So now that Windows 10 can run nearly every Linux app flawlessly (even graphical ones), what's the point of switching?
>>
There isn't.
>>
The same as before, the kernel.
>>

Linux isn't a botnet like windows
>>
>>53976277
Linux can run Windows flawless (KVM, PCI passthrough) since a while ago. You can even de-botnet it.
>>
It depends on your use case. I'll admit, this is far better than cygwin or the alternatives, and fantastic if you need to dual-boot to access work-related stuff. It's really starting to boil down to where you're comfortable.

Realistically, if you're using linux at work or doing sysadmin work, you should be running some sort of linux distro at home.

What is kde. Linux uses more resources than a 64-bit windows 10 system.

Neither on windows now.

There will always be a EULA, it's legally required. Linux just put it on their website.

You dumb nigger, the original complaint was bitching about OP saying 'Linux apps', which is valid terminology.

Yes, you are correct, those three things are not exactly the same.

No one was saying they were synonyms until you came along. However, you can use them interchangeably in some contexts.
>Run the GIMP executable
>Run the GIMP application

Both of these sentences mean the same thing in this context, given that GIMP is compiled locally with an executable file available.

1. If you want to be completely open source for one. Not how I think, but there are people out there who value that very highly
2. Its free
3. If you want an extremely lightweight operating system that can run in a ram disk.
4. If you have more than 2 CPU sockets on your motherboard.
5. If you have a non x86 or AMD64 processor.
6. If you want complete customizability of your OS.
7. No "botnet" on Linux
8. Almost no viruses on the desktop platform

There are plenty of reasons to still use Linux. I use both Linux and windows, because both are great operating systems for what I do with them. Having bash on windows makes my life 2x easier as well. Stop riding Microsoft's dick. And for the Linux shills, stop riding Stallman and Torvalds dick. Both have there uses.

Apps has been used to describe a category of warez applications for download since the early 90s, probably even sooner. FTP was standardized in 85. Apps directories started popping up soon after. Keep in mind warez was distributed for years before Napster was even created.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_file_sharing

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_software

Why people think apps can only exist on phones when the term has been used for decades in software is pretty comical. Just easily points out the underagers who thinks Steve Jobs invented a word.

I was obviously exaggerating when I was talking about GPU intensive programs. Remember I use both OSes. Most people don't want to switch to Linux over windows because they don't want to relearn there entire computer. Windows has ease of use, tons of programs, .exe files (ease of use again) and games. There are reasons to use windows over Linux if you are the average user. I use Linux (arch specifically) on my T420, and windows on my desktop.

Can anyone using the insider preview tell me if you can use sudo?
If it does, does it only work for ubuntu applications or does it work for windows in general?
I've always found the lack of a simple command to get super user privileges very annoying on windows, specially when you are using old batch files.

would you rather have your own government spy on you or a next door neighbor looking through your window?
either way, it's the same thing.

Can I run i3 with Windows now because of this?
>>
>>53981580
Nope, you can run KDE software, not KWin (properly) or replace Explorer with Dolphin
>>
>>53976277

yesterday I tried this out on a friends pc

tried a few commands:

> $ screen
> // some error about not being able to find a library
> $ dig A google
> // network stack error'd out
> $ ping google.com
> // same network stack error

Could have been something about how he had his firewall configured. Still kek.

I don't understand these threads. Why do you keep asking me about switching to windows? Linux already does everything I want.

what I'm saying is I don't give a flying fuck if anyone spies on me
I shit with the door open with people home
I walk around my room naked after a shower if I'm looking for clothes, sometimes with the blinds open
I use both proprietary and free software, whichever is the best for my use

I don't give a fuck who looks, why they're looking, or what they're looking for
>>
>>53995736
even if they steal your identity, use your credit/debit card/cash without permission, steal your SSN, leak your info, or blackmail you?
>>
>>53995758
>steal money
I have insurance, and I don't leave my fucking financial information lying around
>blackmail you
oh no, because I really care if people see some of my secrets
>>
>>53995865
might as well share your full name, street address, and IP address too since you seem to not give a shit about your privacy

Nobody switches to Linux because of software support

Because it's good non free software. GIMP on the other hand is shitty free software.

What you're referring to as Windows 10 is in fact GNU + NT. Please give equal mention.

>>Lightwheight compared to windows and more responsive.

>No need to accept microsoft's EULA
I'll give you this, but the alternative is having to use Linux
>>
Well Op your question is too general to answer, but i'lll try my best.

reasons I don't like windows that much

1.- From a clean install is bloated with programs I don't like in fact, I don't like even those programs that are a part of the OS.

2.- ntfs

3.- insta-Botnet

4.- forced updates

5.- the way updates work in general on windows

6.- Microsoft sucks

7.- Can't really customize

8.- gets slower with time

9.- defragmentation

10.- font rendering

11.- uninstalling programs

12.- constantly making huge ans scary changes on the already buggy and unstable operative system

13.- I have a macbook pro 13" mid 2012

14.- Networking tools feel like shit in windows

15.- can't read output directly from my hardware devices

16.- doesn't respects any freedom

17.- forces you to accept a EULA that makes you a prositute in theory

18.- Can't run a live usb

19.- security is ridiculous

20.- haven't even patched sticky keys bug

>Reason num 20 should be sufficient for most of us here in /g/

21.- worst user base on planet

I could continue but I got bored c ya
