Why did it fail?

It was supposed to give access to students of poor countries.
>>
>>54065814
it didnt fail
>>
>>54065814
-bad quality keyboard
-almost no upgrade options
-terribly small internal storage
>>
>>54065814
Netbooks have largely been deprecated by chromebooks unfortunately.
>>
>>54065814
I liked my EEE PC for taking notes, but the processor was way too slow. It couldn't even browse properly with 1.60 GHz.
>>
>>54065814
All of its use cases got replaced in different parts by ultrabooks, tablets, and chromebooks.
>>
>>54065841

And tablets. I had a 10" Eee netbook, and my two-year-old iPad kicks its ass all over the house in every conceivable way.
>>
>>54065814
>1st gen atoms or 65nm ULV celerons
>1GB RAM
>shit screen, worse than almost everything that was available back then
>shit battery life on even 9cell batteries
>2/4GB SSD options

That's why. That;'s mostly because of shit power hungry CPUs tho.
>>
>>54065814
Because fuck poor people.

I can either create tech costing me 100$ per piece and sell it for 150$ to the poor, or create 200$ piece of tech and sell it for 800$ to the mass consumers. Its only about profit.
>>
>>54065882
My 10" acer aspire 522
>AMD Fusion C50
>4GB RAM
>Very nice screen
>Over 3hr battery life on 6 cells, 4 years after it was purchased
>250GB SSD

Price: $300 4 years ago, plus $150 upgrades. Why did this fail exactly?
>>
>>54065979
>c50
extremely shitty CPU, even worse than E350
>3hrs
>not 10 hours
Familia, 3 hours cannot be considered as usable in any way.
>>
>>54065814
These things mostly disappeared (along with UMPCs) because the technology wasn't far enough along at the time. We've just barely had computers coming with hardware that would excel in this application and a small tablet with a keyboard dock is the modern equivalent.
>>
>students of poor countries
And then you look at these poor countries and realize that internet access is the last thing these people need.

If it were possible to topple the governments of Africa without being white-guilted to death the world would be a better place.
>>
>>54065909

Hahaha, you think the shitty Eee line went extinct because it was *good*? You are a dumb, delusional faglord. These things were awful. I had one of the best ones you could get, the 1201N, originally priced at ~$500. I even upgraded the RAM and installed an SSD. The thing is still trounced today by a $300 iPad Air 2. The newest Raspberry Pi could probably compete with some of the less impressive netbooks of 2010.

If you think computing is somehow less affordable now, you're dumb even by /g/ standards.
>>
>>54066037
What the fuck are you talking about
>>
>>54066089

Did I fucking stutter, mongoloid?
>>
because they fuckin sucked, especially with preinstalled windows
>>
>>54066008
>extremely shitty CPU, even worse than E350
Well yeah, because it's a netbook released 5 years ago. A chromebook released today should reasonably be 10 times faster, but they are hardly even as fast, despite being at least as expensive with shittier storage options.
>Familia, 3 hours cannot be considered as usable in any way.
Please show me a computer that has over 10 hours of battery after 4 years of use.

>I fell for the netbook meme

Buying this was a mistake
Installing Vista on it was an even bigger mistake

On the plus side, it wasn't completely awful for uni (apart from the disgustingly low screen resolution)
>>
>>54066253

My 2013 MacBook Air gets 8 hours. And, despite retards on /g/ screaming about Macs being disposable and non-repairable, my first battery exchange at the Apple Store will probably cost within $20 of what a new battery for your netbook will cost.
>>
Fuck all y'all niccas

I had an EEE 10h or whatever (the first one with a hard drive), installed OSX on it and 2GB stick of RAM, 100% hardware support.

ran better than Vista or XP with better battery life.

I even had Windows server VMs running in VMWare fusion for my classes, and they ran fine too.

I don't regret getting my Asus 1015PEM Eee PC years ago. What I do regret is being lazy and all and not getting a new battery for it yet. Replaced the old HDD with a spare 64 GB SSD I had, and put in a 2 GB stick of RAM.

It runs Lubuntu like a champ, even with it's netbook low powered hardware. Had Manjaro running on it too after trying that OS out for a while.

It's my out and about device when I'm sitting at Shari's or somewhere waiting for all the shops to open up around town. Well until the battery crapped out about a month ago. I really need to get a new battery for it. BUT first I got to find it...it's somewhere either in my car or my room....
>>
>>54066341
Buy an ssd/faster hdd for half the price and actually provide a quality job?

This piece of shit with probably the first of the Atoms or something? Probably 512mb memory, a whopping 4gb SSD.
The worst ganoo/leenex distribution I've ever seen (Xandrox-based) as the factory OS probably didn't help.
>>
>>54066021
China is already recolonizing it

i still have on lying around. my main issue with the eee was the battery. it drained faster than i could take a piss, even if it was unplugged.

i got the very first model 701A, with a 900MHz celeron, wasn't even an atom
i regret selling it, i sold it before i got into linux, now i can think of plenty i could have done with it
>>
>>54067036
he said that the battery drained if the machine was unplugged. This is a common occurrence with ALL batteries in that they drain when being discharged.

What he should have said instead of "unplugged" was "powered off".
>>
I think I might buy a netbook for giggle and shit.

No, seriously. I'm tired of hauling big-ass 15.6" "gaymen" laptop" to the library when the only thing that I did is reading slides, word processing and listening to the music.

Looking for this for a while. looks decent enough for a beater

You dumb underage fucks disgust me. It didn't really fail, people used netbooks for a short period of time before they got killed by better alternatives. They fucking sucked but there was nothing that came close to portability and the market of ultraportables didn't exist at the time.
The moment when laptops got smaller and more portable netbooks were done for.
>>
>>54065841
>>54065872
Also second hand ultraportables.
>>
>>54067442
If the laptops have an extra hd bay he can charge like $100 for tune-up + ssd but he won't do it because it would mean less profit (but more loyalty/recommendations by customers)

Anyway he shouldn't be fucking charging 70 euros for it. What does he do anyway? Defragment and remove a bunch of autostart entries/debloat? Of course people will demand a better job of it for that price.

i had the 701 2G.
literally not enough space to compile it's own kernel.
>>
>>54066501
we have that option too, but they never go for it
probably because its worth more than the netbook itself
>>
>>54065814
there is way too much junk hardware on the market for it to be successful

I'm in univ and I use a Acer netbook that only has a 1gHz dual core. Yes it's slow as shit but it's handy to write papers with and do online math homework. It has a 500GB hard drive so I've loaded it up with all my music to listen to while working. The battery life is a plus.
>>
>>54065979
Because its not that old. Ive used one of the first gen EEE PCs with N270 Atom and 1 GB DDR2 runing XP, maybe 2-3h battery. But it was a dream, I remember it played 2D games when Ive been in the forest instead of school.

How would they know how to use it? Unless you're taught what it is it may as well be a paperweight.
>>
>>54066037
Oh, there's you're problem. That wasn't the best of the line. I have a 1005 still going strong, very useful and portable and despite being plastic, pretty sturdy. They're still making nice 10" machines, they just aren't market leaders.
>>
>>54065841
Not really, 11.6" laptops running Windows are still pretty popular and they're making more of them. Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and HP all make their own brand of 11.6" Windows 10 laptops.

those are cute and nice af

I'm going to order one or a few to distros and or keep Windows on them

they'll make cute Steam Chat machines, also good for porn and linux boxes

just bought one for 25 bucks on ebay, how badly did I fuck up?
>>
>>54071578
the other problem is that netbooks really suck at Linux. The old generations were bad because Intel never released any Linux driver for the GMA500 licensed from PowerVR. The new Asus Vivobooks and HP Streams have 32-bit EFI only and can't run 64 bit Linux properly for no good reason.

ok. thinkpad x1 hybrid. switch to android mode and it still gets about sixteen hours. that's on a three cell battery.

This. ASUS E Series, Acer Cloud and HP Stream come to mind.

The first eeePC's came with Linux (Xandros). The product was a hit so Microshit sent their Pajeets and BOOM the eeePC's started being sold with WinXP that obviously was too heavy for the hardware, making them a pain to use. A few gens later netbooks were dead.

THANK YOU BILL
