4k-to-after-effects[1].jpg
17 KB, 550x247
Hi ya'll. I'm wondering what the best minimal specs are for a computer build that is optimized for heavy use of After Effects, Premiere Pro and more Adobe software for 4K.

I've had used Mac's in the past during my previous internship and they ran pretty well. I was one of the lucky interns who had the 5K iMac. I'd rather use Windows, so I gotta stay away from that.

I just want a build that is ready for content creation and ready for 5-10 years in the future. Gaming is cool, but not mandatory.

GeForce 980 Ti

Any half decent gpu will do. Even higher end Intel integrated gpus are enough.
>>
>>54340033
Is that gonna be enough or is it temporary and I need to upgrade to the 1000 series?

>>54340049
How come AMD isn't recommended? Just wondering, Also, CPU? Definitily i7, but there are too many to choose. 4 Ghz?
>>
>>54340049
>Any half decent gpu

OP said 4K shit in After Effects.
>>
You'll want it as beastly as you can afford.
>>
>>54340166
Price is irrelivent. I want a beast.
>>
>>54340191
Then buy a $2,000,000 supercomputer
>>
i7-5820k, 6 cores(12 threads), 15MB L3 cache, 3.3Ghz stock clock, OCs on air to 4Ghz+, I'd recommend 4x8GB DDR4. GTX 980Ti for now, Upgrade GPU when they release something better.

500GB Samsung 950 Pro m.2 SSD for OS and programs.
700w Modular gold or platinum PSU

whatever case you want

>How come AMD isn't recommended?

A lot of content creation software has better GPU acceleration support on Nvidia because Nvidia put out a proper SDK for taking advantage of the GPU for general computing tasks before AMD did.

Adobe resisted even supporting GPU-accelerated tasks on AMD cards until Apple went all AMD, and Adobe pretty much had to support AMD Radeons.

oh boy..
>>
>>54340005
5820K with as much DDR4 as you can afford.
Graphics card isn't all that important, nvidia if you want to use CUDA otherwise stay with AMD for superior OpenGL.

The big thing is fast enough storage. I/O is going to be what holds you back, these days i'd get one of those 512gb samsung M.2s to run the OS, programs and your active project on, then 4x4tb in RAID10/1+0 to dump shit on.

Golden advice. Thanks!

>>54340005
gtx 970
i5 6500

You said minimal and would still be decent, go with this because you're going to upgrade in 3 years to stay relevant.
>>
If you want an actual list of parts i'd use if i were you:
Fractal Design R5 non-window
Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 850w or Seasonic XP-760
Asus Sabertooth X99 (looks rice, has native USB 3.1)
Intel 5820K + Cryorig H5 or similar, overclock to 4ghz
HyperX Fury 4x8gb 2133mhz DDR4 kit
EVGA GTX 970 or Sapphire R9 390, upgrade this with pascal/polaris
Samsung 950 Pro 512gb M.2 (potentially 2x in RAID1)
4x Toshiba 4tb HDDs, windows RAID 1+0

Then i'd just keep an external 4tb and periodically back my shit up onto it.
>>
>>54340325
No problem, i basically have what you'd be looking for (besides GPU)
>>
>>54340005
>heavy use of After Effects
As long as it's not AE2015, where distributed compute is currently broken, there is no such thing as too few cores/CPUs. However many cores you throw at it is the speed-up you'll get.
Other programs, even Premiere, drop sharply after 6 cores, so if you want the best bang for the buck, get some manner of 6-core CPU like the 5820K.
A fast GPU might speed up some effects and things, but not all of them, most of the program still runs on the CPU.
>>
>>54340373
Nivida usually makes the '70s in series the relevant ones for gpu computing and much more features, I can't imagine what made you take 960.

Gonna save this thread. Good stuff!

RAM and CPU are going to be the bottleneck.

AE 1080p 30 FPS = 8 Gigs RAM

AE 4k 30 FPS = 32 Gigs RAM

AE 4k 60 FPS = 64 Gigs RAM
>>
>>54340414
Because it's literally only being used as a holdover card until the 1xxx series or whatever AMD puts out releases.

I do very little gaming, and almost everything I do is CPU bound.

I got the 960 because of the price and the ability to drive 2x2560x1440 comfortably.
>>
>>54340449
These are minimums honestly.

You can do 720p 30 FPS quite comfortably in 8 gigs, but you wouldn't want to go any less.
>>
>>54340415
Also remember that i said i'd personally go 32gb of RAM, if i had money to burn like you appear to i would actually get 2x of those kits and run 64gb, going into the future it wouldn't be a bad thing to have.

If you really don't give a shit about money, you could get 4x 2tb samsung SSDs and do RAID1+0 with those and do all your projects on the storage drives rather than being limited to 150gb or so like you would with the M.2s
>>
>>54340502
Note'd!
>>
>>54340365
X99 can't RAID m.2 drives only Z170 can, otherwise your build seems solid enough. I'd probably get a beefier heatsink like the R1 Ultimate for stabile 4.3~4.4Ghz all day long.

>>54340449
>>54340467
The bare minimum of memory you NEED is 2GB times the number of cores your system has. No reason not to max out on RAM, but realistically after about 22GB any extra RAM you throw at AE is mostly going to go into being able to scrub through more of the footage at once.
At the very least, get a 4x8 kit and if you feel the RAM hitting its limit, you can always add more.
>>
>>54340516
If what this guy
>>54340402
Says is true, it might even actually be worthwhile to get the 5960X or an 8/10 core xeon if you're going to mainly be using aftereffects
>>
just leave adobe products
