Wait Winblows can't use characters in file names? I've been using Linux for so long now I didn't even realize. Like half of the images in my pictures folder end in a question mark

It's normally a FS thing, NTFS doesn't allow much. If NTFS is still what W uses.

How is this handled in linux? There are calls that would delete the file on boot. Not quite the same but eh. The kernel can handle invalid handles just fine. Some programs won't but they're fucking things up anyway by not responding/keeping the file in-use when they shouldn't.

Fun fact: You can indeed write such a filename to an NTFS filesystem using ntfs3g on a *nix system, but upon returning to a Windows system, the shell will shit itself whenever trying to access the file, and chkdsk will promptly delete the file and throw a file000*.chk in C:\found.000 with no way to tell the files apart.

Interesting. Must be a new feature of Windows 8+ or something.

A while back, I created a bunch of files with colons in the name that needed to be organized in a particular way and didn't really pay any attention to the filenames, then upon putting the drive back in a Windows machine, chkdsk wiped out all the filenames, but left the contents intact in found.000... which was completely useless because the locations were important, and I had to spend hours redoing it.
It also didn't bother keeping the filenames in the log so I couldn't even manually rename them.

Most sites let you drag and drop images to upload them and if the don't you can always just drag it on the "Choose file" button

I use this as an interview question.

Actual correct answer is to use a null character, guys, because it's the only character explicitly not allowed in a file name. Most common example is something like:

$ find . -print0 | xargs -0
>>
>>54251306
Actually, sorry, I'm drunk. Me again.

The *actual* actual answer is that you should never be parsing untrusted input in a shell script. Ever. Duh.

Fucking *anything* but a shell script. Please.
>>
>>54244321
You have no fucking clue how hard it can be to get a repository working if any one file has one of those invalid characters - Git just breaks and falls apart onto itself.

And then there's the whole case insensitive (but not really) bullshit, which is even worse.

Apple, your hardware is pretty okay for what it is, but I will never not hate you to the core for this. Also, Finder in general.
