Why would anyone use this?
>>
I get it for free through uni and Office is the best office suite there is.
>>
>>54126160
But Office 365, specifically? It has always-online DRM.

I got it for free for a year when I bought a used Acer Aspire Switch 10, shitty laptop but it was dirt cheap and it got the work done

So does Steam, which is installed on 100% of gay men PCs.

You can use Office365 without being online.
>>
For companies, it makes the licensing easier to deal with when you have multiple machines, a user base spread out geographically, and a desire to use the microsoft online service offerings

You know how "the cloud" seems ridiculous from the point of view of an unemployed neckbeard playing with IRC servers in his basement, but actually can be useful to businesses? It's kind of like that.
>>
>>54126233
I have it on my laptop and it takes away features after not connecting to internet for a few days, so it does have online drm, just not always online
>>
>>54126239
Why would you trust MIcrosoft with your data?
>>
>>54126250
Features of Steam don't work if you're not online, so it's exactly the same. You can still use Office365 while offline.

Besides, this is a total non-issue because the only time you're going to be offline is for minor connectivity interruptions.

>>54126258

Because we don't have child porn on our computers, unlike you.
>>
>>54126239
>For companies, it makes the licensing easier to deal with

This right here is the reason our company pushes our clients to get 365. After years of having cheap-ass clients who don't want the volume licensing go out and get their own individual copies of Office. Then having to worry about keeping track of all that shit and getting blamed when we are unable to find them (mainly 2013, can't get keys from installed 2013 Office unlike 2010 and previous). Just having it all in one single location online and the ability to swap keys around is pure bliss.
>>
>>54126258
Because I am not a pedophile, and it's not "my data" it's my company's data. If microsoft fucks up, well, it's microsoft, I picked a huge ass company that millions of other large, important companies trust. If I packed the company's data on a million spinning discs in the basement, and something gets fucked up, it's my ass on the line, not microsoft's.

I don't HAVE to use Microsoft. There are many other ways I can go about using computers and other document services. I consent to letting MS taking the data they do take, and it really isn't worth two shits either way. I have nothing to hide (from microsoft) because they have yet to ask for any sort of information that I would not have given during a typical retail transaction. You treat this like its the government enforcing big brother on you.

You mean the child porn?

Remember how I said business needs are different from neckbeard needs? This is a perfect example.

Someone like you lives in fear that someone will see his child rape porn. A breach is an existential threat to you: you will end up in prison for the rest of your life, this ends any chance of living whatever your idea definition of success is (let's assume for the sake of argument that there is one). One unauthorized party sees it, bang, very ugly end to everything you take for granted.

A company assumes there will be breaches, it is not "will there be a breach" but "what happens when the breach takes place, and how often will that be"

NSA or LEO warrant? Probably not a big problem as long as it doesn't end up in the news or cause a material loss to the business (it usually doesn't). There's a higher risk of this with "the cloud", for sure.

Someone hacks in and steals data? Depends on who and why, could be nothing, could be bad. There's not much higher risk here with "the cloud", arguably it's even lower depending on the setup. And if it happens, will the guy who chose "the cloud" be blamed? Probably not, with everyone else doing it too. This is called "industry best practices" and you follow them to diffuse the responsibility and thus limit the damage to your career should something go wrong.

A business is not you. A business has different concerns.
>>
>>54126448
Yes it is, and it's closed source so you can't even be sure of what it's doing.

It knows who you are, where you live, your operating system type, what games you like, and who your Steam friends are.

Would you let people be in the bathroom while you're taking a shit? Of course you wouldn't. Does that mean you're doing something morally or legally wrong? No, it doesn't.

Also, you guys are fucking disgusting. We're talking about TEXT-based speech here (though the argument remains the same for all data). Take your projections to another thread.

Further, information is always up to interpretation. It's possible to do nothing wrong and have that information be interpreted in such a way that suggests you did. That's at least part of why privacy is important and you shouldn't give it up so easy.
>>
>>54126575
>Would you let people be in the bathroom while you're taking a shit? Of course you wouldn't. Does that mean you're doing something morally or legally wrong? No, it doesn't.
I'm not really understanding the parallel you are trying to draw here between putting my company's transaction data on hardware that I can't physically see because it's at a data center, and taking a shit in public.

Can you explain that to me in a way that convinces me that you're not a pedophile who believes his kiddie porn stash is morally ok? Because that is how you are talking right now, even though you probably think you're talking like a pie-in-the-sky lawrence lessig type. You're not, and we can see right through you.

i use it for school. my college offers it for free since they adopted it.

>If you aren't paying for a product, chances are you are the product.
It's like I'm literally on Reddit.

The Steam application is a platform so Steam can distribute games that they get a cut of when I buy them. They don't have any economic incentive to go through my computer, and if they did, we would know..

You're not a pedo, right? And you don't watch any other sort of immoral stuff, like rape/murder videos? Then surely you'd be okay with going on TV and being hooked up to a lie detector while people ask you about what porn you like, right?
>>
>>54126755
So basically, your argument is "I have really fucked up porn, therefore businesses should continue using big ass servers on the 40th floor of some building chosen for its prestige value rather than its latency, and latency optimization/failover time reduction/general reliability improvements are the equivalent of taking a shit in public, because data equals porn"

Good job not convincing me of anything other than that I was right.

He's just mad because "normies" are becoming commonplace on /g/ and not all of us are wear tin foil hats and are deathly afraid of "THE BOTNET OH GOD". Seriously, it's good to see people on /g/ actually have common sense.

I mean, usually you get called a fucking shill if you're even remotely normal. It's a breath of fresh air that I'm not the only one who can trust MS. Seriously.
>>
>>54133558
I used to be a tin foil type, still am with regard to actual personal data (for instance I don't like posting my personal opinions on Facebook)

But I realized when I grew up that it's not so black and white, especially as computers get more and more involved in live

Who gives a shit if my excel needs to register with Microsoft, I'm not using it to track my sexual fantasies about my hot cousin. That stuff stays in my head where it belongs.

Why did people keep upgrading their office suite every other year when Word 95/97 would have literally taken care of all their needs?

Some people update just because its new so its gotta be better and faster right? People been told for years to upgrade, so that's what they do.

Personally I don't get why anyone would want to chain themselves up to always online requirement of anything other than games, it's understandable for multiplayer but fuck I don't want my word processor to NEED to be online for me to type up some shit.

SBS 2011 was fine. Especially when it was automated.

Office365 is not a replacement for SBS. That would be Server Essentials. O365 can augment however, for companies that did use Exchange / SharePoint.

Are you me?

I used to be this exact same way. I know it took me a while to grow up but after being on /g/ for so long, you start to grow tired of the immaturity. I know I called myself a "normie" just not and I'm not sure that's entirely certain but even things like anime on /g/ bother me. I'm here to talk about technology, not who's the most kawaii, senpai.

I get especially tired of going into desktop threads and seeing nothing but fucking anime waifu weeb shit. If I show off my desktop with some interesting artwork, zero replies. I bet if I posted with some hentai/anime girl doing a suggestive pose, I'd garner more attention or something but I'm not here for attention and honestly, it just gets so old...

Back on topic, you're completely right, I try to keep my crazy ass fetishes and whatnot in my head, not on my hard drive. I don't think the police are going to come barging through my door any second but other people sometimes use my laptop and it's more about practicality.

That's like complaining that Google Docs is always online DRM.

The files are saved locally in your OneDrive so you can still access them. I think it's important to have ways to view and edit these files locally but these web apps make collaboration significantly easier.

Most users who are not in a corporate environment and even the ones who are in a corporate environment do not use the full capabilities of Microsoft Office.

It's not using obsolete shit, it is only obsolete if it no longer performs the task you need it to because the new stuff will do it better. If the secretary just types up on her computer and formatting is already the tip of her computer expertise what makes you think newer will be better for these users? Not everyone is a techie, hate to say it but most of the people who use Microsoft Word could get their needs met using Wordpad.
>>
>>54138666
>what happened to my data? stupid Microsoft lost my data!
no, you just forgot that "just werks" has a lot going on under the hood

It's even more important when your "stupid normie luser secretary" doesn't read compatibility messages that Microsoft totally just puts in their to piss us off. Keeping up to date minimizes the risks of having different kinds of lusers exchanging revisions of the same file
>>
>>54139008
>Keeping up to date minimizes the risks of having different kinds of lusers exchanging revisions of the same file

Extremely specific situation there, for which most users completely ignore any functionality that the office suite may provide. Nobody is claiming that MSO isn't a good office suite, its functionality for the vast majority of users will simply boil down to MSWord and it will be used in a no different manner than Wordpad.
>>
>>54139200
Most users ignoring it doesn't mean it's not an issue, it just means they aren't savvy enough to figure out why they're having a problem. It just gets written off as "some computer thing".

I gather you don't do this stuff for a living, if you do I feel sorry for your users.
