It came too late. If they had made a hybrid kernel instead of insisting on doing a microkernel all the way, then maybe they could have implemented it fast enough.
Although microkernels are small they are still too hard to implement if you want some decent performance.

Google has an engine with JIT compiles regexes into ASM. It's far more efficient than grep.
