>What's the general consensus on detachable switches?

Would be nice for future maintenance or modification. Particularly considering plate-mounted Cherry switches require you to desolder the entire goddamn PCB to swap out one switch.
>>
>>54231553

The board itself is great for the money, but make sure you get the non-backlit version if you want to use standard switches.

The backlit ones have dumbfuck placement of the LEDs, and need special versions of the switches with cutouts in the right place.
>>
>>54229188
>>54229179

Unmistakably Olivetti rubberdomes with sliders. You'll see for yourself.

They have very flat domes that only actuate at the bottom of the travel and are actually held against the PCB along 4 corners by the slider assembly, like tent pegs. When actuated the whole rubber pad containing the dome pops against its restraints.

Fujitsu peerless switches are another example of rubber domes with audible feedback. Those use a kind of inverted dome to create a popping sound.
>>
Should I get the magicforce or the Perrix 5200?
Both of them have MX browns and backlit, but the magicforce is more expensive after tax and shipping, not gonna lie the 5200 looks ugly, anyone have one without the stock caps on it?
>>
>>54233232
>Fujitsu peerless switches
>use a kind of inverted dome to create a popping sound.

Not sure if it's the dome itself or the plastic post freely bouncing inside the assembly when the dome collapses. It honestly sounds like a combination of both of those things at the same time.

>not gonna lie the 5200 looks ugly, anyone have one without the stock caps on it?

Fullsize vs sub-70% is kind of apples to oranges, isn't it? Also I don't think you can fix that kind of hideous with new keycaps.

I didn't try plugging it into a monitor yet, but I'm guessing that nothing would happen at all. The VGA port is the only connection it has. I was told that it was connected to terminals which were then again attached to unix machines.

Nothing. It's a serial connector. It might display on a terminal. But I doubt it.

So they are in fact not rubber domes. They have a small click leaf that at the bottom of the switch that gets pressed down and closes the switch on the PCB conductive pads.

Unfortunately not very suited for building a keyboard.

Certainly they could help in learning how to touch type. I roll blanks and I don't know how much it's helped to improve my existing skill, though I think it's a little bit better at least.

My work keyboard has blanks; this outright prevents hunt-and-peckers from using it. More skilled coworkers can use it, though it tends to cause hesitation. Generally such people still get frustrated when they try to use keys I've remapped, like how backspace is on caps lock. I keep a guest keyboard for this reason.

I don't know anything about some random chinkshit. What keyboard do you have? Does it show you how thick those caps are?

Yeah, should fit on that.

ducky zero w/ cherry browns. If you really want them LEDs, get a ducky shine.

If you want a "stealth" keyboard, you'll probably need to increase your budget. Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate is what you want (or perhaps Das Model S Ultimate).

I use both a Ducky Zero and Das 4 Ultimate daily, they're great.

I use blanks because finding quality keycaps with the right language for legends is almost impossible.
It took maybe two weeks to get fully used to it, but now I even know where all the symbols are without looking. Not going to pretend it's the best thing ever, but I'm pretty happy with it.

A matching red escape key should be shipping to me soon so I can complete the look.

What are some recommended keycaps for a Magicforce? I'm not sure what kind of profile they take. Any caveats I should know about? Any suggestions appreciated.

the code is just a v2 with lights

i just got their new vp3 60% board which i'm using now
its pretty great, but that's because it's a rebranded vortex pok3r

only other board i would recommend that i have experience with is a filco

i bought the wasd v2 because i had seen talk that they were at least as good as filco, which is just laughably not true at all.
too bad filco only has boards with blues browns and reds

I am not a large mechanical guy by any stretch (mostly just lurk these threads) so take this all with a grain of salt, but I enjoy mine. Literally just quieter reds, but this a good thing for me so I dont wake my roommate in the other room up while Im pounding out a paper at 3AM. I would say audio levels are comparable to my last full size rubber board unless youre bottoming out the keys at full speed.

I cant really say the extra cost is worth it unless you really want quieter reds without dealing with o-rings. If you can get it for a comparable price to the rest of the Strafes (like that $120 deal best buy had a while ago) its not so bad.
