I'm assuming she was going to work at Google HQ. In that area, $130k is enough to get you into a decent apartment. If you want to live in San Francisco (i.e. the only non-boring-as-fuck place in the region) then you'll barely be able to afford a studio, and more likely just a bedroom in a flat you rent with three or four others. If one person moves out and flakes on their rent, you could all be completely fucked in short order.
You likely won't ever be able to own a house, unless you commute an hour to an absolute ghetto. Even the ghettos are disappearing fast. When I left the area in 2009, hipsters were starting to flood into the decent parts of Oakland. It's only a matter of time before they take over East Oakland.
So yeah, America is rich. But don't be impressed by the salary. It's basically just enough to live comfortable as a young renter.

Since when did people sign NDAs over how much they are paid? I have never heard of this. Yeah, companies don't necessarily like you talking about it, since it has the potential to piss off your co-workers who will then demand to get paid as much as you are, but I've never heard of them outright forbidding it.
