It has Chinese apps that aren't installed on the rest of the world versions and you can choose English during the installation. I've run a previous version before.

I usually use MATE, but have GNOME installed also. GNOME just feels really weird and sluggish in comparison, and it's less modular. The real advantage of MATE is that you can be quite flexible with how you set it up.

I use a setup with a bottom launcher and a panel up top with information, notifications and the classic menu which has applications, places and system settings in it. I really like being able to access everything quickly and easily. I also use compiz for advanced window management and such. It's really comfy.

If you want something else, you can also just have it look like KDE or Windows or whatever and use Marco, which is a low-resource window manager.

So far I've tested Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome.

Lubuntu, comfy and snappy.
Kubuntu, probably the best overall, but I don't KDE much.
Ubuntu, Unity is still a disaster
Ubuntu Gnome, 3.18 fixes a lot of stupid bugs, but if you don't like Gnome 3 there is nothing there for you.

I just love Ubuntu 16.04.

Installed it ( took 5 minutes )
Opened an app - installed latest nvidia driver and microcodes for processor.

Libre office was able to open my latest word documents and full format was shown there - this means that Libre seems to be enough for me - all features are included, the PDF document viewer works fine, I Like basically all the default software.

And If I ever have to open some retarded formated document, going to make an onedrive account and use the free preview...

Good shit m8. Smooth as fuck.

Then you update your sources with this command:
sudo apt-get update

Then you install the Numix Circle Icons, Numix GTK+ Theme, and the unity tweak tool with this command:
sudo apt-get install numix-icon-theme-circle numix-gtk-theme unity-tweak-tool

And finally you open the unity tweak tool with this command:
unity-tweak-tool

Then you go under, "Theme" and select "Numix."
Also if you want the icons you go to the Icons tab and select "Numix-Circle"

The fglrx driver from canonical never worked anyway.
Install fglrx from AMD's website instead if you really want it.

They dropped minimal a while ago.
Use the server ISO.

If you guys haven't started yet, you should start using sudo apt install or sudo apt update "X" instead of sudo apt-get install.

You not only have to type less shit but you also get a cool graphical progress bar.

The installer encountered an error copying files to hard disk: [Errn5] input/output

What tool can I use to burn the iso to the usb stick to avoid this error?

just format the flash drive as fat 32 and use 7zip to extract the iso to the root of the drive.
If you have UEFI I know this works for sure however I'm not sure if it works on Legacy BIOS machines.

Wish there was a way for ubuntu to have an even shorter apt command, similar to pacman in Arch.

sudo apt -u or sudo apt -i "blahblahblah" would be great.

If you have a android smartphone just use a app called drivedroid to boot and install Ubuntu. Just put the ISO on your phone and instantly boot it.

"Burning" the iso to USB sticks became too annoying to me.

I'd say the same to you all installing it now as well. I'll be getting upgraded in about a month, once all the large missed problems are discovered and patched.

I heard that the new unity/gnome have brought with them a new form of app-updating that moves the OS closer to a rolling-release sort of deal

Any info on that?

I just installed Standard Ubuntu 16.04 and I can't install new apps. The "Ubuntu Software" app just keeps searching, not finding anything. Even the frontpage (with "Editor's picks" etc.) doesn't load anything. The rest of my internet connection works flawlessly
anyone experience something similar?

My machine (Compaq CQ57) can't install ANY Linux distro without a kernel panic. The last distro that worked was the 14.04 LTS. 16.04 causes the same kernel panic during installation.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

Tbh it would be better to just do a reinstall in your case.
