Not religious myself, but I can see how this would slightly help. If sin cannot be accessed, it cannot be committed. Restricting oneself sounds like the wrong choice but it can help some people.
It's like when you're trying to lose some weight and you don't have any unhealthy food at home or you cannot afford to just order pizzas. Building a wall between you and the temptation could make things slightly easier.
