>>
>>54083909
Do `pacman -R linux` then `pacman -S linux-lts`. That gives you a slightly older kernel which is supported for longer which might not be as broken.
>>
>>54084226
That's what I did, but it seems that the older one didn't load the kernel modules for vbox, or maybe there's another issue I don't know about. Now I can log in but my mouse and keyboard don't work.

You are correct in that you care about new users since that's the only way to get them on board and eventually they will become advanced users. The problem here is that by having more people using it, it threatens their sense of secret club. Linux has taken off and is a relative success. If you still want to be a special snowflake, you pretend to use BSD instead. But if you still want to use linux, but still be "different", you use some obscure distro. This process repeats itself for BSD as well, and while it's more rare, is quite hilarious to watch.

>>
>>54087508
Yes, you can install from upstream on other distros, but you don't get the same level of support for the latest packages. If I'm going to be installing the latest dev version of some program (and yes I need to do this for my work), I need there to at least be a chance that the maintainer of the package will be there and know what could have broken it, have others with the same problem searching for a solution, or at least have a community that's experienced enough with similar problems to help me. I don't have time to fuck around on debian with broken programs and find only one other guy who tried to install it a year ago.

openSUSE nowadays provides a rolling release as separate option (openSUSE tumbleweed)

Debian and openSUSE provide a stable base system, and for specific parts (e.g. KDE, X11, Firefox) you can add additional repositories which do have rolling releases. It allows you to keep a stable base system, and yet use the latest software you like
