I think it's a poor idea to spend a thousand dollars or more on a portable computer. That display sure is nice, though; I wish I had a resolution that high on my desktop.

Actually comparing to a MacBook pro.
On the Dell you get the same processor, same ram, 1tb HDD and 32GB SDD with a GTX 960.

"Muh build quiality", please.
It wasn't long ago MacBook Pros would drop out after 3 years.
The connections from the graphics chipset to the monitor ribbon would fry quite regularly.
Also I used mine for school and apparently transporting it everyday in my nice padded back pack caused the body to bow, so I had to take it apart to get to my CD drive.

Hardware aspects aside, OS X's ecosystem is amazing if you have more than one apple device.
Being able to send texts from my rMBP or iPad is awesome and Continuity can be really convenient at times. Facetime is like a native Skype. iCloud Drive integration on Apple devices is pretty smooth and allows me to shitpost on here with reaction images without taking up space on my devices. Airdrop and Airplay are neat. The 2015+ rMBP trackpad is orgasmic thanks to the drivers for it in OS X.

3rd party apps can do all of this on Windows and Android
once it's set up it's almost seamless, and for power users (an MBP target market) setup is easy
and that's not even touching what Linux could do

With third party apps it's close, just not as seamless and with potential driver issues, longer set up times and the likes.

It's nice not having to bother with 3rd party apps for the very basics and just to get them for productivity you need like Office or PS.

While it isn't 110% seamless, it just werks (memes aside). You can download anything from it to any of your devices and it's built into OS X to act exactly like the regular file browser, except anything you put in it is available on all your devices.

A good amount of 3rd party apps do a good job of handling the basics if not improving the basics. I'm sure those things work great but everybody uses 3rd party apps for everything anyway.

HP Spectre X360, and for less money it adds a multitouch screen with stylus support and a tablet mode. Build quality is basically identical (I went from an MBP to the Spectre, so I know firsthand) and the only difference in internal design is that HP didn't bother to make all of the components the same color or use fancy stickers.

Well, another anon mentioned all the continuity stuff already, it's way more convenient than AirDroid/Pushbullet.

Facetime/iMessage deserve extra mentioning, way easier to resources and more stable than Skype. The Notes app is nice if you got an iPhone since it doesn't force to store it all in the cloud. And even something as basic as functional native browser is nice.

All small things that add up.

I have to admit that 16:10 displays are really nice on laptops, 16:9 is kind of a stupid meme for anything other than movies and gaming.

Apple's trackpads are really fucking good and and always have been, too. The Spectre's comes really close, and I think the hardware itself is pretty much identical, but the software implementation blows. (It drives me crazy that you can't two-finger "right" click on the left half of the trackpad like you can on Mac.)

I probably would have bought another MBP myself if it weren't for certain windows-only pieces of software that were critical for the job I was in at the time. I actually really love the tablet mode on the Spectre, though, it's really convenient to be able to pick it up off my desk and walk around the shop with it in tablet mode. I used to work at an engineering firm, and it was awesome to go down to the floor with a CAD file open so we could compare it to the real thing, or prop it up on the wiring table with a diagram open, or even just to hand it to the boss when I needed him to take a look at something.

Guise. Guise?

There's a cool compromise. It's called a Mac Mini. Let's assume that you're in your country cabin and brought along your Ayy Lmao-towable laptop for som serious weekend gayming with your best buddy (no homo). And then you want to for just a little while see how it is to be smug. Just let the Mac Mini use the screen and keyboard of your /v/irgin rig.

Of course, it's not a whole computer in itself. But if you disregard the screen and the keyboard, you get a lot of more bang for the buck if you buy a Mini instead of a Pedobook.

Nice try, Tim Cook. If you're really serious about desktop publishing or writing, you use a black and white-scren. No, not change it to black and white-mode. An exclusively black and-white screen.

I'm using a Samsung S23B350 1920*1080 screen right now. And If I look really hard, I can see some pixles on the corner of the Firefox window. And that's only because the corner is rounded and I'm not using a wallpaper, only plain black.

So the visibility of pixles is pretty much a non-issue for me.

Please no. 16:9 is pretty damn horrible, especially on smaller screens. Although to be fair I prefer 12-13", where it's even more noticeable, with 15'6 it should be somehow bearable.

>10-12 hours on a charge
Not with the 4k version I take. And 10h sounds pretty damn good and better than in reviews. Do you lower the brightness to dumb levels or how?

>Precision is actually where a good clitmouse excels.
Sounds physically improbable but I didn't use one in ... about a decade. Let's assume it's as subjective as keyboard then.

Let's even ignore the 16:9ness, we're still left with a heavier laptop for almost the same price but with better GPU, so while it serves as an alternative, it also serves to disprove the MACBOOKS ARE SOOO OVERPRICED meme, and only comparable to the 15" Macbook. How about much cheaper alternatives for the 13" one?

Apple is well known for having overheating and display problems (problems with screen lamination and glue leaking out after a while). Just do a google search and youll find all you need to know.

Every brand has problems sometimes apple always sweeps problems under the rugand there have been plenty of petitions and lawsuits against apple to replace faulty prices.

>>54047662
>Please no. 16:9 is pretty damn horrible, especially on smaller screens.
Yeah, because the closer to square a rectangle is, the more area it will have for its diagonal. I gotta say though, my AspireOne's 12" 1366x768 is pretty usable, though small screens and *x768 resolutions are rather cramped.

>>54047662
>Not with the 4k version I take.
I don't know. I have a 1080p IPS panel in it that I got off AliExpress. I didn't have a real choice when I bought the laptop since I got it factory refurb off ebay for about half price. It's 14" and the pixel size is pretty close to 'retina' already, but still big enough to use at full resolution without pixel doubling.

>>54047662
>10h sounds pretty damn good and better than in reviews. Do you lower the brightness to dumb levels or how?
It's a T440p. Battery is removable, and mine came with the 9-cell extended life one. The battery life goes down some when I have a second HDD in the optical bay, but it does manage pretty much all-day battery life. It might also affect things that I disallow Javascript from 3rd party sources by default, which tends to cut CPU hogging while browsing.

>>54047662
>we're still left with a heavier laptop for almost the same price
Yeah it is heavier. However...
- Cooling is good enough that even with CPU and GPU at full, I don't get above the low 80s. No throttling, ever.
- Optical drive is easily removable after I removed a screw from inside, and hot-swappable with a HDD
- Battery is removable, so I can replace it or change out the cells when it finally bites the dust.

>14 hours on idle

>I have a 1080p IPS panel
Then the whole point is moot, anon. It's given that lower resolution options will be cheaper/last longer than screens with high resolution.
While 1080p is sufficient for 14", some people want to go beyond "good enough" to "great".

Also the pixel doubling with Retina isn't mandatory, you can use the screens native resolution or something lower to hit your personal sweet spot. I found 1920*1200 the best on muh 12" screen, for example.

>Battery is removable
A plus if you want to keep the laptop long enough till it degrades for sure, or if you're want to be a battery swapping neckbeard.

Being able to add more storage is always nice too obviously. And yeah, disallowing Javascript is a great way to get more time, although cripples a lot sites. You'd get day long browsing with a MPB without that.

> I don't get above the low 80s. No throttling, ever.
While the Macbook gets hotter, there is no throttling on OSX either. So better cooling doesn't offer actual benefits here.

>Idle is what it does most of the time when you're doing the usual activities: office, email, browsing, etc,.
Not at all. Idle is what it says, when you have the screen on and NOTHING happens. Even simple tasks can drain the CPU relatively fast since it has to crack up the clock from time to time. Sites like notebookcheck have idle and browsing in different categories for a reason.

>Xeon
Well, 2MB L3 cache and ECC support would be the main benefits. Nice to have I guess. Though performance wise it's pretty much identical with the old ass HASWELL from MBP.

64GB memory is still a meme, workstation or not. Even with couple VMs running, you'll have a hard time even using up 32GB, and will sooner run into CPU bottleneck.

>Photoshop on huge images, video rendering

writing css doesn't make you a "senior dev" regardless of how slow you do it for 8h/day for 5 years

sure, when all you're doing is using a text editor...

Thing is you name many different computers that are better in certain aspects. Macfags think that because one PC doesn't beat the macbook in every single aspect they can think of, even if the PC beats it in 9/10 use cases, the mac is better because of X cherry picked metric. It wins be default because its made by Apple.

Actually think about how you're going to use your laptop. There are more portable laptops than the macbook for less than 1/2 the price. There are more powerful latptops for less than 1/2 the price. There are laptops with removable batteries for days long mobile usage, there are laptops with much higher color accuracy for professional use. All fractions of the price of a macbook.

The macbook is just consumer-grade quality all around, but does nothing well for its price range. There are no PCs that imitate it because its pointless. Mindless brand sheep buy macs because they're made by Apple, not because of quality or performance. There is no point in any PC maker trying to make an overpriced vogue consumer laptop.

>$1200

Why do faggots spend so much money on laptops??? The only reason it makes sense to me if you work remotely
>>
>>54049101
I know it's crazy but have you considered that some people want a portable, powerful laptop with a great screen that lasts entire work day? Not buying 3 different ones.

>>54049113
>$1200
>much
Sorry to hear that, Pedro.

>>54049127
>Sorry to hear that, Pedro.
>he doesn't want to spend $1200 on a paperweight he must be poor!!!

You shills are terrible at this.
>>
>>54049113
That doesn't make sense either. If you work remotely you can put together an overpowered desktop for the money that will easily last you the next 10 years.
Maybe if you work remotely only from trains/airplanes...
>>
>>54049141
>nobody can name a comparable 13" laptop
>IT'S A PAPERWEIGHT
>>
>>54049153
I'm not even arguing against any of the points you made, faggot. If you're in college buy a laptop otherwise, it's a huge waste.
>>54049144
I'm just trying to think of a reason I would need one. My $500 Laptop is just gathering dust.
>>
>>54049127

Except the mac isn't powerful. Nor is it relativity portable with a built in battery. You have 6 hours about. That's it. The screen is high res, but not accurate enough to be suitable for professional use.

Its mediocre in every area for its price. Its like if you took the best aspects of 3 different $600 walmart PCs, put them together, with a better aesthetic design.
>>
>>54049100
yeah I kno nosql structures too, as well as time series and many others... whats your excuse?
>>
>>54049207
>I kno
we can tell
>>
>>54049171
see >>54049035

can confirm I get a full work day (8-10hours) on battery actually USING it, that's why I prefer the 13' than 15', but they are bot great for development
>>
>>54049215
> he has valid points but he did a typo so better complain on that

damn son, you way over the pathetic scale, 2/10 made me reply
>>
>>54049231

I was issued a 15'' rMBP for work, and never get ~5-6hr. The display says 9 hours, but the clock ticks down faster than real life.

>>54045603
>>54045697
Why pay for features you don't need?
>>
>>54049169
>having a portable computer is a huge waste
Only if you never leave your basement, Pedro.

>>54049171
>You have 6 hours about.
Negro what? It's easy 8h with normal use, more if you just watch a movie on a flight.

>Except the mac isn't powerful.
Compared to muh Alienware and similar huge shit. The 13" MBP is the fastest ultraportable.

>The screen is high res, but not accurate enough to be suitable for professional use.
Nor does it need to be, you buy an external monitor for that. It gives you a much better experience than low res trash from noticeable cheaper laptops.

>Its mediocre in every area for its price.
Interesting definition of mediocre. A more accurate term would be "upper class", given that the price is too, it fits perfectly.

>Its like if you took the best aspects of 3 different $600 walmart PCs
Name a $600 PC that has a high res screen. Name one that lasts longer than 8h. Name one that is slimmer.

Besides, it would still miss the point. Having 3 laptops is retarded when you can buy one.

>>54049248
Why bitching about them as it happens in every thread minimally related to macs? If you claim something is overpriced, then there should be another device that offers it all for much less.

To be fair, Windows laptops only regressed since that. At least they had 16:10 options back in the day. Now it's pure consumer trash even on "business" laptops.
>>
>>54049270
>The 13" MBP is the fastest ultraportable
False.
>>
>>54049270
>Nor does it need to be
confirmed shill
>>
>>54049309
What other uses 28W CPU? Surfacebook might quality but the hinge makes it too fat for an ultraportable I think.
>>
>>54049305

this. consumer PCs have gone to absolute shit. So you literally have to choice to buy cheap PC dog shit, or slightly upscale mac dog shit with a shiny logo.

either way, you get fucked.
>>
>>54049321
>but the hinge makes it too fat
Nor does it need to be slim!

anon, "consumer" anything was always shit

If it wants to qualify for ultrabook, it does. Though as I said, I am not sure if it really makes it too fat or if it's slim enough to qualify.

oh boy thats a new one, you basement creatures are one of a kind... anyone got the pajeet post with troll hand living in the basement as a polska slave?
>>
>>54045166
What is the point of it?

I mean, if you are the average applefag you don't have any need for the big display or decent hardware since all you are gonna use it for is facebook and photoshopping pictures of yourself to make your profile picture look less disgusting, maybe use it to write some essay for their liberal arts degree.

And if you are a techfag then you would much rather just get a desktop, and since you already have a desktop, you don't need a super expensive laptop, just one that's decent enough for portable use.
>>
>>54049127

It's quite hard for a product to do everything. Do you own an iPad by any chance? There are situations where a tablet or even a phone can do things that a laptop can't such as watching video on a couch without the extra weight.
>>
>>54049402
>thats a new one
confirmed newfag shill
>>
>>54049333
>qualify for ultrabook
the macbooks are not ultrabooks
>>
My work gave me a retina macbook pro. The thing is buggy as fuck, specifically the screen, weird scaling issues between it and monitors.

And yes, I've looked online and these issues are widespread. Its just a major deficiency of the product.
