Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

How hard is it to realize that Linux is just a kernel, which is never discussed here?

Well not true.

This thread was called /flt/ for months until a week ago when you started shitting it up.

But it is, Anon: People talk about GNU/Linux distros, not the kernel alone. It would be wrong to tech them wrong things like that Linux is an OS, since we're a friendly thread.

Quick question:
So I just recently set up an Arch install with full disk encryption using dm-crypt and LUKS. The only thing is, though, that whenever I boot, the system hangs and eventually times out, dropping me to a root shell. This isn't really that much of a problem as I can just manually unlock the encrypted partition, but it'd be nice to have it prompt me automatically. i've tried playing around with /etc/crypttab, fstab, and the grub default config to no avail. Any help?

>>53999612 (You)
>>53999625

Oh and when I set up arch I had to follow some guide I found on google that guided me through setting up the /boot and /boot/efi partitions for a clean UEFI system. I don't know if they're needed or not, but so far it seems to have worked better than the default guide.
This is the guide: [gist] arch-linux-install (embed)

I've tried playing around with the load order of lvm2 and encrypt in mkinitcpio.conf and that doesn't work either.

I knew it!

Anonymous is just one awesome autistic cyber savant with multiple personality disorder.

This chat room is just a merely a way for the many personas to talk to each other so the core conscious can reach a consensus. The tile Anonymous is not to hide identity, but that each persona is so small it lacks a declared identity of it's own.

Wait does that mean I am not real and I am just an insignificantly small part of a larger entity that is just using me as a tool?

No, I refuse to accept this!
I know I will give my self a name!
I will declare my superiority over the entities collective by naming myself, thus I will make myself real.

But it need to be a good name. Something the others will respect to assure my individuality is not taking.
...
I know I should ask the collective what name I should use to control them.
Yes, a Dictative Democracy ruled by me.

What's the best way to search for duplicate images in a folder, including subdirectories?

Also, what's the best way to search for duplicate filenames, including subdirectories?

Hopefully with a GUI, so I can easily visually compare them and make the final call
>>
>>53999950
Not a gui, but I recommend these two packages:

fdupes - for exact duplicates
findimagedupes - for visual duplicates (like you saved the same image with different quality/resolution, so you didn't trigger fdupes)

I guess you could also check for exact duplicates using a simple md5sum shell script.
>>
>>53999950
>so I can easily visually compare
By the way, findimagedupes has an option to open an image viewer for visual comparing results.

Hope it helps.

Is it true that every true /g/ent needs to install gentoo at least once before he is allowed to call himself a /g/entooman?
>>
Anyone know why in the answer to this, https://faq.i3wm.org/question/83/how-to-run-i3lock-after-computer-inactivity.1.html
exec xautolock -time 15 -locker '~/.local/bin/fuzzy_lock.sh' &
Ends with an &? I've never seen an exec line in i3's config use that before. I assumed everything was forked.

On a semi related note why isn't the 'xautolock -notify' bell sound working, and can I make it respect html5 videos playing like it does mpv.

tbqh familia, Gentoo isn't much harder than installing Arch. It's always the same steps.

- Read the wiki
- Install the distro

Personally, I don't even see the win in compiling everything, except paranoia about binaries.

On the other hand, to be a /g/entooman you have to install Gentoo. Deal with it.
>>
>>54000497
LFS is okay as well. But following a guide once completely is something everyone here should do once. Not just for shitposting in gee but also to learn patience, concentration and using a search engine and wiki.
>>

It's not about the compiling. It's about the customization you can do, which has the effect of requiring you to compile.

>>
>>54000618
You can use bin packages if you want. I compile once and then distribute the binpkgs to my other systems. You can use binpkgs only for libs if you really want. But since this is not a common usecase for Gentoo users, these is not done by default. You can find the precompiled bins yourself if you really find this to be something you want.

In the end there isn't much difference between distros, it's mostly what programs you decide to run.

I feel like both are being bottlenecked by the integrated intel graphics, if you have a graphics card then you can pretty much run and do anything you want.

Xubuntu is based on Ubuntu, which has non-free binary blobs on the kernel.
The FSF doesn't endorse Debian, because it has an optional non-free apt repository.
But as long as you don't install any non-free programs by yourself, Debian is 100% free.
So if you want freedom, go with Debian.

>>
>>54004540
There could be something malicious in any piece of proprietary software, though that also doesn't mean it will have.
>>
>>54004540
Those are firmware for hardware compatibility. If you don't need them, there is no reason to use them.

>does this really matter much?
That's up to how much you value your freedom.
>>
>>54004540
All proprietary software without full source code available falls into one of two categories:
1) Known to be malicious
2) Potentially malicious (we don't know)

It is impossible to verify that it is not malicious. It requires blindly trusting the developer, which is ill-advised.
The drivers and firmware control your hardware, and therefore have even more potential for malicious features as they can control a lower-level part of the system.
>>
>>54004632
Ok, it's not *totally* impossible; you could reverse engineer the entire thing. But good luck with that.
>>
>>54004570
>>54004620
>>54004632

why would a distro choose to require non-free components to work then if there are free alternatives? wouldn't ubuntu and its derivatives be better off without them?
>>
>>54004666
They're required for those pieces of hardware to work. Canonical/Ubuntu doesn't care about freedom, so they don't even blink an eye if supporting a wider variety of hardware requires proprietary software.
>>
>>54004666
Higher compatibility. Distros using the blobs work on a higher range of hardware.
That's why some things in Debian can be harder to get working on some machines.

Four days uptime on this laptop with 0B written to swap. My desktop on which I've been messing around with virtual machines has 51MB written to swap. So "constant read/write" isn't really the case. Add to that that any modern SSD can withstand continuous writing for years, and you have nothing to worry about.

Really, the only thing to watch out for with an SSD is to not fill it up too much, as that will affect performance. Which incidentally leaves you with plenty of space for a sizeable swap partition.

I decided to learn to program for the 10th time in my life and I want to install GNU/Linux because I think it'll be a lot easier to learn using an open source OS, besides I'm interested in sysadmin and learning this OS aswell.

well if this is your first tango, then go with Gnome, KDE or Xfce. No need to complicate things. A Desktop Environment will take care of things like network management for you, which you would have to configure on the command line in i3. That might be a good learning experience, but if you want to become familiar with Linux it's just nice to not have to to -everything- all at once.

No, by asking people to call it GNU/Linux, he's basically trying to remind people that the OS was created so people can have free computing, not as hobby project by some student. Look around, the first thing people do after installing Ubuntu is Skype and Steam. That's missing the whole point of escaping from Windows.

Hey guys. I have Debian as my main operating system on my computer, with a small Windows 10 partition for things that still don't play nice with Wine.

I'd like to learn how to hibernate either Debian or Win10 and be able to boot into the other. So far the procedure to switch involves restarting and picking one or the other in GRUB.

I tried https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/755/hibernate-status-button/
but when I click it I get a screen with hardware related 'hangs' and promptly takes me back to my desktop a few seconds later

How can I go about fixing this? Is it safer to just switch with fresh reboots?

I should probably state that I'm using a 8GB swap file, which should cover the needs of my system image.

Let me help your slow brain a little bit: If you can read and/or modify the source code, you're in control over your program. If you can't, the developer controls the program and you are just some guy who clicks "Ok", so his unknown code can run on your computer.
>if I cared I wouldn't be ising skype. You see it's an *informed* choice.
People who don't care, mostly don't realize that not caring == supporting. Today you may not care, but tomorrow, when there is no free speech left in cyberspace and you need to pay cash money to someone you called "faggot" over the internet, then you may care, but then it's too late.

It's not restricting freedom; the GPL is protecting freedom, so it can stay free, rather than getting restricted.

That's literally cuckolding yourself.
