It's not about ddos, captcha won't stop that. It's against spam. Because you can be sure the site would otherwise be flooded with advertising spambots. Along with 4chan spammers. (Imagine "I'd like to interject you for a moment" whenever someone writes Linux instead of GNU/Linux).

It is mainly for spam, if you were here before the captchas you'd see why this is necessary.
Spam comes from bots as well, generating a ridiculous traffic on the servers causing problems to the whole website.
And lastly it's a way for extra money on the gold pass.
