Xfce panel has always been my favorite part of Xfce. All the other shit that is basically the same as any other DE/non-tiling wm, including Windows, but the panel has all the customization options that I actually want. The alternatives are all either shit rip offs of OS X or shit rip offs of Windows Vista and earlier

Definitely same for me. It's what sets xfce apart from other DEs more than anything else. I was going to make the switch to vanilla openbox, because I'm on a shitty old laptop, but I just couldn't leave the panel behind.

What motivates you to use xfce panel/openbox instead of full xfce? Is it worth my time to try it out?

It's a performance thing. I'm not even convinced it makes a difference, but I'm sort of obsessed with getting as much performance out of my computer as possible. If you have even a slightly new computer/laptop, It's probably not worth it for you to try it. I have a 6-year old compaq laptop, and I'm doing everything in my power to keep it functional

Honestly it's mostly identical. Xfwm nowadays has mostly the same features as Openbox, except being able to undecorate windows separately (you can make it undecorate maximized windows in the configs however)
