The left side IS better. Why? Because you have more vertical space when browsing the web. Autohide is for faggots

How difficult is the transition from windows to ubuntu? I have a thinkpad which I use for school, and im thinking about experimenting with it once the semester is over. The main programs I use are libre office, anki and firefox so as long as those programs are compatible (im sure they are) then I wont miss out on anything.

Also, do parts designed for windows like mice and numberpads work with linux?

I really like unity somehow. Thought about switching on my x220 to xubuntu or ubuntu mate anyways to make it less resource hungry, but it is fast enough for my needs I guess.
Battery life would be a reason though

If you've never used a command line and are afraid of them, it's possible to use Ubuntu without ever having to see it (like with Windows' for most people.)

arch is objectively superior except, and this is my scenario, when you have a laptop with optimus/switchable graphics. for the last couple months it's entirely broken on arch. this wouldn't bother me except for the fact that it also fucks up power management

Ubuntu on my current thinkpad laptop. When I get a new laptop sometime next year with intel graphics and a HiDpi display I'll go full arch once again

im going to save up for a chromebook pixel 2. depending on how autistic I feel I might wipe it for a full linux installation
>>
>>54266032

I don't think you have to feel particularly autistic to do that, anon. Just as a practical matter, any full linux distro is going to be worlds more useful than BotnetOS. Honestly, the hardware is wasted on the software if you *don't* wipe it and put a full distro on it.
>>
>>54266083
well crouton works well in pretty much every scenario, especially with full hardware compatibility and such

i'd only wanna do it if I wanted it for security
>>
>>54266032
>>54266083
You say that, but the only thing standing between me and a ChromiumOS partition to waste this hardware on is the lack of a robust installation workflow.
>>
>>54266139

I would recommend ChromeOS for my mother-in-law, who will otherwise find horribly inventive ways to break any other OS (Windows, Mac, etc). But past that.... nope.
>>
>>54266195
why not? for internet browsing, office work, and basic media consumption it's pretty great as a secondary OS
>>
The fuck I just installed Unity Tweak Tool and before I even had a chance to fuck around and break shit all of my fonts fucked themselves up. Now I need a microscope to read my title bar, and feel like a senior citizen in the rest of the system because the rest of the fonts are fucking 16pt
>>
>>54266214

Because, as you say, it's a secondary OS in that case. If you do any more than those things, there are other OS's/distros that are more capable, while also providing for those same uses.

Why would I waste disk space installing a secondary distro when my primary distro can do all those things already?
>>
>>54266266
>Why would I waste disk space installing a secondary distro when my primary distro can do all those things already?
well I wouldn't. but chromebooks are very optimized for it. the OS is lightweight and fast at doing what it does. no OS can run chrome as fast as ChromeOS can on any given hardware. it's also light on resources and most devices last very long; chromebook pixel 2 even benchmarking at 14 hours after being advertised at 12 (see: the verge review).

if I had a chromebook pixel 2 as my laptop and still had my desktop I probably wouldn't even install crouton until I felt I needed it
>>
This is easily the buggiest LTS released. I've never seen so many things broken out of the box. The global menu has been broken since January and they still haven't managed to figure out how to fix it, and the dash doesn't recognize newly installed applications without logging out and logging back in half the time. I couldn't even get Chrome to install because one of the scripts it runs after install had depended on an application that was removed at some point between 14.04 and 16.04.

How did any of these make it to the stable release? Its not like I'm doing anything obscure. 2/3 of the issues have to do with stuff installed by default
>>
>>54266300

Well, sure, OK, but if you still had your desktop for doing your ordinary work, you probably wouldn't get a Pixel 2 as your desktop, you'd instead probably just get, say, a Toshiba Chromebook 2, which is a fraction of the price and equally capable of running ChromeOS.

That is, I'm assuming you would, because that's what I would do given your perspective.
>>
>>54243814
"please don't"
>>
Who looked at this and decided it was okay?
>>
>>54266336
I had a toshiba chromebook 2 that I gave to my mom. it was good but it was still a budget machine

I want a chromebook pixel for the hardware, screen (quality, resolution, and ratio), speed, and longevity (both battery and years it will be useful).

its one of the best laptops ever made and since im not retarded and know how to use linux I have no software limitations with it.

I use laptops mostly for what chromeos allows; web browsing, office work, and media consumption. getting a premium device for that is worth it IMO

>>
>>54266822
I'd just switch to Fedora or Arch. Stability is a meme at this point. Apparently not patching bugs is equivalent to stability in both Debian and Ubuntu's eyes.

That said I like Unity so I'm stuck with Ubuntu until one of the other DEs decides to copy modern OS X or WIndows 7

Arc Darker Ubuntu

Not really a coder, but this is my attempt at making the arc-theme at bit more unity-friendly.

This theme is build with GTK3.18 in mind, so it's for Ubuntu unity 16.04 ONLY. - If you dont like OSX icons, you can use the orignals with theme noOSX.

Theme is a fork of https://github.com/horst3180/arc-theme/ - Thanks to horst3180 for his wonderful theme.

If you have more suggestions feel free to ask or make pull-requests.

You will need to install gnome-themes-standard & gtk2-engines-murrine to make sure everything works.

just search it on gnome-look, there's a couple old GTK2 themes based around the old Mac OS platinum

the MATE icon is custom made though, i just used the square tool in PINTA and some transparencies
