And it's all fine because the programs that depend on specific architectures or specific versions of programs are compiled from source, so portage just links them with the version it knows it depends on.

Linux app designers have never made something that's nice enough for people to just learn to use. It's an OS of alternatives. The designers who claim to be trying to make something nice just make zany shit that not even mac users can stomach - that's also laggy, buggy, and unstable, so it's like ricer shit, if not worse, and uses more RAM. And "unstable" means "your programs will need to be tweaked every six months because that's how often we change the API and your distro won't keep old libs around" as much as it means "oops crash lol".
