a $200 camera that can't do anything else and needs to be carrying around for situations where I expect to make pictures?

>browse the internet in those rare situations a laptop is not around
When I want to check IM messages or news after waking up, grabbing the phone is just more comfortable than standing up and getting the laptop. Also the whole "on the run" thing.

Additionally there is simply listening to music, which can be done by another shitty device and actual phone functions. There is also calendar and notes functionality.

Oh and porn.

So why not just getting a smartphone instead of camera, mp3 player, mp4 player, a notebook, pen, calendar and a dumbphone that can't even replace it properly and are barely cheaper?

>reclaim those hours lost staring into social media and do something productive?
If you don't have any self control, giving up functionality won't help you and you'll find other ways to waste time.

Its great for emulators. Have you tried playing DS games on it? Shits comfy and acts like an actual phone game but with a hell of a lot more care put into them.

Also, there's a handful of actually good mobile games. Nothing fantastic, and it gets buried in shit, but they're still good.
>>

Games like Phoenix Wright, any turn-based RPG, etc (practically any non-action game) is perfectly playable with touch controls.

Lots of ds games can be played with nothing but the touch screen of the emulator.

Should also make mention that whipping out a smartphone to play Pokemon is a lot better received in public than whipping out a ds lite or 3ds.

I have an LG G3 with a prepaid no-data $0.10/min call plan, I rarely make cell calls because I live in an area with very poor coverage. Primary use is for health-related apps: AliveCor - to monitor my heart for AFib and MapMyRun to record my workouts including data from a BT-connected HR strap. For privacy reasons I don't backup the phone or sync it and I dont link with or use any identifying social apps on the phone - it is a walled off from my regular email, contacts, etc.. .

I have very real concerns about discrimination at work and I take precautions to avoid any reference to my personal health issues on my work issued iPhone 5s.

So yeah, go ahead and call smart phones a meme. Even though they perform their main purpose better than most tactile phones (making phone calls)

I used to get by without smartphone justfine until february 2016 and i am 26. But i wanted something to take snaps conveniently anywhere so i got Lumia 520 for 30€ and its very convenient.

I have maps in there so i sold my garmin gps for 70, having a camera is very handy, notes are handy and whenever there is wifi i can shitpost or check my bus etc.

Getting a smartphone doesnt mean you have to be on fb 24/7 or pay hundreds of shekels. Dont fall for /g/'s expensive riced phones. Asses your needs rationally and smartphone can end up being a better value than dumbphone.

Dumb phones are hipster memery as well. Protip bunch of faggots: nobody is forcing you to keep your smartphone screen on with all the features including 4g and gps on all day. I have a Nexus 5 which I use as a dumbphone and lasts more than twice in standby (the same use youd give to a dumbphone) than any dumbphone because if fucking has more than twice the battery capacity.

As to why I have a smartphone that I use as a dumbphone, well im not a poorfag neet whose entire savings are gone when I buy a product, I can afford it and the features like gps and pretty much having a computer in your pocket can come really handy at times. Im not dumb enough to get cucked into a monthly plan either.

If you want a dumbphone you can get a Lumia for 30 bucks which is a fully functioning smart phone.

It works perfectly fine as a dumphone.

>I can eat 5 gigs in a day on my PC.

I can use 10GB in a few minutes while downloading my latest waifu show. Pic related.

It's not about the amount of data you transfer, it is about having a constant internet connection everywhere you go. It makes streaming music make sense because you have a PMP that is constantly connected to the internet when you are out and about.

featureless phones are ok but that one sucks big time! the back is so shinny and polished it will slide off any place you put it given the slightest inclination. you would think it locks and unlocks the keyboard like previous nokias, but it doesnt, no typematic speed adjustment, "menu d-pad" thin as a hair very easy to miss and click on the middle button, etc.

I'd like to go back to feature phones if only I can find one with 4g, wifi tethering, decent browser (at least on the level of desktop browsers 10-12 years ago) and GPS. I don't need facebooks, twitters or any apps. Unfortunately, I've never seen anything like that

has anyone abandoned email, in the sense that most of your personal messages are done with facebook?

if not facebook, what other app has replaced email? (linkedin?)
>>
>>54365826
Not sure if you mean personal or business since you mention linkedin. For business, EVERYONE uses email. For personal, most people use facebook but everyone still at least has an email for signing up to services.

>>54355227

Funny enough, the last person I saw using a dumbphone was in 2012.. he was this fat otaku asking his mom to come pick him up from the book store since he had reading manga there for like 3 hours without buying anything. Truly inspirational.

>For business, EVERYONE uses email. For personal, most people use facebook but everyone still at least has an email for signing up to services.

Health Care (business) has to use 'secure' messaging. The solutions usually go beyond the intention of HIPAA rules and make it near impossible to use. HIPAA intent is to limit the way businesses or entities can access a patients PHI (protected health information), but they often mis-apply HIPPA rules and restrict patient and family communication because that is what provider's legal advise.

I get a lot of shit from LinkedIn. All most all of it from strangers, and I suspect bots.

Yeah, email is for signing up for stuff.

When I used a smart phone I used it for shitposting, emulators, email, and other things more specific to my non /g/ related interests that I won't get into. I ditched it due to government spying, vulnerabilities such as Stagefright and patches not getting sent out to fix them, the device being locked down so I couldn't put an alternate OS on it, depending on a touchscreen for everything being a mistake, and Android being a bloated piece of shit that uses more RAM than my Linux install + browser + email client on the netbook that I replaced it with. Now I'm looking at getting something to do some of the things my cell phone did without any of the issues that I had with it as even though the smart phones I've seen are terrible implementations of pocket size computers, I still desire to own what I consider to be a good implementation even if I have to build one my damn self.

>>54366272

>>54355227
Say what you want about "apps," meme startup kiddies trying to make everything an app, and the shitpile that is the IoT but fuck me if while it isn't really secure, having my bank and credit card balances whenever I need them is pretty fucking aces. That and being able to check if the LIRR is fucked again. Oh and my email too.

Plus I got my S4 for $160, pay only an extra $10/month on my phone bill for 1gb of data I have yet to go over, and I have no reason to upgrade. I do like working with and using my smartphone, and it's always there in an emergency.

>Who needs to be online 24/7?
Some jobs require it, honestly, most likely normal people jobs that don't need a whole lot of security. For instance, the different facets of insurance need to be online on-the-go constantly to stay competitive during the day.

>Just get a smartphone and delete the apps...

Cheaper android phones have less than 1G of ram available. I've seen phones run out of memory and become useless in less than one year because when built-in apps get updates, the rom version gets replaced with a ram version. By the time half the apps in your phone get updates your memory is exhausted. BUILT-IN TIME-BOMB OBSOLESCENCE.

in many cases you can't really delete the manufacturer or carrier bloatware without rooting the phone, and if you're going to that, you should get a phone that can run cyanogenmod.

I tried cyanogenmod but my apps that use GPS and bluetooth-LE stopped working.

You probably want a Moto G, a ZTE Warp Elite if on Boost Mobile, or a Xiaomi Redmi 3 or Redmi Note 3
>>
>>54366932
Perhaps you could think a little and disable automatic updates, then outright disable the playstore.

Most apps cant be removed, you're right, but all of them can be disabled.
>>
>>54366960
>I wasn't aware that RAM could wear out like that.

say the factory fresh phone has 1.5Gb rom that is 80% full and 100% of 1Gb ram free

app updates and app data, e.g. updated google and non-google apps are downloaded, and due to some android restrictions, some of them have to go into ram and not the external SDcard

eventually the 1G ram fills up with updated apps, and if you try to delete those apps, android will try to automatically download them again
>>
>>54366960
But he´s right in a way, compare app sizes both of the app itself and of it running and you´ll see how much obcsenely obese they´ve gotten. My dad´s shit galaxy is starting to run out of internal space because apparently you need 50MB to run a picture viewer and 120MB for FB chat. Same with ram, especially the Play Services that is a fucking batter/data/ram/space eater.
>>
>>54355227
A phone without wi-fi, 3g and bluetooth is decent - as long as it's solid and has long battery life.
Then you can buy a cheap portable camera and have everything you need for 1/10 of what a smartphone costs.

>all of the people in this thread who fell for the cell phone meme
Here's your reminder that if you own a cell phone then you might as well let the government install a telescreen in your home.
>the NSA actively collects bulk metadata on cell phone connections to cell towers and stores it for months at a time in their FASCIA database, allowing them to look you up in their database and see a map of your travel habbits, they also now give all other 3 letter agencies access to this data
>in all cell phones with only a couple exceptions (such as the Blackphone and Neo900) the baseband processor, which controls the cell phone's connection to the cell tower, has complete access to the phone's main CPU and RAM, allowing complete backdoor access to your cell phone with simple exploits which are easy for the governemnt to develop because they can request the baseband firmware from companies for a security audit
>police departments regularly deploy stingrays for tracking cell phones and their owners
>>
>>54367238
Not USA citizen.
In my country shops sell sim cards without any form of ID or any link to your real identity - my dumb phone can only be tracked via triangulation since it has no feature - and nothing except antenna, and even then it would not be precise and the phone would have to be ON and they would have to target me... that means I would have to do something illegal and make it obvious that that number is mine.
>>
>>54367145
>A-are you retarded or something?
probably not as retarded as you think

I was trying to make things easy for people who look at specs on phonescoop or gsmarena and see things like

Memory
32 GB internal storage, raw hardware
23 GB internal storage, available to user
3 GB RAM

Here's a pro-tip: instead of just calling the 'retard' card, why don't you go ahead explain memory addressing and allocation for Android for everyone's benefit.
>>
ive been a lifelong dumbphone user until literally today when I bought my first smartphone, so far I really like it. being able to use the internet from anywhere, gps so i can explore and find places to eat when i'm in a new town, taking pictures and sharing them with friends. Such as calling the people you are known to associate with. Look up the NSA's SKYNET program in Pakistan where they used the same metadata to decide targets for drone strikes. They can a lot with just the metadata on cell phone connections to towers.

In most places in the USA you can go into a Kmart, Target, Walmart, or big grocery store and buy a prepaid phone. You can also buy refill cards. If you pay cash the transaction is anonymous.

Such phones are useful for many legal reasons. Shelters give these phones to people fleeing dangerous home situations. They might be reassuring to whistle-blowers who fear retaliation from their employer.

They're also useful to criminals, and when used for this purpose they're called burner phones. The US government wants to make them illegal.

google this:
Pre-Paid Mobile Device Security Gap Act of 2016
>>
>>54368064
>b-but burner phones
Unless you really know what you're doing they won't help and might even attract more attention if you're regularly changing burner phones and don't know what you're doing. Look up the NSA's SKYNET program to see how much they can do.

>if you change phones without overlapping their usage you out yourself
>if you call the same numbers on each burner you own you out yourself
>if you call people who would otherwise be associated with you you out yourself
>if your phone is on at your house you likely outed yourself

Only thing that law would do is make it easier for local police departments who don't have the resources of the NSA to tie burner phones to people, though it would likely have the negative effect of pushing people who use burner phones to alternative forms of communication that are more secure and easier to not screw up than burner phones.
