When the extended support for win7 actually ends and someone has made a linux distribution at that point which actually mimicks most if not all of windows 7's features (including the incredibly fast and convenient explorer search + file sorting functionalities) and which is able to run all the games and programs which win 7 could run too out of the box then i will consider switching over. Otherwise i would hop onto windows 8/8.1 and just use that until that ones support ends too in 2023. Afterwards i don't know which OS i will be using. I actually can confirm this... Tried win 10 on 8 different machines and none of them work propperly after that shit. Solution after weeks of fixing shit was to go back to win 7/8.1 and install Linux on few of the machines where windows was not really a "must have".
One machine even "bluescreened" every 5 minutes on win 10 after using usb devices that had anything to do with sound.

On my other laptop win 10 started corrupting the hybrid sshd and became slower than old dos machine. I tried to install new drivers and fix it in various ways but nothing worked. Found out later on that this problem was created by a random win 10 update. I also heard that it happenes to other people too with similar hardware. Reverted back to 8.1 and that fixed everything.

Upgrade to 10. It's actually really nice and I've noticed very few issues. For some reason my good laptop takes about 10-15 seconds to open cmd. I rarely use the command prompt, so I don't care. Another glitch (which only happens once or twice a month) is that when I leave the laptop on the charger for about 6 hours and I close it, this sleep bug makes the screen all black. It's still on, just nothing is there. The "slide/pull to power down" thingy shows up and does nothing. Simply holding power and manually restarting the computer fixes it for a couple weeks at a time. I also hate the faggy start menu which can easily be replaced with classic shell. Just google it. It's totally free and brings back the windows 7 start with the search all programs thing I loved.
I've decided fuck it, gonna update.

I switched to Gentoo, but keep preinstalled Windows 8 that came with my laptop as a backup OS.
Is there any point in updating it? I fear it will just break half the programs, erase my bootloader (which is easily fixable, though), and I won't use it in the end anyway, but I'm not sure if not updating now will backfire on me later when I will need to run something that doesn't work with Wine and only works on 10.

I upgraded to 10 from Win7 last week after realising that the OS was so outdated that shit was already falling off the support cycle.
EntityFramework 7 wouldn't build on it, my Bluetooth 4.0 dongle wouldn't work on it, TRIM barely supported on my SSD. All worked fine after moving to Win10. Windows 7 is no longer a modern OS.

Yes. You have to have an eligible install of a previous Windows, then take the upgrade.
Depending on your hardware, the upgrade may or may not work. If it works, you have an unstable Win10 installed over whatever was there before ... so best to do a fresh install and completely wipe the drive.
Microsoft now has your system (basically, the mobo) permanently registered with that Win10 license and it can be reinstalled at will whenever you wish
You cannot resell the license because it's tied to that specific system. You can sell the motherboard and whoever buys it should be able to install Win10.

I did break it a couple of times, but it was my first Linux, I did an intentionally unstable and hipster setup to challenge myself, and it still mostly stopped bugging out after I got X fully working and set up the important configs. An occasional stupid ebuild breaks something on my Unstable, occasionally have to wait so that Unstable becomes Stable Enough, all fixable within half an hour, in case I want to bother at all and not just downgrade temporarily.
Well, OK, there was this thing with freezing TTY framebuffer, but it recently disappeared, and I'm like 75% sure it was some kernel bug, and it didn't affect me much in the first place because's it damn TTY.

Pro-tip: one reason to clean install a fresh Win7 (or Win8) is so you can control all the personal info embedded in the installation. You can create a profile of minimum data and an entirely alternate personal profile. Which then will be embedded in the Win10 upgrade, and you will need to register the Win10 upgrade with personal data (such as email address, although technically you don't "have to," many features get locked away from you if you don't have use a registered microsoft profile tied to the Win10 license).
So, prepare an alternate personal info profile ahead of time, and register that as a microsoft profile with all the alias info. And don't lose it ... you may need it to active/reactivate restore or regain access a few years from now.

Fellow Gentoo user. Never had a gentoo box go down on me really. Use it on my Workstation. I update once a month and whenever major GLSA sec updates crop up. It's better to stay minimal in the kernel side of things and keep the CFLAGS conservative, although I've started to put LTO and graphite loop optimizations in specific programs. Also, avoiding qt, gtk, KDE, and GNOME dependencies whenever you don't need them is pretty good as you can get twisted up into dependency hells if you don't. My rig has about 50 CAE/CAD tools (with MPI and PBS support) along with some developer tools and I am still under 600 packages. Another protip is to EFI stub boot or use an EFI bootloader like rEFInd if you use UEFI bios. I use XFS on my root and home though BTRFS is more recommendable in my use case. Most can be content with ext4.

Microsoft doesn't care where or how or what version you upgrade from, so long as it's Home or Pro. They are using this offer to rope as many people into Win10 as they can and to eliminate as many pirated copies of previous versions as they can.
I can state categorically that Win7 Pro and Win7 Ultimate upgrade to genuine, activated Win10 Pro sing DAZ because that's what I've done for about 20 friends and family in the past year. I've read a lot and heard a lt that Win8/8.1 presents no problems with various pirated activation hacks, I've just not personally done it.
Most have had Win7 Home OEM on their HP or Dell or Acer or whatever. I performed a clean Win7 Ult 64-bit on those machines (because I have a clean pirated copy on a flash drive), DAZ'd them, got basic updates working, made sure all hardware & drivers were working, then took the Win10 upgrade. All worked.
Caveats: the systems were reasonably modern, like ~2007 to 2013 manufacture. So Win10 didn't fail on any of them.
Also, you don't need to install any updates on the new pirated install ... Win10 will take care of whatever microsoft wants to take care of during the upgrade. I just let a few of them in and configure the update scheduler so that some of those settings are migrated as legacy into Win10 from the beginning.
You MIGHT need to uninstall the microsoft drivers for some hardware and find the correct Win10 drivers from the manufacturer's website. Some of the Win10 generic drivers from ms either don't work or are retarded.
