Why do people hate chromebooks so much? They're arguably the best laptop on the market.

ChromeOS is shit garbage, Crouton is a kludge, dealing with Google's BIOS sucks dick, flashing a custom BIOS is a huge risk, Chromebooks are useless ugly trash. If you own one, kill yourself.

>flashing a custom BIOS is a huge risk
As is with any computer. Even updating your BIOS is risky. But with Google, literally only a write protection screw needs to be removed after putting it in developer mode, and then you just run a couple commands in shell and you're done. Shit b8 tho m8
>>
>>54293111
Battery life is a perk for most of the chromebooks, I don't think any screens are IPS, but I got an 11" sceeen with 1080 resolution and it looks great
>>
>>54293626
The point is to get rid of the OS that a 3 year old can use, and replace it with one that isn't complete trash.
>>54293720
With a non-Chromebook you don't have to do any of that shit, and they're just as cheap. You're wasting your time and putting yourself at extra risk for literally no reason.
>>

>the point is to get rid of the OS that a 3 year old can use and replace it with one that isn't complete trash
This can be easily done.

>With a non-Chromebook you don't have to do any of that shit, and they're just as cheap
Please direct me to machines that have similar price ranges with equal/better specs than a $300 Chromebook.
But don't even think of mentioning old thinkpads, because you'll most likely have to update the BIOS which = high risk; hence wasting your time. Why waste your precious time, senpai?

chromebook is fine if you can find a decent one. To be quite honest it seems they are making huge margins on them because of the shitty screens, cheap ass cpu's and ordinary batteries.

The new pixel C replacement shown off by HP looks promising and will probably be my next laptop.

Fine for essays, streaming, a little programming and theres always the linux option if things go south with google.

What's not to like?

It's dogshit. 16GB models start at $200. You can get an atom/APU laptop with windows with 1TB of local storage for around $200. Storage and windows OS come first.

It's a butchered and botnet infused version of linux. Worse than ubuntu and that says a lot.

A brand new CB3-111-C8UB with a dual core celeron is $152 on Amazon m8
And a C720 with the same processor and RAM is $169. Both are 16GB models.

As for all the other shit you said, nobody cares about a TB of storage on a machine used simply for web browsing. But they do have SD card slots, so why not just buy one of those? And you can buy higher capacity SSDs for them as well. So what's the problem again?
>>
>>54296377
The Samsung Series 3 and a few other models are ARM. But yeah, the celerons are great little chips for the price.
>>
>>54296346

Yeah, mechanical storage tho

Because for the same price, you can get a beefy C2D thinkpad that runs real linux and doesn't wipe your "developer mode" settings by pressing the spacebar on bootup.

Pentium M doesn't have PAE or SSE2, so no modern distros or OSes will run on it.
It's also anemic as fuck and freezes up on the modern web if you have more than 4 tabs open, it's literally obsolete.
You can get a C2D thinkpad for only $10-20 more than a pentium m era thinkpad, don't be retarded.
>>
>>54292909
>ANSI layout
Yeah I know, it's fucking awful.
>>
>>54296521
You never said anything about resolution, tard. 1366x768 is perfectly fine for watching videos/streams, shitposting, etc. But if you just REALLY need a higher res, then pay more you fuckhead.
>>
>>54296521

just know it'll weigh more as well. I like those models because you can literally hold it in one hand, zero effort, zero strain, so it's great to carry around.

The issue with chromebooks is that they are way overpriced. You may think it sounds ridiculous given that they're some of the cheapest laptops you can buy, but when considering what you actually get you'll realize they're a complete ripoff.

Chromebooks generally have old and/or shitty hardware. The average chromebook can hardly be compared to a regular laptop. Their performance is like that of a 5 year old laptop. And they have no local storage and often limited ports. There's nothing wrong with not having local storage and shitty hardware. I mean I get it, your shit is "in the cloud", but this isn't something new. You can keep your files in the cloud on your regular laptop as well. But really, what are the benefits of not having internal storage? That it reduces cost. Same with the shitty hardware (other than arguably energy savings), and if these savings aren't passed on to you, the customer, then it's a shitty deal for you, because you're getting less for the same price.

So you're paying like 75% of the price of a regular laptop for a chromebook intended for the same target audience. Now, the chromebook is going to have slightly better battery life and (arguably) a nice OS. The laptop on the other hand, will have a faster CPU/GPU, more RAM, more local storage, more connectivity, and much more user control in that you can install whatever you want on it more easily, and you can store your files on the interwebs if you want to just as easily on this device. If you don't like Chrome OS on top of this, it's simply a shitty deal.
>>
>>54296547
>>54296592
I'm not the original guy, I just want a resolution that isn't a meme. It can be lower.
>>
>>54296740
buttblasted chromebook owner here

>considering what you actually get you'll realize they're a complete ripoff.
Not all chromebooks. For any class of products, you can probably find a "complete ripoff" (or maybe even many), but that doesn't mean they all are.

Still, I agree that there are a lot of shitty chromebooks out there. I'm pulling this out of my ass, but I'd guess only 25% are a good deal provided you understand the limitations.

>Their performance is like that of a 5 year old laptop
I don't understand how you can think this is true. Maybe you're thinking of the super-duper cheap models, because I have a C720-3404 (4gig ram, i3, SSD), and the performance is way better than a 5-year-old laptop purchased at the same price -- especially because of the SSD and actually-not-horrible integrated graphics.

>And they have no local storage
This is definitely a limitation, but it hasn't really affected me. I just use my chromebook as a thin client for my desktop, where I download all of my torrents etc.

>If you don't like Chrome OS on top of this, it's simply a shitty deal.
I agree. I don't think I could stand using Chrome OS on a daily basis.

But popular GNU/Linux distros run perfectly on plenty of Chromebooks and, in my case, without any non-free firmware/drivers (aside from the microcode, I guess).
>>
>>54297128
I guess I'm just saying that you have to weigh the costs and benefits of a chromebook.

They're not ripoffs, but they're also not "the best laptop on the market" as OP claims.

I didn't pick that card at random, I actually bought a laptop in 2008 which had that card in it, and your card that is still being sold barely scores higher than that. 2008 was 8 years ago.

So what's wrong here? Do you not recognize benchmarks as an accurate metric for testing computer performance? Because if you do you're obviously wrong. The chromebooks have such subpar hardware that it's a complete joke. If you think I'm being unfair please explain, I'll eagerly listen. To me it just seems like you're trying to justify your poor purchase.
