Here's the difference:

Ubuntu user:
>I run Linux on my computer.

Arch user:
>I run Arch on my computer
>>
The real difference seems to be that Arch users inexplicably think they have a deeper understanding of computers by virtue of entering the same commands to download and install repos in the terminal.

Command line busy work is not a skill-set: Everyone else just wonders why they're wasting time on it.

Makes way more sense to just take an existing, fleshed out distro like Xubuntu and then purge the 20% that you don't want, instead of installing Arch and manually installing the 80% that you need.
>>
>>54205461
I purge more than 20% from Ubuntu.

>>

>>
>>54205683
Why call it GNU/Linux instead of Ubuntu/Linux? Does the GNU really contribute so much to the OS that its name deserves to be there over the name of any other group of software that makes up Ubuntu?
>>
this is true, you can see them fuck up their own help threads, they're like macfags and always have to be so vocal about it

>Hey guys, this software isn't working on my MACBOOK PROOOOOOOOOOOOOO

>Can't get software working on linux 3.x

Average Ubuntu user won't ever know what filesystem they use or how you are supposed to partition your system.

Faster and more intuitive. Rather than navigating several layers of abstraction, you can just say "install this." With the command line, you tell your machine what to do and it does it. It's far simpler.

And you don't have to remember the name of the package. Are you stupid? Every decent package manager has auto-completion and search.

Well the ubuntu user is incorrect and thusly an idiot. He doesn't run Linux, he runs Ubuntu Linux.

Behind this is the same reason why the GNU/Linux controversy is retarded: There's just too many independent components in the system to put them in the name (both GNU and Linux are only a small part of the typical distro). For clarity, just use the name the ditsributor chooses.

>>54205461
I use Arch because it's package manager and the way it handles dependencies is simpler, not other reasons, i've always used a graphical installer. I never brag about it, I know enough about GNU/Linux to know differences between distros aren't that much of a big deal.
>>
>>54208518
But that is the philosophy I've heard ascribed to arch. Simplicity of implementation is more important than simplicity of interface. Meaning it's a shittier user experience so that the developers don't have to do as much work.

Why anybody would want to use something like that is beyond me.

The only variable we account for when evaluating a tool is how complicated it is?
this means that if someone creates a command line interface that is purposely more complicated whoever masters it is master race even if he is less productive?

Elevating the entry barrier artificially is a drawback of the tool. If you can get the same done in an easier more productive way, it is objectively better.

Gentoo. It is amazing. I can have multiple conflicting versions of packages, or 64 and 32 bit libraries at once. And it's all fine because the programs that depend on specific architectures or specific versions of programs are compiled from source, so portage just links them with the version it knows it depends on.

See https://devmanual.gentoo.org/general-concepts/slotting/ and https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2015-03-28-true-multilib.html

If you've ever had to deal with dependency issues with packages you'll know why this is awesome.

Also being able to manually include (or exclude) certain features from any package or your kernel is extremely useful. For example, I was able to simply remove the SSL heartbeat extension and recompile my packages when the heartbleed vuln came out.

Did I even mention Portage?
>Portage works without any external repo.
>Portage supports using llvm icc etc to build with.
>Portage supports distcc.
>Portage supports slotting of dependencies.(multiple versions of python ruby gtk etc)
>Portage supports multiple kernels BSD Fedora debian etc.

My point is if you cannot pinpoint what packages are problematic then you probably don't have any packages problematic enough to remove. Although I do agree with your sentiment. If you really want a fine tuned machine why not use Gentoo? Honest question, though I have forgotten what this thread is about so maybe I am missing the point here.

I'm dismantling two old laptops with broken screens and rebuilding with whatever parts I find that are usable. I'll probably install Gentoo on that as part of the learning process. Seems appropriate.

And oh, I forgot to mention, I specifically know that I have obsolete packages as I accidentally kept unneeded packages when I updated to 16.04. I just don't know what they are. It was stuff like a C parser for Python and lib* packages.

>hurr durr it must be a time sink distro becuase I'm too retarded to use it

>hurr durr Arch users have an inexplicably big head

It's not inexplicable: it's because they are more knowledgeable than dumbasses like you using Xbuntu (at least on average).

And if you want to know the real difference it's that most Arch users have used an Ubuntu based system (and chosen to move on to better things) while fuck all Ubuntu (or similar) have used an Arch (or similar) based system but rather are just stuck in ignorance-ville.

Minimal linux distro: Install what you need

Fleshed out linux distro: find out that everything it comes with is complete and utter garbage, uninstall it instead of manually configuring the freedesktop.org spaghetti defaults system to prefer new programs, install what you need.

Linux app designers have never made something that's nice enough for people to just learn to use. It's an OS of alternatives. The designers who claim to be trying to make something nice just make zany shit that not even mac users can stomach - that's also laggy, buggy, and unstable, so it's like ricer shit, if not worse, and uses more RAM. And "unstable" means "your programs will need to be tweaked every six months because that's how often we change the API and your distro won't keep old libs around" as much as it means "oops crash lol".

while windows and OS X third party devs have relatively stable APIs to work against and no need to rely on community neckbeards to port shit for them....

It was something related to libvirtd or something.

If my experience on 4chan means anything, it's that anything that 4channers collectively hate on is usually good, while what they shill for is usually bad. Well, I lied I actually needed to google a guide from reddit to come up with this conclusion.

Before I begin let me clarify, I run arch on my T420, and I literally could not care less what you use. The Arch hate has gotten to a point where there are more Arch hate threads than there are "pro-Arch" threads. You guys are literally acting (for the most part) like the Arch users you claim to hate. Pot calling the kettle black.
>>
>>54206543
While I agree that just because you installed Arch doesn't make you "1337", the reason they say Arch instead of just Linux is because usually they have a distro specific problem, most likely because of them fucking with the package manager.
