Is perl worth learning, /g/?
no, just learn awk

HAHAHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA...
Wait, you're serious? Let me laugh even harder!

Yes, any dotcom that survived the bust is going to have perl code.
Fuck no.
Ruby is better
Perl is good but good fucking luck reading it
>>54301059
don't laugh on the internet you filthy animal
>>54300974
Yes.
First there was bash built-ins, but they weren't adequate, so sed was created.
Sed wasn't adequate though, so awk was created to supersede sed.
Awk wasn't good for a general purpose programming language, so perl was created.
I use Perl whenever I need to process text files. Perl is the king of regular expressions and managing text. If you use 'nix a lot, learn some perl.

I've been learning ruby for a day now. I have a few years of perl experience. This guy might be right, I'm really liking ruby.
When I interviewed at Intel they told me if I got hired I'd need to learn Perl.
>>54300974
Always
>>54301640
Ruby is great man.
The syntax is so fucking nice
>>54301640
>Perl is the king of regular expressions and managing text.
but most languages shamelessly copied Perl's regular expressions verbatim anyway
>>54301674
most languages don't let you do shit likeprint $_ if (/regex/);
Perl makes the things that it's good at super quick n easy. I mean, chances are in any *nix environment you'll have Perl, *sh, python, etc installed. I usually use bash to wrap the processes of setting my shit up, obtaining data from like SQL db or something. Toss that to Perl to make it nice n clean n mungy. Then toss that shit to python, import numpy , pandas, matplotlib, you got matlab + oo for free to do all your stupid abstract modeling n analysis
For my systems programing class next year ill need to use c, awk and pearl.
Is my schools cs department retarted?
>>54300974
Perl is like PHP except even worse. A language everyone hates that by the time you get good enough at the better languages will have replaced everything you know
>>54302017
That's kind of what systems programming is about you tit.
Watch this, then decide

>>54300974
I learned Perl 5 back in 1998, and I still have a soft spot in my heart for it.
I still use it when I need to duct tape some shell scripts together and I need something a little more powerful than /bin/sh to structure things.
It's very good in that role, and it will be part of my toolset for as long as I'm programming.
For fucks sake no. Are you retarded?
