why would i be excited about a kindle? it's so specially focused on a single use that it's hard to imagine someone who owns a recently released kindle planning on *upgrading* like... ever.
and amazon tried branching out and the fire tablets are generally junk.

I used to have a 3rd gen kindle, impressive battery life but shit for pdf's. I'll would buy a decent pdf or epub reader but still prefer old school books. Besides, ebooks are still over priced and can't sell them on ebsy so no real incentive to stick with a kindle.

I used to think people wanted e-readers because they wanted to read books outside in plain daylight, but then the kindle paperwhite came out and suddenly, everyone NEEDED that backlit display to read indoors.

this was indeed pretty stupid but to be fair, they aren't backlit but kinda lit from the side or something like that. backlit displays like lcd's cause eyestrain for a lot of people since the light goes straight from the source to your eyes instead of being reflected off a surface while e-ink displays are exactly the same as reading paper.
anyways, reading a well lit screen while the surrounding is dark can cause eyestrain too which is why ebookfags who demanded the build in light are morons.

Nothing lasts forever, especially with consumer devices and planned obsolescence. And it's always the best course of action to minimize wearing the internal memory, whether an ebook-reader or some smartdoohickey.
Last yet not least, the internal memories are absurdly small, even in the latest devices. Nothing more than a gimmick at best.
