>The head of Mozilla's Firefox browser is looking to the future. And, for the moment at least, it seems to lie in rival Chrome.
>Senior VP Mark Mayo caused a storm by revealing that the Firefox team is working on a next-generation browser that will run on the same technology as Google's Chrome browser.
>The biggest surprise, however, was that the project, named Tofino, will not use Firefox's core technology – Gecko – but will instead plumb for Electron, which is built on the technology behind Google's Chrome browser, called Chromium.

Mozilla stahp!

Just another press-statement completely backfiring and exploding in their face.
They really, REALLY cannot do these things at all.

And now you know why Mozilla is going down the drain. Their internal communication is a carbon-copy of their external communication.

Just disable automatic updates and do it manually after checking out the release notes for every new version.

It's not like you're going to miss the shitstorm on /g/ the day it happens. Also, if you are using the current address bar (the awesome bar), I believe a new version is on its way and it's even shittier.

My ideal browser would be a Firefox fork that still uses Gecko for XUL (addon compat), but uses Blink for HTML.
>>
>>54017752
I don't think Linux versions auto update the same way, it's usually done through the package manager.
>>
>>54017945
You're absolutely right. That said, do people auto-update on Linux? I figure most users would at least like to see what updates are out there and to choose when to update.
>>
>>54017982
Well, most users run apt-get update && apt-get upgrade or pacman -Syu and just update everything that's available to update after having a quick glimpse of the applications updating.

So my original point is I might go ahead and blacklist Firefox updates from pacman.

It's all KDE's fault for choosing to license KHTML LGPL rather than full-blown GPL, you know right?

The Register is blatantly misrepresenting what "Tofino" is.

It's a series of UX experiments. Mozilla basically trapped a bunch of UX "devs" in a room for a few months and is forcing them to design a new interface. They're using electron for prototyping, it's easier to modify javascript on the fly.

Sounds good.

Chrome has the better backend
-multiple processes
-gpu supported features
-pages rendered correctly

Firefox has the superior frontend
-awesome bar is the biggest feature
-tabs and tab placement
-general ability to adjust the interface.

>>
>>54018412
Also do note that Mozilla is also working on a completely different project that makes Gecko compatible with Electron.

https://github.com/mozilla/positron

The fact that these experiments use Electron APIs does not necessarily mean they will be using Chromium itself as the backend.

I actually installed Chromium today, I'm not using it yet, but it's really only a matter of time now, or I use a firefox fork. It must be intentional, no-one can possibly fuck up such a good browser so bad without doing it on purpose. It's a shame to see FF go but hopefully in the future when this fad of SJW dies, real hard working people that actually care about the browser and not just social justice can work to make it good again, though by that point it's probably going to be impossible.

KHTML (Konqueror/KDE) -> WebKit (Safari/Apple) -> Blink (Chromium/Google) -> Everything else Chromium based

The problem that guy suggest is that IF KDE had made KHTML full GPL, Apple wouldn't had picked it up for WebKit and none of this would had happened.

I personally blame Mozilla for relying on Gecko for so long. It's no secret Gecko's codebase is a clusterfuck no one in this planet fully understands and a rewrite was long overdue. I remember circa 2006 when everyone was pointing this out and Mozilla did nothing because they were beating IE out of the competition. Shame they didn't think of their future.

It's an obscure browser, back when I tested it, plugins were still a thing and it's UA caused big sites to serve shitty versions of their pages -- Yes, you can the UA but you have to go through some trial and error.
I suppose with HTML5 displacing most plugins this has changed, but I haven't really tested it recently.
>>
Well, FORK Mozilla, then.
>>
>>54017556
Nope. I'm happy you're gone. Seeing what you're doing with your new browser, I can only imagine what damage you would have caused to Firefox.

Once they do this, why would anyone bother using FF over chrome?

Palemoon wins. And if someone prefers Chrome, they will just use it instead of the dime store knockoff.
>>
>>54023018

Maybe I was unclear. I meant to ask you about that "it renders pages in the most beautiful way I've ever seen" part.

I think I've used it sometimes (mostly because Firefox was not installed yet), but I tend to confuse it with Rekonq. One of them also worked as a file manager for a short time.

why do they stop making their own core? Gecko as Firefox, Presto as Opera...
the core, I think the main function of it is a rendering engine, is hard to maintain?

Who ever said that? Fuck's sake, they're even developing the Servo engine as a research project in order to improve Gecko!

READ THIS >>54018412 AND STOP THIS WHOLE "FIREFOX IS GOING BLINK" MADNESS
>>
>>54018412
And then they suddenly decide to release the prototype as the actual product as they found out using electron is far easier than maintaining an aging gecko or trying to create a massively parallel rendering engine like servo

Google Chrome team has revealed themselves to be dick sucking nigger lovers. Please, there must be a way to get rid of this shit. And Mozilla thinks this is eventually the way to go.
>>
>>54025980

What do you mean with "that shit"? The vocal search?

The biggest reason I hate Google for is their getting rid of the text reflow feature. A capability every browser had since the dawn of the web was suddenly removed in their push for "mobile-optimized" websites, and every other browser maker promptly followed suit (notable exception: the almighty Opera). That's truly an unpunished crime against accessibility
>>
>>54026092
I'm referring to the trending searches pushed upon you whenever you use the search bar in android, example in the screenshot above. There is no way to get rid of it. Seems to be a "punishment" for not enabling web history.
