Someone stole my laptop from my college dorm room and they keep attempting to reset it. They're having a hard time because odds are the scum that took it can't seem to get around Apple's find my Mac feature. I have the MAC address but the police refuse to search my dorm hall because "muh 4th amendment". Meanwhile, he's been searching things like "how to reset Mac" and "how to erase Mac". There are 9 days left and the guy is literally in my building. Help me /g/

The dean is with the police, they refuse to go door to door and ask people or look out for stuff.
>>
>>54353605
Find him yourself, and break his legs.
>>
>>54353632
We know which side of the building he's on, and we already have some suspicion as to who he is. The police are going to attempt to conduct a search with a warrant later today based on some info we got because he tried to sell a soccer jersey he stole from my roommate.
>>
>>54353605
Maybe you should start stealing laptops until it becomes a major problem, forcing them to deal with the issue.
>>
>>54353661
It is a major problem, but the people who can do something don't have any intrinsic value in helping us get our shit back. Frustrating as hell because the person is in the same building as me.

Find my iPhone isn't accurate to an exact place, it gives me the general area in the building that it's in. Even then, it'd inconsistent because sometimes it pings off of routers below if it's close to the window, or a router next door if they were close to the wall.

not saying it does, it just should, so you (or the police) can locate it once you're in close proximity

That's awful, the person who took mine earlier locked themselves out but the computer is still connecting to the dorm network. They even tried to create a fake email address with gmail to try to sign on.
>>
>>54353854
Yeah but that would only be helpful if I had the manpower to listen for it. The computer could be on one of three floors in the dorm on one side of the building. That totals out to 18 dorms to check.

This is definitely why you should always be able to remotely log into your PCs, even while they are locked down or rebooted so they're not logged into your account anymore.

Stop being an autistic overweight faggot, and realize that you don't have to be a fucking cunt to everyone looking for help on a technology board.

>>54353827
Get friends, at least 3. Buy 3 authentic looking police uniforms. Research what search warrants look like. Make a fake search warrant. Be on the lookout for suspicious people, and go to there door with the fake search warrant. The rest is self explanatory.

I would be so bummed too, OP. You should come up with some reason that they have to search for it. Preferably one that doesn't incriminate you though, you probably wouldn't get it back if you said you needed your terrorism plans. Maybe third party confidential information or something.
>>
>>54353776
Also every other room has its own router, but the company is still generating reports of usage to send to the police.
>>
>>54356984
The only third party information we can get are reports from other people, since they don't want to be incriminated either we can't just get a search warrant based on an anonymous tip
>>
>>54357381
I meant more that the HD of the laptop had confidential information on it. In some jurisdictions it would make a difference if the theif had access to, say, a database of your customers.
>>
Set up a trap, leave a backpack and a laptop nearby and wait for him to strike again, pop out, break knees, threaten life for your macbook, profit?
>>
>>54358271
I worked for a top ranking member of congress in national security/foreign affairs but that was over a year ago. I can't confirm whether the information is still confidential.
>>
>>54354799
Why didn't you take this seriously? By far your best bet. Get two laptops, run airodump, narrow it down to your mac station, then both of you start at a separate end of each floor and walk towards each other. You'd figure it out by signal strength in no time. You could seriously get it down to two opposite rooms really quickly. Then obvs break his kneecaps.

Pull the fire alarm, and wait every body left the building for break in, enough time for several search

>>54358652
I'm going to try this. Stay tuned.

For your next laptop, install Prey. You can secretly take pictures of the thief, activate an alarm, and live track the thief's location if they're moving.

Or if you just want to screw the thief over, firmware lock the laptop in advance, ssh in, and shut it off.

>>54356955
That's preferable to a nigger having it.
>>
>>54358722
If there are a shitload of devices, kismet might be more useful. Hell, there are heaps of WiFi monitor programs that could achieve this, provided you can get a wireless card into monitor mode first (to be able to pick up stations). When you get it back, setup SSH on boot or install a RAT or something.

>>
>>54359043
I can't see why not. You will only be able to see it if it is on and broadcasting WiFi. You're just essentially listening to the signal, not messing with the device. If you're having trouble figuring out which device is yours, just narrow it down to the manufacturer section of the MAC address that your model of Mac's WiFi card uses. Look for probes for other WiFi networks you have connected to with it from Mac's that have that similar address which might give it away as yours. If there are no probes, disconnect a couple with aireplay. They'll spit probes when looking to reconnect.

Hell, for all we know it was the roommate himself who helped stealing said laptop.
But honestly, I wouldn't even bother getting my laptop back. Home insurance covers break ins and even if it doesn't, here in the Netherlands everyone is insured in case they damage/lose someone else's belongings, meaning my hypothetical room mate's insurance would cover the loss of my laptop.

Meaning it's a poor black school. Good to hear that you're getting out of there.

Hopefully your parents are helping with that, I knew a guy who was working while studying the same maths degree as me and he didn't last through the first year.

Regardless, good luck with everything

From a legal point of view, it's breaking and entry even if the door is wide open, even here in western Eyropoorland. But as I work for an insurance agency I tend to look at these cases differently, and we would tell OP that he is the one at fault for multiple reasons;
>Left his possessions unattended in a space accessible by others
>No signs of breaking and entry such as tempered locks, broken windows etc
>No other proof of breaking and entry such as camera footage
>Admitted to not having locked his door; failed to follow basic guidelines for keeping his possessions secure.
In other words, to us OP is at fault for neglecting basic guidelines, and combined with the lack of proof that a burglary took place we would not pay him a single dime. Then again our student home insurance only covers the room (with a lock) they rent by themselves as is the norm around here, and does not cover anything left in shared spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens or living rooms.
Funny enough even in this case his room mate would had a mandatory insurance that covers any damage caused (typically up to €1M) to other peoples property, including forgetting to locking or closing a door which resulted in the theft of OP's laptop.
>>
>>54367658
Haven't gotten two computers yet, can you give me a step by step guide as to what to do?
>>
>>54369129
It wasn't me that left the door unlocked. My mom called our insurer and they said they'd process the claim. I was reading that in the US it's still personal property loss and they'd cover it since it happened in a dormitory as oppose to off campus living, in which case it wouldn't be covered because I'd need separate insurance. Worst case scenario where the police doesn't find the computer I'll at least be reimbursed to get one for the upcoming academic year.
>>
>>54353660
If you've got a suspect why aren't you already skulking about waiting to get a glimpse inside.

Hell you said you got a girlfriend have her sweet talk her way inside and see if your laptop is in there. Just make sure she has a panic button on her phone and a few friends waiting nearby in case Jamal tries to culturally enrich her.
>>

We don't have the coalition of giga-niggas to assist me in this venture. Apparently this kid had a shotgun in his dorm last semester and is the biggest drug dealer on campus.

Do a password recovery and use their facebook stuff to answer the security question. If they have facebook set to private have a friend friend them so you can read it.

I'm just going to tell you in advance since you seem very cagey about doing anything this is a crime and you can't go to the cops with that evidence. This is just to confirm if you have the right guy so you can either steal your shit back or redouble your efforts of finding a legal way to nail him instead of faffing about trying to figure out who done it.

if he's hardwired in thru an ethernet port you can try talking to the IT admin and see what port he's on. the admin can shut/no shut ports based on mac addresses and if he knows the vlan he should know the physical location. i'm an se at cisco. you could also do a mac scan thru cain and abel but im not sure if that would give you any useful information. depending on how it's setup you could find what devices are on the network by matching the mac address or trying to do an oui lookup (but everyone has a mac). MAYBE you could do an mitm on the right ip

>>
>>54353605
> Visit the local network admin, they are usually just college kids helping out
> Tell him your story, show proof

Scout the room, wait until guy leaves, break into room, steal laptop back, call it a day.
And next time install some anti theft shit on it.
Insurance is not a bad idea either.

THinking how I'd avoid this
>OSX auto-logs in to a dummy account
>Call it "Admin"
>not actually an admin
>Meanwhile, on boot, run autossh as a daemon, use it to set up a reverse proxy to your home machine
>ssh in, get rough location
>get connected AP's, zero in on location
>blank the screen, lock the keyboard and trackpad, set the volume to full, and play an audio file that just screams "I AM A FILTHY THEAVING NIGGER" on loop
>Break down door with the sound coming from it
>Retrieve laptop
>>
>>54372832
>reverse proxy

>>
>>54372832
ESET Smart Security does this fake profile thing though.
>>
>>54372847
OSX has a built in dummy profile, but it's almost a bit obvious.
Who'd suspect a profile that auto logged in?
>>
>>54372914
Well you set this one up, give it some proper name, and why would it be suspicious?

I mean what if your kid can access your laptop or sister or mom or whatever?
>>
>>54372924
On boot, once it auto logs in, you log out and go into your real account.
Set it so if it's been logged in on your account but in sleep, if someone opens the screen it stays black unless you type the correct key, someone will go to hit the power button, have the power button cause an instant reset in this context, so they think it was just off. Boots into the dummy account.

It only takes a few seconds for something unpleasant to happen. You're dancing one second, and out of the blue, a fat girl grabs your crotch and then fucks off. Shit of nightmares.

You & friends go to missing link's cave. Beat the shit out of it while searching for stolen goods. Collect anything thing of worth jewelry, computers, phones.etc even if its not your's. Its in the posession of a nigger and is likely stolen.. even if you dont find your laptop. You got payback for him stealing your roomates jersey. And the ape learned a valuable lesson not to put his "gibbsmedat" jiggaboo hands on things that "aint his"
>>
>>54372635
I'll just go see the network admin, ironic because their office is in the building closest to my dorm. They even have students working on the online page, lets see how this pans out.
>>
Why do niggers even go to college? Any skills they could make use of are aquired in jail.
>>
>>54373092
> Even if it's not yours

Well even if it is mine, and I try to take it back, even if I put just one finger on him it goes from burglary to felony robbery. UPD warned me against it, the law is fucking stupid. I'm only charging into someone's room if I can guarantee that it's mine. I can't run the risk of just beating the shit out of people that I only suspect took my stuff.
>>
>>54373124
Funny story. Since I'm computer-less I had to go to my computer lab in my dorm hall and when I went inside there was this nigger head banging and rapping along to a morning radio show freestyle. The room reeked of blunt wrap. He then started reading the criteria for an assignment out loud and screamed "FUCK THIS SCHOOL SHIT NIGGA" and turned off the monitor and walked out.
>>
Its funny. Im canadian. I wasnt born a racist. Nor was i taught from peers/family... i learned from watching niggnogs in action. Theres a reason there are no monuments in africa. Is your life a sitcom?
>>
>>54369422
You can do it with one.

Boot Kali or something like that

Use airmon-ng to put the WiFi card into monitor mode

Run airodump-ng and slowly add filters like fixing the channel

Find out which mac addresses have one where the manufacturer parts of the mac address match the WiFi card manufacture that your iMac uses.

Walk around to suss out the signal

Only flaw is other iMacs might be around. Just be thorough when you look up the WiFi card manufacturer of your exact model.

Anything you don't know how to do, just google. It's easy.

You have the MAC, right?
Or the IP.

They have the fucking routers, switches.

There must be some service, program, whatever running on your laptop.

>Guy gets mugged, macbook is stolen.
>Guy gets home reports loss, insurance etc.
>Starts getting pictures emaild to him by his Macs security software.
>Guy build a dossier of everything the thief is looking at on the screen, and from the webcam.
>Guy posts thiefs O face and what porn was being masturbated to.
>Guy pinpoints location of theifs flat using combination of location tracking, and the view through the grubby windows in the background.
>Police do nothing until guy passes the whole thing to a Channel 4 TV crew and the thief is caught in a TV sting trying to sell the stolen laptop.
>>
>>54377601
Ok look nigga, simple.
Does your laptop know your home wifi password?

Set up a rogue wifi network.
Wait until someone connects to it, and then you have your machine.

How about that?
By rogue wifi network I mean you can set up a fake facebook, that takes a picture.
Make them download some client application, like a keylogger.
...

So?
>>
>>54377601
The RPI2 got a wifi, so you could use it as a drop wifi network.
The power adapter is also small, uses microusb.
So you basically just have to find an outlet, OR have some power bank to power it.

Make sure the power bank output can power it though.
Then place it wherever you think your laptop is.
If they use a lan cable, then it will connect up anyway.
