KDE is the best Desktop environment
1. Written in Qt. Unity and Firefox is moving to Qt because they understood gtk is a pile of trash after all these years.
2. Has the absolute best and full featured file manager in *nix (Resizable icon view in file picker dialog, embedded terminal in file manager, built in addon service and the list goes on)
3. KWin is flexible. You can set different rules for each windows individually
4. KDE is complete. Has everything you need, has own torrent cilent, IDE, display manager, password encryption service, video editor, light games, terminal emulator, CAD tools, media player, browser, email manager, WINE manager, disk utility, download manager etc . No other DE (apart from inferior GNOME has that)
5. KDE is under active development, unlike GNOME. Which is why KDE has seen rapid changes and is more evolved.
6. While GNOME has been pioneering the Wayland development, KDE is one of the first DEs that support wayland. (Thanks GNOME/redhat for making systemd a dep for a display server)
7. Stability has been a known issue, but this is only because plasma 5 was a bleeding edge tech from 5.1 - 5.5 version. 5. 6 is as stable as 4 ever was. It is only logical to assume that plasma will only get more stable.
6. Consistent, professional and customizable UI. The default breeze dark theme is by far the most non-childish and professional theme any DE ever got
Meanwhile GNOME users cry over something as simple as a proper thumbnail view over decades but the ignorant indian devs wont listen.

I'm kinda sick of gnome breaking shit every update (themes and extensions). Is kde any different? i think i might try it for a few days...
Also, are there any good resources on customizing the plasma desktop?

The default theme and extensions are good enough so I rarely see any KDE user installing a third party theme or extension

Im going to be upgrading to 16.04 soon but im not sure what DE i will use.
Im on mint 14.04 cinnamon now but im pretty sick of the lack of good themes for it, Only thing i really don't like about kde is the Kecosystem, Most programs have to be compiled to support it otherwise they look like shit so you have to use the Kapps that come with it and a lot of them suck ass.
Gnome may have better themes but i don't like the half assed Mac rip off look.
And then there is just plain ubuntu unity that is slowly being assimilated by gnome anyway.
I used KDE 4 for several months. Terrible user experience. I can only hope that KDE 5 is better, but I don't feel motivated to put myself through the same thing again in order to give a fair assessment.

Completely untrue. Moreover Qt != KDE. Ubuntu apps are not going to be designed to fit into KDE, just like GNOME apps.

Do you have any actual numbers here? The last six-month GNOME cycle had almost 30,000 changes. GNOME has more paid developers than KDE, and as always had as far as I can remember.

Wayland isn't a display server, and the Wayland protocol doesn't depend on systemd.

Well, shit. I was firmly on Cinnamon's side, but I decided to try KDE because of this thread. It's a bit bloated in that it tries to be literally everything, but it's still damn nice. It took very little tweaking to get it where I want it.

I prefer MATE over everything, but If I had to choose from Gnome 3 and KDE I would pick Gnome. Much more polished, stable and lower on resources.
