What's the best book to learn Perl? I'm not really fond of things that are online and the age of the book doesn't matter, just quality.
Thanks!
Oh, just to add. I know a few languages already, but I'd really like to learn Perl for *nix administration stuff that I'm doing.
just learn python you dumb ass

I can't say I didn't expect this.

hey man woah im sorry for jumping down your throat, but hey, perl is a dead language.
>>54331026
No, I know. The more I think about it you're probably right. I already know some python so I suppose I would be better served focusing on getting better at it.
Thanks for making me think twice.

Learn them both dude.

This. Perl is still pretty good at what it was originally designed for: text manipulation. In python there's usually only one way of doing something while in perl there are infinite ways to achieve the same thing so it gives you pretty good flexability but it can also give you a painful headache if you're not careful. Perl is kind of dated but it's still a very usefull utility for processing lots of text, parsing html/xml, tying different programs together etc etc. It's totally worth learning and can come in handy when you least expect it, I wouldn't suggest writing everything in perl though or you'll turn into a heroin addict.

Lol I remember this! Both python and perl have some pretty stupid vulns, although it doesn't really matter if you only use them for quick and dirty scripts. Python 3 fixed a lot of vulns found in python 2, I wonder if perl 6 will do the same.

>flexability
There is no a in 'flexibility'.
You better be not the same guy that wrote 'dependance' multiple times on this board.

>>54334973
Don't forget chromatic's Modern Perl

Python is dead too. They can even decide which version of the language to use
The best reason to learn perl is to see if you prefer it to python. I learned python first, but I enjoy perl so much more and I'm glad I learned it.
