Who's hyped for the retro Thinkpad?

http://blog.lenovo.com/en/blog/retro-thinkpad-time-machine
>>
still no new news

>inb4 cancelled
>>
>>53934547
Id be fucking pissed

I've heard rumors about a Q4 2016 release or a Q1 2017 release

We'll see. I'd buy one on launch desu
>>
>>53934495
if it actually ends up having those dumb colored letters on the logo, no one.
>>
Looks thin as fuck. Let me guess: just one USB C port?
>>
>>53934598
It's a business laptop for autists, not a Facebook machine for Sarah.
>>
>>53934582
yes I need it to be all monochrome so I look cool when I type commands on my thinkpad like the guy in the matrix
>>
>>53934495
not really
it seems styled after a T400-series more than anything else, which isn't really "retro" at all. I'd like if they made a little fat one like the really early models, though that's obviously fantasy.

i mean if it sells well it'll probably be my de-facto choice for a new machine in 2025, but it doesn't look that impressive.

I'm not a big fan of the RGB logo, but it might grow on me. Going more "retro" they could've taken the IBM Thinkpad styled logo and RGB'd "Le-no-vo" leaving ThinkPad in white.
>>
>16:10 aspect ratio screen
It might become not useless trash but that thinklight shit? Come on, this is 2016.
>>
>16:10
I'd be all over that thing if they actually release it.
>>
it cant replace my lenovo gayming laptop desu senpai.
>>
>>53934495

Cool! I'll buy one 3 years after its release for 200 bucks.
>>
>25 June 2015
>>
>>53934667
a feature you don't need to use so who cares?

You don't ever use your dick but you don't complain about having one either
>>
>>53934741
It takes time to develop these things

I hope they don't drop this
>>
>>53934755
For one because it adds additional cost, but besides that, it seems they are skipping on LEDs for the keyboard.
>>
>>53934495
I hope they make a version with Linux as the default OS
>>
>>53934828
Adding those little lights will add less to the price than a fraction of the sales tax

It's nothing in the grand scheme of things
>>
>>>53934845
Worthless unless it comes with libreboot too
>>
>>53934828
thinkpad doesn't have a backlit keyboard. Besides, backlit keyboards are gay and cost even more money like what the fuck m8?

How about you just learn to touch type????? This entire shitpost was made without looking at the keyboard.
>>
>>53934730
This
>>
>>53934862
yeah something tells me they aren't catering to the basement dwelling NEETS since they aren't going to be the ones who buy this bad boy upon release. You idiots will have to wait 6 years to buy them used before you start praising this model thinkpad
>>
>>53934864
>thinkpad doesn't have a backlit keyboard
That's like my fucking point, negro. Instead of having an useful feature, they add useless gimmicky lights.
>>
>>53934900
Then don't turn them on....
>>
>>53934900
it's a throwback to the older models doofus. No thinkpad has a backlit keyboard. If you want a backlit keyboard so badly go get a macbook.

also if anything it's the backlit keyboards that are gimmicks. Also the backlit keyboard isn't useful to me or other professional typers who can shitpost with 100% accuracy.
>>
>>53934939
A throwback is supposed to take an old design but improve parts of it. The gimmick light comes from the time, when backlit keyboards were too expensive. Now they waste money on that instead of making a backlit keyboard like every laptop that costs more than few hundred bucks.

Should they include a diskette reader for maximum throwback feelz?
>>
>>53934993
then don't fucking buy this laptop if it doesn't have a feature that you so desperately need

not even the new thinkpads have backlit keyboards.

>Should they include a diskette reader for maximum throwback feelz?
I actually wouldn't mind if it still had VGA out and a CD drive since those are two things I actually use a lot
>>
>>53935027
My modern Thinkpad has both

>>53934652
That's just a concept, they did a series of surveys to see what people wanted

http://blog.lenovo.com/tag/retro+thinkpad
>>
>>53934495
>that shitty logo
>probably won't be 4:3/5:4

>>
>>53935136
>>53935104
It looks good imo
>>
>>53934647
if you only buy what's "good enough" then why the fuck would you buy a new ThinkPad at all? why do people get so defensive at the idea that maybe a company should put more effort into making a good product instead of just lazily throwing a bunch of parts in a box and appealing to the lowest bidder?
>>
It's a day one purchase for me if it ever materialises.
I just wish they would do a model without a trackpad.
>>
>>53935172
the guy is only talking about the colored letters on the thinkpad logo and did not mention the hardware at all. So what the fuck are you on about mate?
>>
>>53934862
That's intels call not lenovos.
It would sell if they shipped with processors that old, because it would defeat the point.

>>53935172
No one was making that argument though

The original comment was in response to someone not liking the logo, not the actual parts of the machine
>>
What's so good about the thinkpad that justifies its price?
>>
>>53935260
Increases dong size by 36%
>>
>>53935214
>>53935222
where do you think I was discussing the hardware? I was calling out the reply that was basically "who cares about that as long as it has muh specs"
>>
>>53935260
Protects your virginity better than anime.
>>
>>53935260
Battery life isn't bad. Machine is actually well built for actual work and not just being a hipster douche. I personally like the keyboard, to be honest. Parts are easily replaced (not completely trying to cut you off like Apple). Some models come with a built in roll-cage so if you drop it and crack the casing, you have a good chance of not damaging the inner parts.

If you want more technical aspects, you'll have to ask others. I've heard they're great for coders and people doing a lot of data processing work.
>>
>>53935399
So, they are a work laptop for doing work things? Sounds similar to a Macbook, but cheaper and not on Macintosh
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lqAa_eD84A

its going to be a few years but it could be great. Davis hill could save the thinkpad
>>
>>53935424
But Macbook actually looks good, you can't have a good looking, slick laptop as a h4ck3r
>>
>>53935399
I don't really find ThinkPads that much easier to work on than any other business laptop, Tbh.

However, they're so common and cheap that it's definitely easier to source parts for them. And on the older pre-Lenovo models their hardware in the context of their release is peerless in many aspects. I love my bricks.
>>
>>53935450
MacBooks look like shit
>>
Is the keyboard non-chiclet or did they just make it look like one?
>>
>>53935444
He talks about the retro thinkpad at 13:30
>>
>>53935450
>macbook
>looking good
Maybe seven fucking years ago when they last overhauled the design. Apple is so complacent with macs it's not even funny, and now they just look like any other shitbook with a different logo on the back.

Not to mention that ugly as fuck bezel design, who approved that garbage?
>>
>>53935450
thinkpads look better than macbooks though.
>>
>>53934828
Let me guess: you have never actually used thinklight, and by extension any business class laptop. That's fine, stick to your alienwares.
>>
>>53935702
This board is full of 17 year old gaymers
>>
>>53934495
>>Who's hyped for the retro Thinkpad?

>having any faith in chinknovo
No
Its going to be a compromise that nobody likes.
Its going to cost a fucking fortune because they are going to do small runs of the screens, and because the business class who wants it can spend the money on it.

None of the /g/ users who buy them off lease, or bought them new at ~500$ with the gold discount and DOS operating systems and stripped specs are going to drop 1800-2000$ on it.
>>
>>53934828
You fucking retard
The reason for the thinklight instead of backlit keys pretty much need to be Chiclets to be effective.
It would be luckluster as shit on the original keys.

Also what 12 year old needs backlit keys?
>>
>>53935752
>Also what 12 year old needs backlit keys?
the kind that have been shitposting for 6+ years that STILL haven't learned to touch type
>>
>>53935136
that image is terrifying
>>
Considering getting this as my laptop for some mobile work in engineering, going to need some graphics though.

Otherwise I'll just have a Dell.
>>
>>53934730
This is a niche product that only Thinkpad loyalists will have any interest in buying. There aren't going to be a lot of people selling it used.
>>
>>53936818
>This is a niche product that only Thinkpad loyalists will have any interest in buying.
Not this loyalist. I'm so depressed by Lenovo's current direction, I'm learning how to solder CPUs to keep the vintage thinkpad I already have going....
>>
>>53934495
Fuck I hope they still do it. I can get my work to get me one
>>
>>53934495
take off the track pad and make it touch screen and leave the nipple and ill have 1.
>>
>>53934582
>supposed to resemble the old version with colored letters
>"hurr durr I hope it doesn't have colored letters"
How do retards like you know how to use the Internet?
>>
>>53935552
>now they just look like any other shitbook with a different logo on the back.
Because they popularized the design and every shitbook designer ripped them off.
>>
>>53938225
CPUs go with chipsets. Instead, try mounting a more modern Thinkpad or other laptop mobo in an old Thinkpad shell, keeping the keyboard, trackpad and trackpoint. You'll probably have to upgrade the screen though since most old stuff is LVDS while most new stuff is eDP.
>>
>>53934582
This.

>>53940216
It only looks good with the word IBM. Too late for that now but they can always unfuck all the fuckups theyve done over the years, starting with the fucking keyboard.
>>
>>53935725
I resent that.

>>53935424
I wouldn't say that. Macs are good if you're into design and need to make sure you have a certain image for your company. You know that image. That "I'm so hip yet so professional" look. Bit of bullshit if you ask me.
Thinkpads are designed to take years of constant travel and use/abuse. This video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOEIAHnzM7g
Even after running over the thing with a heavy-ass truck, they just took the hard-drive out, popped it in another Thinkpad of the same model, and all data is safe. That's how these things are built. Show me a mac that will do that.

>>53935472
I will refer you to my text above.
The newest of models of Thinkpads will run you the same as a macbook. Only difference is, is your thinkpad can get hit by a car and still work.

>>53935450
Please go to >>/fa/ if you're going to constantly be concerned with how it looks.

>>53940216
Actually you can thank Apple and their "innovative designs" that allow any retard to access the internet with ease.
>>
>>53940628
Can you really do that, just jam a new mobo in an old chassis?
>>
The only problem, and literally only problem, that I have with the thinkpad design is the lack of a number keyboard. If they added that it would be goat.
>>
>>53940628
>>53940723
If you can jam the parts from a laptop with a busted case into a pizza box, why the fuck not?

Other observations, thoughts and caveats:
- I *think* the keyboard/trackpoint should work. You'd need to make sure to get a donor laptop that uses the same protocol to talk to it -- SMBUS vs. PS/2 vs. USB. Ribbon cable rewiring may be required but should be possible with a ribbon jack, a ribbon end, tiny wires and solder.
- Differences in the keyboard layout may require some software tweaking to make things work right, and the keyboard may behave strangely in BIOS.
- Shape of the mobo and placement of the CPU and/or cooler will probably be the biggest deciding factor. You can judge a lot of this by looking at pictures of a laptop, optical drive and vent placement, etc.
- Connectors that don't line up perfectly can be desoldered and put on a wire, like good laptops do with their power jacks.
- The Ultrabay isn't going to retain its full functionality, but you should still be able to pull off hot swappable optical and HDD -- on Windows, Intel Matrix Storage chipset drivers have a registry setting to force a drive it thinks is internal to be removable.
- You may well need to use the power adapter from the new laptop. If it's more than 1-2 volts different from or significantly more amps than your Thinkpad one, either hack the new laptop's jack into the case or splice the Thinkpad adapter's plug onto the new adapter. Otherwise stick with the old adapter and hack the Thinkpad's charger socket onto the new mobo.
- Things like power button and indicator LEDs may be significantly different and result in some unused or changed-meaning LED spots or require some tedious wiring.

Try something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-Notebook-Keypad-Calculator-19-Key/dp/B000LSVAV4
It's a numpad, USB hub and calculator. If the calculator mode works like the one I have, it lets you do calculations like any pocket calculator, then press a button that makes it type the result into the computer.

Thats odd, the page here:
https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/pd001301

"Imbedded numeric keypad and integrated UltraNav dual-pointing system, featuring TrackPoint and customized touch pad for the ultimate in pointing flexibility."

Could it be a local version?

BTW, if you were wondering, it doesn't require any special drivers. It just shows up as a normal USB keyboard.

It isn't rainbow. It's alternating red, green and blue. Like the subpixel cells in a color LCD. They colored it like that when they introduced models with color displays early on.

16:10 mustard rice, it's approximately the golden ratio, about equal to 2 sheets of paper side by side, and being in between 16:9 and 4:3 makes it suitable for watching content in either

What's the matter with thinklight? It doesn't get in the way of viewing the screen, and doesn't bleed around the keys and shine up into your eyes like all keyboard backlights. It also illuminates anything else you move over your laptop keyboard, like if you want to check a piece of paper.

PR stunt with no actual product
Calling it now

If Gookovo cared about the brand they have been shitting on since acquisition they would have listened to their community long ago

I have my doubts that they are going to change their manufacturing process and source actually good components since that costs a lot of money. Even if it comes out it will be stupidly expensive since they are making a special effort to make this laptop that deviates from their standard cancer in pic related by a lot. Most of their enterprise / contract customers are probably not going to buy this either as it's going to be labeled as an expensive niche product. Based on all this it's probably unlikely that they are going to release it.
