The last time I got a virus was in the early 2000s when XP was a worm sponge.
I haven't had a virus, malware or anything like that since but I still kept using various always on AV solutions until 2012. Then I only did occasional scans with Malwarebytes until 2014 when I finally realized these things are completely pointless nowadays. Despite browsing porn sites and pirating like a motherfucker my PC has not had a malware that I could notice. No weird processes, resource usage or connections, absolutely nothing.
If I don't fully trust a file I submit it to virustotal before running it or do it in a VM. You can really get by on just common sense alone since the XP service packs.
