sort of. you can get a job at start-ups without any real education if they like you. be warned however, startups are often "businesses without business models," and you might have to deal with long hours and bad technology stacks. all the same, since you have experience in the industry, your best bet would be some sort of nepotism. going to tech events in your city and shmoozing / ingratiating yourself to horrible nerds is a good idea

oh, you have a degree. good. if you've worked there for a year or two without any real raises now is the time to pivot into another position for increase pay and title. there's no point sticking with a single corporation, those old days are over
>>
>>54071017
Just start searching for companies and jobs LinkedIn, indeed, and glassdoor. If you have the experience and handiwork to prove it, a lot of employers don't really care what degree you had as long as it's a relevant field. They often say "computer science or related degree" Even if it's not in the relevant field, experience trumps all. Any degree. Start searching before you move, employers may compensate you for the moving expenses.

Didn't wanna start a new thread for this.

>working as a freelance technician for years now
>small business owner calls to have me come check out the computer that runs his registers and shit
>power supply fan is burning up and the hard drive is 12 years old
>also, he has never dusted it, ever
>SMART indicates the total runtime on the drive is something like 70,000 hours
>shocked that it hasn't burst into flames by now
>dust it, reproduce the issues, give him a quote on parts and labor
>discuss how he wants it done
>says he'll be fine with letting it go during the afternoon so long as it's back the next morning
>he pays me and I order the parts
>call him back to ask when it'd be a good time to pick it up when the parts come in
>suddenly says that the computer's data is too important and that he can't let it leave the shop
>says that he'll call the guy who created the software for his register and call me back
>hangs up on me abruptly
>try calling back to tell him that I can just do the work there and he sends the call to voicemail

The fuck do I do? Why are customers always like this? Why can't they just communicate?

Also had a guy recently who got scammed by another local shop for a "hard drive replacement" for $300, then took it back to them after the drive failed 6 months later. This time, they told him that now the motherboard is bad and they'll need another $300 to replace it. Despite explaining that the only thing wrong was the hard drive and showing him proof, he still took it to them and paid them another $300.

I'm losing my fucking mind. How do you find work doing this for someone else, because after years of this shit I might strangle the next person who calls me and tries to grill me for info on how to fix it themselves with no intention of paying me for anything.
>>

Mind telling us how much you make? Dutch cs fag here and I'm afraid I'm getting too optimistic from all these american salaries.
>>
>>54071239
I'm at 8 years, but experience isn't the only factor in determining pay. Industry and location heavily influence it. For example, a south California job will pay far more than a central Kansas job. Additionally, the tourism industry may pay more than a financial firm.

In my case, I'm at a vacation resort company in Florida which is currently making enough money to basically hand out like candy to employees.

Both places I worked at had "friendly environments", they were real nice to work at, but they were both low-paying. At the end, it's your future. A less "friendly environment" will also shape your character, so choose it if the salary is higher, and don't be cucked. If they said no already, then you have to move, since now you're suspicious to them

He didn't say it would shape his character for the better.

Working with fucksticks increases your ability to advocate for yourself/ push blame onto other people/ how to look out for backstabbers/ backstab other people yourself, which are all highly valuable skills in a financial sense. Your cortisol levels will also skyrocket, and it becomes very difficult to just flip the switch and turn it off at the end of the day (your wife/gf will leave you).
>>
>>54072124
Higher pay entails more delicate situations, which is exactly why you'd have to deal with assholes, when a subordinate fucks shit up
>>

>>
>>54072219
And if you can't deal with the incompetence of wankers, knowing that not everyone in this world is happy-go-lucky, you weren't cut out for a high-paying job.

In any case, my original position holds. A job with wankers that pays high is better, because if you're good enough, wankers don't affect you, at the same time, the wage is a better investment of time.
>>
>>54072268

oracle's cert exams are complete bullshit. They test how well you can memorize the spelling/capitalization of methods that take certain params and presence or abscence of certain methods on their favorite classes, how well you can spot compiler errors like Public class (capital P), and how well you can predict the outcome of a method that performs arbitrary, convoluted, baseless math on 5 ints, doubles, booleans and floats titled a1, a2, x, y and z, in your mind acrosd multiple nested and badly designed fors, whiles and switches. The companies considering those certs a mark of quality programming is just more proof of corporate bullshit and managers sucking corporate cock.
>>
>>54072571
PS so no, the certs are worthless to a programmer looking to further his skills and whatnot. All theyre good for is to suck manager cock

Some of the things I've seen blow my mind. A project's lead developer tells them that there's no way the project will take less than two years, and their response is to hire a group of Indian consultants who assure them that it'll be done in a year flat, no problem. They were shocked when it took two and half years, and laid off a bunch of people.

I've already dodged one such project, but I'm keeping my resume ready so that I don't have to put up with bullshit like that.

Yes. From your post it sounds like you have a very generic and easily replaceable skillset (no offense). The company is likely to bring someone else in at the same pay who is the same as you or even better than you. Of course if they like you they'll probably give you the raise, but are you willing to risk losing the job without a backup plan?

is it possible to have a 'standing offer' from another company just in case you got fired? like, i work at company A, and talk with company B. could company B say 'yeah we will hire you any time in the next 6 months if you choose to jump ship from company a'?

How can you pad your resume without lying?
>>
>>54075774
"Jump ship" means to quit/leave the job. In the post's context it would mean "yeah we will hire you any time within the next 6 months if you choose to leave your job at company a"
>>
>>54076268
Why would it be illegal?
>>
>>54075725
Its not illegal but most companies are NOT going to give you a standing offer unless you're at the top of your field. Generally you have a week to say yes/no before they move onto another candidate.

Knowing so many people working at a huge company is enlightening. Internal API responses in development return production data, management almost always approves access to APIs because they get so many requests and can't be ass'd to read them all. There is almost no two-factor authentication, so a hardware keylogger in a DBA's keyboard would get a good set of credentials to get access to shit. Management is paranoid over security (because they could go to jail), but they don't fund any work to improve it.

A few years ago someone with a forged cert attached a kali linux box to the intranet and changed some intranet sites, just to prove it was possible and their security was shit. This is a fortune 50 financial/insurance company if that makes you all feel better. They cover up data leaks unless required to disclose them by law.

Excellent pay, great benefits, work from home options.... but not what I envision myself doing longterm. I'm using the company's educational assistance to enroll back in school as a stepping-stone into a PhD program. It isn't easy... but I'm doing all I can to make it work so I can move on with my life.

Most of my team members are technical and ironically I'm viewed as non-technical because I'm not the engineers developing for production environments. I don't code on a day-to-day basis but I do a ton of self-study on my own. The hard part isn't coding, it's understanding the 100s of data sources they use and how they're connected and understanding political landscape.

I don't know. I just want out. I want to be doing research. I'm never excited about work and feel like I'm dying of depression for not being in grad school. My undergrad grades are shit, so taking courses now to improve my GPA to improve my chances at top grad schools. Luckily I already have recommendation letters + research experience as an undergrad. Within the next few years I'll be applying for PhD programs at top schools. My self-study is going along nicely. Been reviewing and understanding theoretical math in CS. It's like an extension of what I studied in my math degree. Plan to do more research on the side with some professors. I really hate corporate life. Most of my coworkers are cogs. They're more interested in the political game than anything else. I'm taking courses next semester at a top school with a clean slate GPA. This is the first step at improving my situation before I apply. All I do is self-study CS, I'm getting ready.
