I currently have a casio fx-300ES beside me. Not the best in the series of rom 18 calculators, but I like it. The "r" exploit and soft-upgrade trick is quite good fun, and may allow for arbitrary code execution (which I've been looking into). Pic very related, it's the screen of the calculator part way through the exploit and upgrade (captured from an emulator, but it works on real hardware).

I remember back in grade 7 we would perform a series of operations to have our 570MS flash nonsense on the screen.
Years later, when I thought back about it, it's interesting that there are people out there looking for bugs on these devices. I wonder how they managed it.

There was also a hardware trick to switch the 500MS to 570MS mode.

Hi folks. I am about to buy a hp 50g or ti-83 plus, to replace my bootleg casio with. Anyone here could tell me the pros and cons about them ? Which one should I buy ? I am studing business related math tbqh, so the 50g would be kinda overkill or would it worth the extra 30 bucks ?

HP50g:
+ cheap af right now
+ RPN or algebraic (you can choose)
+ powerful ARM chip
+ powerful & efficient programming in RPL
+ CAS (symbolic solving & calculus)
+ unlimited precision numbers
- you have to read part of the manual

ti-83 plus:
+ they will teach you it in school
- complete garbage
- overpriced

I own the small and large versions (dm-41, dm-15L) and it's a nice calculator.

The firmware he cooked up has way more steps / registers than a stock 15c. If you like the 15c you'll love the DM-15L.

Way faster too in case you're waiting all day for your programs to run.

Complex numbers take up 2 stack slots, so you can only work on two at once (if this is your poison).

It lacks a handy UNDO function, but it does have LASTx. This makes undoing a mistaken operation a two-step procedure.

Download and play with an emulator before you decide.

Even if you're not used to it, you've got to eventually learn RPN to unlock the full potential of the calculator. RPL is a very nice programming language and you'll find the calculator is completely customizable. (Custom functions, menu, even bind your most used programs to key combos.)
>>
>>54107566
RPN was one of the reasons why I got it.
I've used RPN calculators on my pc and phone before and it seemed much more logical than normal input.
The other (main) reason is that I'm an EE student, so all the symbolic math and linalg comes in handy.
Going from a transfer function to a plot of step response by pressing only a few buttons is awesome.

The HP 9000/300's HP-IL keyboard will interface directly with the HP-41 the HP-71b if they have their HP-IL modules, and there are many plans for simple adapters for other keyboard types.

You could do this in the 1970s.

Also serial keyboards exist for the HP-48 series though I have never seen one myself.

You can have many devices in an HP-IL loop. Pretty neat protocol and it's still in use today as an industrial computing thing.

Which do you like better?

If you have to choose, I'm dropping you off on a deserted island with one of the two calculators and an adequate supply of batteries.

I would go for the 48 myself (actually I would bring a 50g).

Casios are the most normie-grade calculator out there.

Seriously why can't you into RPN like a grownup?

Good show, nice machine.

Pain in the ass though if you want to try to use it as a normal calculator. You should get a WP-34s before they are all gone.

>Going from a transfer function to a plot of step response by pressing only a few buttons is awesome.
Checked and why do Casio and TI make every different 'mode' separate? It's not easy to use the different facilities of a calculator together unless you're using an HP-48 series.

>>54107351
Here's a little advice for new 50g users. You can use NiMH rechargeables, they work fine but make sure they're the low self discharge type. hpcalc.org has a huge software library, make use of it. I would install HLP49 from there, it's a full online manual for the calculator so if you want to look up a function or see how to do something you can without going into the manual. Also the thing can't use bigger than a 2gb SD card so just get a nice cheapo old one. 2gb would easily store every bit of software written for the 50g series (thousands of programs) so you'll never run out of space. Also learn how to back up the calculator to the SD card, and restore it.

Also if you can wrangle up an inexpensive 82240b printer they're nice to have around. You can print text or graphics with it.

Damn good machine there.

>Does casio even make their own calculators?
Actually Casio and HP both use the same Taiwanese company, Kinpo, for their calculators now. Clearly the Casios are a Kinpo product that HP and Casio both re-brand.

HP struggled with Kinpo, and some quality was lost such as double shot keys, but in some way they are improved as well (gone are the shitty heat stakes for example).

Teaming up with Kinpo gave birth to some horrid calculators from HP though. Take a look at this piece of shit, which actually is a pretty capable machine even though it looks like it needs to go into the trash.

The only thing that's prevented me from making a wp-34s are the matrices. How are they? When I screwed around with the emulator, you had to type in a matrix descriptor like 12.0203 (2x3 matrix, starting at register 12), and then edit it using MIO or MED. It all felt kinda clunky compared to the 15c
>>
>>54108739
Yeah it's not quite as easy as the 15c but once you get used to it, it's ok. I really prefer the 50g for matrices.

My TI-84 Plus has served me well for well over 6 years now. Only thing I had to do was to clean the battery contacts because Texas Instruments apparently couldn't be arsed to make them gold-plated, and the corrosion caused the calculator to not turn on sometimes.

The one I've unboxed today is a spare.

Actually the other one is a spare now, the newer one has the newer firmware and I haven't made a firmware update cable yet.

Enjoy, you're going to have a good time anon.

I would highly recommend getting the printed manual, it might be the best manual made for any calculator, ever, and a couple bucks will go to the authors. They really knocked themselves out with this one, it's an amazing hack on what was just a mediocre business calculator.

Unlike the WP-34s it has arbitrary length integers, but the WP-34s uses decimal128 for that ultra high numerical precision.

I thought it was a shill here telling everyone to get them, but then I thought, who shills calculators?
Then I read up about them and they have a very dedicated fanbase. I had money so I ended up buying a few at once and I've been messing about with the programming languages but mostly just using them for checking maths results, etc. I'd recommend at least getting a second hand one to try one of them out.
