afaik, modern emoticons/emoji are unicode code points. they aren't image substitutions for recognized ascii combinations, they are their own defined standardized characters. apple/google/m$/firefox/etc. all use their own special emoji system fonts. i suppose you can make your own font that uses web 1.0 emoticons for emoji code points.
