Yep I said it, fuck them. They suck. Flip phones are better.

Most of those are in Asian countries though we can't get them in America unless we import them (more expensive) and that's even if they freaking work on your cell network.
>>
>>54192763
Ebay does
>>

Anon, the one I linked is coming to America.
>>
>>54192793
Oh? Which provider?
>>
>>54192822
It doesn't say a specific one. The non-flip ones for sale by the same company (Freetel) already seem to be unlocked for all American carriers.
>>
>>54192862
Least it's a start this needs to be a trend.
>>
If I could get a flip phone with google maps (with full narration) and tethering I'd be into it
>>
All I want is a plain fliphone with a really high battery life, and no other features besides calls and texts.

Literally everything available has been designed by a queer, so it has unnecessary design elements on it, usually a screen on the back, and that fucks up the battery life.

If it's a massive, full screen like >>54192749 though, yeah it's shit.
>>
>>54194040
Yeah I agree with this, a small touch screen is what's on the front of my phone and I mostly lock it but sometimes it's good for mp3 player controlling and stuff like that. Most of the time I just use that screen like a watch.

Oh fuck I had that phone. Dropped it in a toilet full of other dude's piss in gym class. Had to pick it up out of there with my bare hand. Whole phone smelled like piss and I washed my hands about 10 times. I still had piss hands for quite a few days. Went to Visual Basic class right after and everyone could smell it. That was an awesome phone.

I like smart phones better. I like being able to ask my phone what the forecast is or give me directions to places or call dominoes pizza etc.

You know, you're not 'cooler' for liking old tech. Dumb fuck neckbeard. I lived through dumb phone use and when mobile phones actually came out. I liked and appreciated the tech and I still have love for some dumb phones, but I'd never use one daily.

If you're purposely crippling yourself by using this in the modern day you're a hipster retard. The time has gone, get over it.

If all you do is use a phone for the basics like calls/texts, it makes more sense to use a dumbphone over a Smartphone which likes to sync/upgrade/update all sorts of shit in the background draining your battery while youre not even using the thing.

Personally, I never liked the large screen touchscreens. A happy medium for me was something like the Blackberry.
>>
>>54194701
It's not hipsters, it's neo-luddites. People FLIP THE FUCK OUT when they're asked to try new stuff, and regrettably the same applies for technology inclined which is as ironic as it gets. The psuedo reasons soon follow like
>Smartphones are tracking devices while dumbphones somehow aren't
>smartphones are just for playing games and getting on twitter and facebook

Same reason why people are still stuck in the 80s with amigas and BBS and 90s with usenet and IRC, they'd rather die than change.

IRC is nothing more than power struggles to kick and ban everyone you don't like, forming gay little circlejerks, taking a smarm-shit, and idling for decades. Add some time to this and you can add to that list nostalgia circlejerking about previous power struggles, circlejerks, smarm-shits, and idling for decades. Also I guess since other services have taken off, also add pretending to be old and talking what all the kids nowadays are using even though you're equally blathering on about a different form of nothing. It was this way in the 80s, 90s, 00s, and will be for this decade and every decade forever.

The basic argument here is that if the single thing you do is make calls then a dumbphone is better. Yet you are conveniently leaving out wi-fi tethering, business apps, VPN, web browsing for actual information, calendar sync, e-mail, GPS, music, and a trillion other things that you can have because it's a platform that you can run proper programs on instead of dinky little java "apps" on a 200x200 screen.

>IRC will be around long after I'm dead
Sure just like BBSes as they are right now it will be alive full of angry bitter people who pretend to like getting left in the dust like it makes them old or something and 99% of its traffic will be messages about "the good ol' days"

It's perfectly fine if you want to be a luddite, just admit it and nobody will have a problem. It doesn't tend to work out when you instead don't use anything made in the last 15 years yet insist all of that "new" stuff is shit so you have to come up with reasons like games and facebook that you weren't interested in anyway.
>>
>>54196522

The best part about these newfangled smartiophone devices that all the kids are using nowadays (am I cool yet?) is that you can find cases that offer the protection you need, this is great for the construction industry or for trips to places like this andwhen you're done with the use for it you can take it out in 15 seconds.

I didn't say new stuff was shit, no one in this thread did. Are you the old one, going a bit senile maybe?
My phone usage is:
90% on the charger
7% in my pocket
2% being used as a watch because I'm a faggot and I've accepted that
1.69% web browsing
0.1% text messaging
0.01% picture taking
0.3% alarms reminding me to do shit
I live out in the middle of nowhere and have cable Internet and even so it goes out maybe once every other year, so tethering would be nice but I don't need it. There are other useful things proper smartphones can do and they're nice and I might get one just for convenience, but right now I can't be bothered.
>>
>>54196648
the fuck are you on about
>>
>>54196679

Well yeah, that was my excuse back in the day, but I'm a wagecuck nowadays so my phone lives in my backpack. that's less of an issue.

For a long time though the Razr was the thinnest phone you could find* (reasonably), I used to get drunk and skateboard around a bunch with no backpack so having a thin phone that was cheap to replace was important to me.

It's hard to explain, mostly I'm turned off by smartphones by seeing all the mouthbreathing retards around me using them for "Insta" plus a dislike of touchscreen-based interfaces.

I'm gonna buy into the smartphone meme soon enough (my provider ends 2G service in december), but just like those Usenet fags I reserve the right to meme and feel smug about it.

I'm curious as to who your provider is, in the USA at least nearly every single phone plan either offers some amount of data, or some amount of data is only $5 more. Can easily get away with 500MB a month if you don't do video or music streaming. I've even seen pre-paid companies offer no plan that doesn't include data.

Certainly not recommending a brand new smartphone, I do agree that newer ones have too many gimmicks that drive the price up. Best value even still is an S3, rooted with a rom, I recommend CM11. Sub $200 for GSM and sub $130 for CDMA initial cost. But there are certainly even more cheap choices, I recommend BLU, they have brand new modern phones for $80 and they have AOSP roms which means you don't totally need to worry about rooting and getting another one if that bothers you. Used would obviously be less.

I recently did this with a friend of mine who was doing the same shit, he was on a flip phone and Verizon and on a shared plan where they were already paying for data and didn't even know. They even tried to turn the data off to "save money" but Verizon doesn't even let you do that anymore. I got him a Razr M for $25 on an ebay auction. Screen was perfect, back was scratched up, didn't care. Battery was fucked and it was annoying to replace but I did it. He was resistant to it every step of the way, gave all the typical luddite reasons. I did it just at the right time because he was using his shit flip phone since 2003? and its screen was not working half the time and he had to rely on restarting it. Anyway after a few days he admitted he was completely wrong to resist it and said he had been "living in the stone age" and was glad I "forced" it on him. Total cost was $35, he's rooted and on some CM KK rom.

Also, to rescind my IRC hating, smartphones have IRC clients, so you can use your data plan to jerk off with the other old people on the go. ba dum tis

I was waiting just for this! Get the otter armor box anon, then your smartphone can look like it's from the 80s and look like one of those brick phones, and you can be like a thinkpad user happy that your laptop is "black and ugly". So then when normies walk up to you, you can be rightfully bitter and tell them to go away

I was on BYO, but it was absorbed by Budget Mobile (an Obamaphone provider). They are limited to 3G, which limits your iPhone and your Android selection by quite a bit.

And I'd rather have a dumb phone that just werks(tm) than have an old android that is riddled with problems. I don't want an iPhone at all.

I get 350 min, unlimited texting, and 50mb for data (for pic messaging) for 15 bucks per month, and it's more than enough. My laptop can be used at work and at home. My Vita has GPS built in, at no additional cost.

Good enough for me.

would never tell anyone to go iphone but again I cannot stress enough how android was indeed shit as you think even as late as 2012. I am a massive samsung fanboy but even I must admit that they simply cannot make software at all, that's all that touchjizz shit you've heard about, an S3 is a powerful phone but can't even run its own software. That's why you root and on samsung you can't brick the phone unless you're really trying to, worst that happens is it Kernel Panics and you flash a new rom and try again.

If you're limited to 3G you can of course get any 4G or whatever phone as they still include the 3G modem exactly for this reason.

When the phone comes with an AOSP rom you don't have to worry nearly as much about getting another rom because AOSP means it's lacking all this manufacturer shitware that comes with it. Again BLU and other chink manufacturers make very great offers with $80 and even $50 models. If you want a manufacturer that ships AOSP and is more powerful than this, go for the google nexus series. If you care about offline GPS google maps has supported that for a while now along with a lot of other free third party apps.

Anyway I'm just letting you know there is no "secret smartphone charge" if you are paying for data of any kind. If you are on GSM you can just swap sim cards and I don't think the ISP can even know. You can also elect to turn off mobile data on the phone if you knew you didn't have it, they have that feature too.
>>
>>54196994
>If you're limited to 3G you can of course get any 4G or whatever phone as they still include the 3G modem exactly for this reason.

Not on Budget Mobile, you can't. You'll just wind up losing your number.

And I know I can do all that. I gave a smart phone a try a few years ago (Droid 3 from Moto). A month later, i went back to my dumb phone. I'm still happy with it.

Bring my laptop and Vita to work, and bring it home with me. No biggie.
