We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those “alternatives” to free software.

If you want the features of photoshop on Linux so bad why don't you create them? Learn how to help contribute, that's the entire point of freeware. If you see a problem that needs solving, help out if you are able to. The fact that video editing isn't that great likely means the demand for it just isn't high enough. Look at Steam, they're trying to promote games on Linux and a lot of people are thankful for that. There's no company like Steam trying to promote advanced editing however, which leads me to believe it's not as big of a problem as detractors think.

Because I'm an end user and not a dev, and because Photoshop is the result of decades of development by a huge team. GIMP is the way it is because it's made by a small group of people working for free.

>>54012317
Actually, a huge percentage of Photoshop users need features GIMP lacks, since the majority of PS users are photographers. Native RAW support is absolutely critical, and GIMP requires that you convert RAWs in external software, which has nowhere near the level of conversion quality that ACR or Lightroom do. (Especially with Canon, Nikon, or Leica cameras, because those brands work directly with Adobe and provide them with technical data that provides for improved RAW profiles.)

Also, Content-Aware Fill is incredibly useful and works mind-blowingly well, and GIMP's version can't hold a candle to it.

iirc photoshop's circle tool doesn't "draw" a circle, it creates some vector layer mask masking, a black layer.

Because you don't really ever need to draw a circle in an image manipulation program. It's main purpose is manipulating fucking images.

You do realize that its the exact same fucking process in photoshop

How else do you create a circle?

The only difference is that, if you want a filled in circle, photoshop gives you a circle button. But like I said, it doesn't draw a circle, it makes a whole new layer, fills it in black and puts a vector mask over it in the shape of a circle. Useful if you are a graphic designer and need a circular mask quickly, but useless if you "just want to draw a circle"

Paint.net literally has the exact same menus, keyboard shortcuts, and with minimal window reorganizing, the same layout as Photoshop. It just doesnt have everything in the filters/render menus

Photoshop is literally the defacto image manip program, GIMP doesn't even remotely resemble it without using a shitty outdated fork. Something is wrong when a drawing program has a layout closer to the standard than a program that literally has image manipulation program in its name.

Gimps two major flaws are missing support for colorspaces and missing nondestructive editing through layerstyles, adjustment layers and the likes. Since nobody bothered to mention these, I'm pretty sure GIMP will suit most shitposters in this thread better than Photoshop anyway.

You don't draw ellipses in photoshop either, what you fags are arguing are paths and shapes and guess what, fully supported in Gimp.

More annoying than embarrassing IMO.
They will argue for hours that you don't *need* photoshop and that gimp does it all better for free. The really will go on for hours and hours belittling you until you cave in and try GIMP.

Then when you ask thm how do do X, Y and Z they have no fucking clue and tell you to read manuals or try recompiling your kernel as if that even makes any fucking sense.

When you corner them about GIMP being shit in what it can do and how much effort it takes to do simple shit they will say "Oh well GIMP and for IMAGES not DRAWING holy shit lrn2read moron" and when you try edit images they come out with shit like "ITS NOT FOR PICTURES AND PHOTOGRAHPS DUMBFUCK!!!"

What exactly is GIMP good for? Nobody can answer it, it's yet another GNU tool to waste time doing things the most complicated way possible so some overweight socially crippled weebwigger can feel smart for once in their sad pathetic lives.

You can't even edit text after rotation in gimp or, even fucking MS Word 95 can do it. Current Word even has better vector graphics editing support FFS.

But I don't need photoshop, gimp indeed does everything I need. I'm not a professional graphic designer so what. Gimp is not shit. It does what it says it does and does it well, unlike firefox for example. Gimp is good for doing whatever your friends asks you to do when he says can you shop this mate?

Yes but why can't Linux users seem to grasp that the world does not revolve around them? Other people have different needs.
I like using photoshop for speed and ease, why some rabbid freetard always has to come out from nowhere talking to me like I'm a dumb piece of shit for not using their their chosen software? Worse is when I do try it they have NO answers and ONLY excuses.

> It does what it says it does and does it well
Yeah gimp image manipulation... until you hit something gimp cant manipulate or do as efficiently and suddenly people start verbally abusing you for trying to edit images and making more excuses about how "gimp isn't meant for that".

I'm sorry but fucking freetards are so fucking annoying, it's sjw/vegan type behaviour with a lot of them they cannot fuck off and leave people alone in peace.

Because Adobe is fucking evil. Worse than Microsoft and Apple in a lot of ways. I don't generally care if people need to use proprietary software if they have to but the more people abandoning Adobe products the better.

I see. With wine, it works for me but the brush tool sometimes buggy

I know, which basically render the whole program useless unfortunately.
krita do the job fine, but it lacks in image manipulation so far the best way I found was to just use Oracle VirtualBox, with MicroXP windows to run CS6 portable version.

Wine can run it.
You can't "USE" it.
The brush is buggy, the text tool causes a crash.
Using adjustment layers create a hardware bug and you have to re-install it in order to make it work.

GIMP needs a new logo and fast. The current one with that dumb fox(?) is cringy deviant art tier. It seriously looks like one of those god awful body expansion furries that wear and turn into diapers. The weirdest kind of most embarrassing perversion that even bronies scoff at.

How to make it good:

That would bump the userbase by 50%

GIMP effectively can replace Photoshop, it takes a learning curve and configuration of the actual GUI to use but after that and using all the options I honestly just like GIMP more than Photoshop, the only thing stirring me away from using GIMP at first was because of the default UI, but then I learned you could actually make it all a single window and customize the ui to make it look like Photoshop

No one is forcing you to use an specific piece of software, if any a lot of people here is trying to convince people that gimp is shit by forcing their needs into everyone else, they're the rabbids ones.

>Worse is when I do try it they have NO answers and ONLY excuses.
Says the people who put their own victory conditions ignoring what other people is saying, if other people can work perfectly with gimp for free, without needing to pirate and without restrictions why this frustrates some people that much?

>people start verbally abusing you for
>muh feelings arguments
you're not providing any convincinf arguments except displaying frstration because people doesn't agree with you in a passive-agressive way.

>I'm sorry but fucking freetards are so fucking annoying
You say this and yet you ask for people to not abuse verbally on you

>it's sjw/vegan type behaviour with a lot of them they cannot fuck off and leave people alone in peace.

It's never been an art tool, you're thinking on something like Corel Painter.

Photoshop was designed for touching up photos (improving existing art?) and later for general image manipulation.
/g/ obviously has a lot of image macros, but general image editing/manipulation is good for ui development/webdev/desktop ricing/signal analysis(yes) and more.

The menus looks fine for me but the fonts in the gui looks funky, i don't know what kind of toolkit they're using.

I never bothered to try to fix that, if you can make all fonts look pretty post your method please.

Yes, the script says that (or AMD btw), i have a laptop with intel sandy bridge (3000 i think) graphics, i'll try later to see if it works.

The reason I started using GIMP was because paint was shit(no layering), and my intel p4 couldn't handle photoshop.

Now years later, with quad core I still look for minimalist software i can install anywhere and use.
