I like your sister, too.
>>
>>54230054
I do, I just decided to have a streaming service for my TV since I plan on getting rid of my bed and getting a Sofa/Bed combo across from my TV. Computer is faced in other direction.

Besides, I grab the plug and bring it wherever so I love the concept.
>>
Chromecast and castnow. Watching X-files as I shitpost.
>>
Do they have one of these like the Raspberry Pi or the Intel Sticks where you can install your own OS on an ARM platform? Or am I just looking for the Intel Nuc?
>>
just get a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter
>>
>>54230086
lel no you don't. You don't even know who my sister is.
>>
>>54230180
I googled it. Explain it a bit more? Kind of interested. Any cool features?

That isn't stopping me.

Do any come with a decent browser? I need to be able to use Xfinity but Jewcast does not let you use a mobile browser with it.

For $150 I could just get a refurbished machine with an i5-2500, and 4GB ram so do any streaming stick beat that?

You stop that right now. She's mine and you can't have her! Not in a million years. Not even a billion.
>>
>>54230368
A billion? That's a lot.
>>
Do better; invest in an android box. Why, you may ask? XBMC, now under the name Kodi, has apps that can stream literally any tv show you could ever dream of in surprisingly perfect quality
>>
>>54230787
How much do those run for?
>>
>>54230143
i was looking into it today actually, the windows 10 IOT core, an OS that can be used on raspberry pi 2 and 3, is a little too early in development so no but in time it'll probably work
>>
>>54229857
Roku just dropped a new one. I would recommend that one. It's black, instead of the purple one you have in the pic.
>>
>>54230871
not too expensive, I have a dual core one that I bought before they released quad core ones on the market a month later (iwillcry). Literally google "Quad Core Android TV box" and a bunch will show up, the one I'm looking at right now, the Skystream X4, goes up to 4k on HDMI 1.4 and has a quad core 2.0ghz cpu with 2gb DDR3 for $115. You can get ones cheaper than this though.

Also note pretty much anything that runs android can use Kodi, so Nvidia shield console is also applicable
>>
>>54229857
If you're limiting yourself to a streaming stick, then >>54230886
is right. The new roku stick is pretty acceptable.

Only thing that it doesn't have that I want is an ethernet port, and the ability to stream video via portable hard drive (not every show on earth is available via the roku).

And if you want that, just spend another 15 bucks to get an old roku 3 on amazon.

Really, though, these are just convenience things for me. I don't have an HDMI Port on my laptop, and it's just cheaper for me to spend 60 bucks once than getting a new one that has an HDMI port.
>>
>>54230955
I have a (second?) gen apple TV laying around that I guess you can install kodi on, worth?
>>
roku stick, has the most app support
>>
>>54231044
if you can install Kodi on it then DO IT. Kodi itself has hundreds of apps for movies, tv shows, etc. It's literally its own app platform.
>>
>>54229857
think about getting something you can put kodi on
>>
>>54231082
I was planning on giving this a go awhile ago but forgot. Apple decided to cut support for youtube after the API update which is kinda fucking stupid.
>>
>>54231224
apparently Kodi after 15.0 doesn't support Apple TV 2 anymore but you can still use version 14.2 i think it is
>>
>>54230878
So Raspberry Pi-style devices should be able to play Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Spotify, etc on Ubuntu, if it had a lightweight DE?
>>
>>54231704
Probably, but i dont think ready yet and performance would be minimal, even for something as small of a process as viewing videos

>comes with a remote (voice activated option)
>easily rootable
>don't even need to root to install Kodi anyway
>Amazon Prime Video
>better spec than the Chromecast
>cheaper than Roku
If you're talking about sticks then you definitely should go with Amazon Firestick.
>>
>>54229857
Chrome was nice, but honestly I couldn't find a stick that goes past basic 1080p. If that is all you want any are fine really. If you have anything in a 10bit encode go Roku 3.
>>
>>54229857
I have the Chromecast and it works great. I suggest the Fire stick if you want Kodi
>>
>>54232626
Amazon software is always a lagfest and it doesn't allow casting from just any streaming site.
>>
i have the original chromecast stick.
Not used it so much recently, noticed it seems to lag the fuck out or black screen when ever I try to cast tab more often than not.
Is a gen1 chromecast outdated or something?
Chromecast updates purposely fucking it?
>>
>>54231704
to do spotify afaik you'd need to compile it yourself, use the web app version, or else run android on your pi. the rest you have already been able to do for a while now...
>>
>>54229857
does this shit only work with chromecast?
or does it support regular dlna/upnp servers?
>>
>>54237636
Chromecast only works with your phone as the remote control
You have to tether everything ELSE via the phone and wifi
>I have a Chromecast and it fucking sucks because I have to hound through the app store to find decent programs to do my media sharing
>>
>>54236837
There's a bottleneck somewhere in your local wireless network. Mine works fine on 802.11 N
>>
>>54229857
doesn't matter.
as long as you can run kodi on it and it has enough power for 4k in atleast 30fps (most movies are filmed with 24fps) you are safe.
>>
so, is chromecast the only one that would let mirror my phone screen on the tv?
>>
>>54237905
Never heard of the Chrome browser extension for Chromecast, where it allows you to cast your whole browser tab on the TV? It's like you hate watching porn on the big screen.

For screen mirroring from Chrome or Android, a chromecast is unsurprisingly the best.
