Picked up one of these at a thrift store today for $60. It works and successfully boots to its desktop.

Never owned a Mac before. What should I do with it?
>>
Install Gentoo.
>>
update it to most recent release
test the RAM and HDD to make sure no errors from age
clean out the fans and interior
re-apply old thermal paste

Is it power PC or intel powered?

Mac OS doesn't work on anything standardized like an Intel CPU.

What all Mac owners do with their Macs.
>>
>>54030090

That's not bad, you can have some fun with that. For $60, you did well. That sucker is from 2005.

Apple officially supports 16GB but you can go up to 32GB DDR2.

Stick an SSD in there and upgrade the OS as far as possible. If nothing more you can make it a Plex server or something.
>>
>>54030177

To expand you can upgrade the GPU. 5770, 5870, 6850, 6870, 6970 all seem to have some success.

Here's how to push it to its absolute limit and get it up to current OS specs:

>>
>>54030090

Damn. You did good for $60.

>>54030177

What this anon said.

10.7.5 is the max OS that's officially supported, but apparently people have gotten Yosemite working on these.

That's really good. Idiots around here list them on Craigslist as "collectible" and want $500+ for them.

>>

>>54030230
Nice, might look into upgrading it then.
I could resell it online of course, but the shipping would be a hassle given how heavy it is. Really I only purchased it because I had never owned a Mac before.

Also the case is painful as shit to carry around, who though this was a good design then the edges cut into your hand?
>>
>>54030295

>Apple has been a generation behind in pretty much everything they do

Oh, bullshit. Look at when the Mac Pro Trashcan Edition came out.

The rest of what he says is typical autistic bullshit. "Hurr $200 for 8 gigs of RAM?!" yes, dipshit, you have to pay a premium for soldered memory.

Dumb, fat fucker.
>>
>>54030339

Just wanted to post that someone else had done it. he spend 30 fucking minutes bitching about apple
>>
>>54029999
>notice me simpie
>>
>>54030361

Yeah, I know, he just pissed me off with his fathead bullshit.

But yeah, if I found an old Mac Pro for $60, I'd put in an SSD and new CPU(s). Probably a better dev box than a Mac Mini for the same or less money.

OP here.

Also found an HD 7750 1GB, a copy of Marvel vs Street Fighter, and some sort of "Xtreme PC".

Overall not a bad day for thrift store finds.
>>
>>54029923
If the case is in good shape you can clean it up remove the dated components and sell it for like 100 bucks.

That case is considered the prettiest ever, there is a market for it if you are interest.
>>
>>54029923
Nice blog. Now fuck off.
>>
>>54030339
>you have to pay a premium for soldered memory.
>paying a premium for nuking possible upgrades and strong arming you into buying the latest offerings rather than upgrading.

pretty sure the trash can doesn't have soldered memory. it's user upgradeable. so you are paying hefty a premium for ddr3

It's a goddamn computer. Do what you want with it. Why are you asking us?
>>
>>54029923
You can use sfott to update to El capitan. Just make sure your gpu gets an upgrade. Any pc nvidia card will work but won't show a boot screen so consider picking up a gpu with apple efi installed
>>
>>54030607

Really, you can use any nvidia out of the box? By boot do you mean the loading screen? What's the process to flash a gpu with the apple efi?
>>
>>54030417
Jesus, what thrift store did you go to?

All the ones I go to always suck

There's a reason a major tech news site ran this as their banner for years.

My god, how much did the HD 7750 cost?
They are around $100 in my shitty country.

If i recall, AMD had some cards that are mac ready out of the box. most had a switch to swap between mac and windows/linux compatibility mode

>>
>>54030090
You can buy the fastest possible processors that fit that socket and change them out. I have the 2006 model and I did that, swapping the dual core for quad core for about $50. I got a way better graphics card for about $150. SSD, 32gb of memory. The thing can edit 1080 perfectly and works great. I have a newer laptop but i use this the most. $60 is a steal

Set of thrift stores in a hipster-ish area-
I've had some other great finds before like:
>A slim dual-core pc for $12.50
>Hundreds of dollars worth of Sega Saturn games +console for $30
>a high end gaming PC from 2008 for $25

Thrift stores are great for finding value.
>>
>>54030645
Touche, ni/g/ga.
>>
>>54030620
Pretty much all nvidia cards will work with the nvidia Web drivers. I believe the flashing methods change with each card but u can buy apple 7950s pre flashed and 780s too I believe. Yeh the Apple loading screen doesn't work so ur gonna have to use a supported apple efi gpu to perform the El capitan installation
>>
Why DO macfags have no personality other than circlejerking over their memebrand toys?

Legitimate question.
>>
>>54029923
Use the case as a sleeper gaming rig?
>>
>>54030090
Buy enough RAM to get you up to or over 8GB.
Install a GTX 960
Bootcamp Windows 7

Now you have a perfectly good and pretty modern PC that can do anything you want it to do.
