Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

cd drives are very useful, they let you install your os from a disk which is the simplest way along with letting you have the option of using physical disks, I have 5 disc drives in my pc to listen to music cds without having to change them often, they are cheap as dirt nowadays after all.
>>
Not at all useless.

>Movie DVDs
Streaming is an alternative.

>Music CDs
Streaming is an alternative.

>Operating system installs
USB Flash Drive based OS installation is an alternative.

>Driver Installation CDs
USB Flash Drive containing the driver files is an alternative.

>Games
Steam / Saving to HDD is an alternative.

Point is, life is manageable without an optical drive. You don't NEED one but they do have their uses. If you personally do not use it, then feel free to sell it or give it to someone.

Personally I find my optical drive necessary since I don't have enough flash drives to dick around with and it's easier IMO to burn bootable programs to a CD and sharpie the name on the CDs.

In the case of laptops, I strongly believe it's worth spending the money (if you have it) to replace the optical drive with a 2.5" SSD/HDD hotswap bay and getting an external optical drive. In a desktop space is not usually a concern and you can add hard drives without removing the optical drive though so in those I always keep one active.

what do you faggots use to install operating systems?
I like cds because they cant be rewritten, I know its a clean install.
>>
>>53961675
USB.
You can't really trust any media that hasn't been in your possession the entire time. If you've lost track of your USB drive for some time and you're worried about whether it's clean or not, you're either facing adversaries that can replace your CD-R with a tampered version *or* you're being paranoid.
>>
>>53961675
USB Flash Drive / External HDD
CDs are easier IMO but people do actually do this.
>>
>>53959767
I'm not even sure if my DVD reader still reads anything. Didn't use it in 3+ years.
>>
>>53959767
Anything is CD bootable, any grandma has a drive, decent cheap option for static, long term archival storage, best way to get a lot of shit on an older system, physical albums/movies you truly enjoy are nice to have.

All depends on your use case.
>>
>>53960373
flash memory and cloud based memory is too expensive to pass around stock media inter office and from customer to client. i still use a dvd drive daily. so it's not manageable or profitable for me not to have one.

Still useful for sending large amounts of data one-way (i.e. can't rely on getting the flash drive/microSD back).

I use them to send little packets of pirated roms, emulators, music to less savvy users (friends and little cousins) who aren't as good at the internet.

Flash drives would work, but the cheapest ones are still like $4 for 8GB, which makes me stingy about sending them out and either accepting the loss or hounding them to send it back.

At $0.20 a pop I don't really care, so it's easy to just burn a disk and mail a letter any time I get something cool I want to share
>>
>ITT retards falling for a shit tier bait

>>53961945
What does you external network speed has to do with your internal server? Also, at those speeds caching proxy would be useful.
>>53961976
I explicitly install my OS from PXE with VNC. The boot images load their modified installer scripts that sends an email to my internal mail server with the output of ip a or ipconfig /all. It's really comfy, the only problem being I have to add drivers from time to time, but on the other hand I don't have to after the install finishes.

You know if you use one of these with a modified read head, you can use it to install WIndows operating systems to your PC.

I did that too, put SSD in main HDD slot and HDD in the CD drive (since my CD drive was only SATA II vs SATA III main). Best investment ever, seriously. Also buy a simple sata-to-usb cable in case you ever need a CD (you should have one anyway)

also i don't know why your panel looks a little off for your laptop, but i just unclipped the CD drive one and it went on perfectly to my bay

Depends on your uses, I use mine once a week. In all reality it's a <$20 purchase if you don't have one and you more than likely have a 5.25" bay anyway, there's really no reason not to have one unless you've got something like this going

>Videos are nice on DVD
>nice
Not really, Anon.
I know you said "IMO" and all, but let's be serious here. Screw that opinion. The compression, bitrate, and color is ok but if you educate yourself more you'll really learn to hate DVDs. Opinions aside it's borderline idiotic how they are handled from a technical standpoint.

Why?
Interlacing and anamorphic resolutions mostly.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video#Video_data
>Interlacing
Deinterlacing helps here but nothing beats a true progressive frame. Even if each progressive frame is only half the resolution
>Anamorphic res
It's just a whole-lotta-fuckitallup wherever any fine details are. Think hair, small words on letters or papers, etc.

The whole shits a goddam mess. At best DVDs are just "ok". They're definitely not "nice". People claim DVD resolution is "480p" but that's so far from the truth it is actually quite sad.

If you take a modern film that's out on DVD and Bluray (one that's not a remaster) and scale the Bluray down to 360p then re-compress it with one-fifth of the DVD bitrate, it'll look better than the raw DVD. That shouldn't be possible but it is. They're just that bad.
>>

>Streaming is an alternative.

Except when you want to install a program / watch a movie / listen to music that has only ever been released in physical media and was never put online in any streaming format. No, not even on YouTube and not even on What CD.

Your only choice then is to pop the cd in the drive.
