The GNU OS is an OS that is modelled after Unix and is developed by the GNU project.

Fedora/RHEL and Debian are the biggest names. Ubuntu is a decent desktop oriented OS based on Debian. But the problem with Ubuntu and Fedora is that they ship nonfree firmware by default. So if your PC can run without it, Debian is probably a better choice.

LINUX IS THE OS

We simply started using the name of the Kernel for the whole thing. LANGUAGE IS DYNAMIC LIKE THAT.

IT'S "LINUX" on WIKIPEDIA. I'TS RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX NOT RED HAT ENTERPRISE GNU/LINUX YOU RETARDS.

RMS INVENTED THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN "KERNEL" AND "OPERATING SYSTEM"
HISTORICALLY, NO UNIX OR UNIX-BASED OR NON-UNIX-BASED SYSTEM SEPARATED THE KERNEL FROM THE OS
BOTH LINUX AND GNU SOFTWARE WERE CREATED/RELEASED UNDER FREE/COPYLEFT LICENSES
IT WOULD BE AS CORRECT TO SAY THAT THE LINUX OS "MAKES USE" OF THE FREELY AVAILABLE GNU UTILITIES AS IT WOULD BE TO SAY THAT THE GNU OS "MAKES USE" OF THE FREELY AVAILABLE LINUX KERNEL, EXCEPT AS NOTED ABOVE, FOR VIRTUALLY ALL OF COMPUTING HISTORY, KERNEL == OS
FURTHERMORE THE GNU OS ALREADY HAS A KERNEL CALLED "HURD". THEY'VE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE IT WORK FOR DECADES.
IT WOULD BE MOST CORRECT TO SAY THAT EACH DISTRIBUTION COMBINES FREE (AND SOMETIMES NON-FREE) COMPONENTS INTO A COMPLETE OPERATING SYSTEM AND THEN CALLS IT WHATEVER IT WANTS TO. SOME CHOOSE TO CALL THEMSELVES GNU/LINUX. OTHERS CHOOSE TO CALL THEMSELVES LINUX. THE FREEDOM OF SELF-DETERMINATION RESTS WITH THE CREATOR(S) OF THE FINAL DISTRIBUTION
RMS IS A FASCIST WHO WANTS TO RESTRICT OTHER PEOPLE'S FREEDOMS FOR HIS OWN AUTISTIC SELF-SERVING EGO

>>

Historically, application programs were specifically programmed for each individual machine. RMS started his work as an OS programmer in a time when people realized that there ought to be a "platform" to manage hardware resources and associated computer system. RMS was living in the time when operating system kernels were distinct computer programs to system utilities like a text editor, assembler, compiler and command line interpreter. The distinction was always there and he was an operating system programmer writing operating system programs in Lisp at the birth of operating systems.
>>
>>54089914
Yeah, technically Linux is just the kernal, everything else is GNU. The whole OS is normally called Linux but really calling it GNU makes more sense.

Normally the OS and kernel are made by the same person and they just call it by the OS. You're not familiar with this situation because it's not common. Doesn't mean it's not GNU/Linux

What do we do for the other hybrids? freeBSD userland with linux kernel? GNU userland with freeBSD kernel?

Well I like arch, debian is too outdated and fedora is bloated, when I tried to remove pulseaudio from fedora gnome went with it, on arch I don't have these kind of problems. From what I've read, ubuntu is botnet + buggy and bloated. Mint is ubuntu based so I haven't tried. So far for me, the best distro is arch linux

DEbian is not outdated, is stable. I don't use Arch or Gentoo because a simple update can break your system.

Hurd is actually not the GNU kernel. The GNU kernel has a different name. Hurd's purpose is to be the Unix kernel replacement while not being a kernel at the same time.

The point is: without Linux, GNU would be fucking nothing. Linux made GNU known in the first place.

So maybe this ungrateful cunts should think about calling it "The Linux+GNU software foundation".

>I have the freedom to call this fruit an orange but doesn't mean that I'm doing something good when I do it.

No, let me interject right there.

Please stop calling it "Pineapple", in fact it is an Bromeliaceae. Also without South America there wouldn't be any pineapple.

So unless you want to opress me, call it "South America + Bromeliaceae + Pinapple".

No, that's as illogical as calling it Linux. The Linux kernel is a vital component, but not the whole OS, while Python, the language used to code a lot of it, is more equivalent to the material used to make something. Neither makes sense as a label to apply to the whole OS. GNU refers to the OS as a whole.
