This is such a ridiculously open-ended and biased question that I can't possibly hope to answer it.

gmpc whips the llama's ass, I use it even on Windows for that reason.

mpd is very useful and easy for me. Even if I were to use a "normal player", I'd just point it to my music directory and drag and drop music to that directory.

mpd is a normal music player as far as I'm concerned
>>
>>54215062
Assume you have a life, a job, and some real hobbies

Do you
>laboriously fix tags across various downloaded and ripped albums, many too obscure (read: japanese) for automatic services to get right
or
>just use the EZ-PZ filesystem layout instead of tag search
>>
>>54215767
Yes it is, my bad for calling other players "normal". It always comes down to personal preferences I think, I tried using mpd but I'm a lazy fuck so I didn't want to config my library and all that stuff.
>>
>>54215793
mpd is actually made for lazy fucks, you just point it to your music directory and it just werks. Then you can clienthop all you want while keeping the same setup.

Other players require significantly more configuration and they're made for dragging and dropping. I remember how updating my huge music folder in foobar2000 lagged everything up in the GUI. Keeping the player and client separate eliminates that.

The only downside to mpd for me is how gmpc is no longer updated, and the lack of good non-cli clients.

Maybe I'm not making perfect sense, but that's how I see it
>>
>>54215793
Also I forgot to mention how mpd clients tend to favor directory view, which is my preference for music browsing. Tag browsing makes me want to pull my hair out if something is mistagged. But shit is rarely mis-directoried
>>
>>54215959
I feel you, whenever something is misstagged it only gives me more reasons to kill myself. I'm trying different players right now and I've been using deadbeef for a couple of weeks. I'll try using mpd again. What frontend do you recommend? I don't want to use ncmpcpp again
>>
>>54215989
gmpc. As I said, I use it even on Windows. and unlike foobar2000, it's good out of the box

You're right. Linux is a lot more flexible, but if you're not programming or trying to run servers on your computer then OS X actually isn't that much worse.
For instance I'm using my screenshot script that I wrote in 2011 for my Gentoo install and all I really needed to change was scrot to the OS X equivalent.
At least we're not using Windows.

it was a lot more than just that.after using linux for 10 years i became rather particular about layout and behavior and i wasnt able to tailer OSX to my eccentric way of computing without fighting it.
mac was like paint by number. you could chose the colors but the image was already set whereas linux is very much a blank canvas.
