What's your uptime?
Do you frequently reboot your machine? Do you turn it off when you're not using it?
>>54313574
shut down whenever I am away for more than a day
reboot when new kernel
2 days 18hrs 26min on win10
use sleep at night to silence it but only shut down/reboot if i have to for updates or if i won't be around for a while
last shutdown was an all-day power outage, far longer than the 20 mins or so my ups buys me
>>54313574
Turn it off every night. The sound and light bothers me.
>>54315952
why not put to sleep?
or hybrid sleep - hibernation
>>54315838
>>54313574
>>54315898
get on my level
>57 days on Winshit box
>42 days on Solaris box
Only really reboot when there's a power outage or something's fucked up otherwise.
>>54316066
29days 19hrs 47mins on my macbook
but it has the battery to last through a 9hr power outage
>>54316458
noice
>>54313574
I shut down my desktop whenever I won't be using it for an extended period of time, so this means at the very least it won't be running while I sleep. (15h 12m up)
I don't shut down my server ever, I restart it when it needs a kernel update basically. (5d 16h up)
I don't restart my router at all unless I'm doing a FW update. (62d 13h)
>>54317634
problem is, i set this thing up with full disk encryption, and i haven't rebooted it once, so i'm not sure i remember the passphrase
>>54315838
wait a second. I just came back and noticed it said 0 users.... What?
I'm on it though...
Does it count from 0 or something?
It says 2 users but I'm the only one that's ever used this computer??? Is satan in there?
>>54317811
1 for X session
1 for your terminal session
both you
>>54315952
this
>>54317683
How do you encrypt ur disk?
>>54317692
>>54317863
wait. fuck. then why do I have 0 users?
>>54317901
you ain't using it the way it was meant to be used
6½ days.
>>54317897
LVM inside LUKS container
the standard debian way, the installer even suggests it as an option
was a bit of a hassle to set up on the raspberry (it's a raspberry) though
>>54317914
I am the ghost poster I guess
>>54317955
Every time you boot, you need to enter the password?
>>54318112
yes
i have that on my laptop too
but i only reboot when there's a kernel update, otherwise i'll just use suspend, like everyone else
>>54317897
ext4 + LUKS
I shut down my personal pc when i am not using it
My work pc stays on 24/7 except when it needs to restart for an update
>>54313574
I used to always shutdown my Win10 whenever I wasn't using it, because it booted back up pretty quickly.
Until I found out 'Shut down' was just slang for 'Sleep' by default settings. Actual boot time takes way too long, so I usually just Hibernate.
>>54315952
Same.
Save some electricity while not using it.
>>54313574
I used to strive for higher uptime, but I don't do that anymore.
I always reboot when I have updated my kernel.
This is even more important on my home server as new kernels means bugfix.
Is there any reason not to shutdown unless it is a server beside being to lazy to start it up and login?
>>54321807
>Is there any reason not to shutdown
is there any reason *to* shutdown?
assuming the device supports standby of course
>>54321940
>longer life
>saving energy
>always up to date
>>54322257
>longer life
no. rebooting puts more of a strain on the hardware than going to standby
>saving energy
yes. but standby mode shouldn't consume much
>always up to date
i do reboot for kernel updates
>>54322291
It's not about rebooting, but giving the machine a break. Won't the hardware last longer if it's not used excessivly?
