I found the concept of looking at my leftover weeks very interesting.
Some people are selling this in a poster, but I made my own.

Really helping with motivation to do useful things. The problem is you think you have enough time left

Firefox is an additional package which comes with the distribution. It's not part of the core OS, which is GNU mostly used Linux as kernel, but not always.

I'm confused so is Ubuntu: Linux or GNU?

It's Hurd

>GNU
>Core OS

Most important: Linux (can act as an OS on its own)
Second most important: Systemd (if used as init, allows the user to easily make use of linux's multitasking feature)
Third most important: GNU compiler, libraries (build dependency)
Least important: GNU userland programs (fluff), wayland/X (there's a framebuffer)
>>
>>54251302
Since it's a GNU variant with Linux as kernel, it's called GNU/Linux. If unsure, you can also use the command
uname -o
to check for the OS's name on your current distribution.
>>
>>54251333

I am confused
>>
>>54251333
no, it's a freedesktop OS variant, which is necessarily a linux system. freedesktop has one kernel, and it is linux. linux has one core userland, and it is freedesktop. everything else is interchangable.

most of GNU is just the UNIX compatiblity layer ala bash on windows once you get past a few of their libraries (which are also used on OS X...GNU/OS X!)

stallman only wants you to call it GNU to emphasize his commie software philosophy. that's literally it. "linux" is too associated with sane non-communist open source people.

And then have the rest of the OS not fucking work

Its stopped being GNU/Linux when you stopped using hotplug scripts, acpi scripts, devfs, and bash-based service management. The core OS is only partly GNU, so GNU deserves as much of a place in the name as freedesktop, which has done much more than just clone UNIX poorly.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bait to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture
