>there are people on /g/ who don't put their multiple GB of spare RAM to the most useful thing you possibly could

But, /g/ wouldn't be stupid enough to just leave it there doing nothing, would it?

Would it?

What are you even going to put on your ramdisk? Your pagefile? Come on, there's no legitimate reason to use ramdisk on a normal computer.

You put the browser on it. Whole thing. It makes Chrome retard-fast

i wish we had something like the amiga ram disk today

just drag an icon on to it and it just werks
>>
>>53932277
every OS uses free RAM as disk cache but it's not always the data that most affects you. It's often background disk reads/writes that don't affect your perceived performance. Manually putting an application on RAM disk will make it faster, while pushing out some of the background stuff that you don't notice anyway.

Could I make a 1GB RAM disk and put Firefox inside it? Since it never goes over ~500mb RAM usage it should be fine right? Would it run fasteR?
>>
>>53932481
You could have something a bit like it on Linux by just having a tmpfs mount on your desktop
>>
>>53932508
yeah i guess that's true but unfortunately i'm mostly stuck with windows
>>
>>53930214
Even 16GB of ram isn't enough to have 1GB of "spare" ram in 2016 thanks to the terrible, terrible browsers and websites of today.

I know what you mean. I have 2GB of RAM and I regularly use 16GB of RAM on Firefox alone.

Oh wait, you're a consumerist retard with buyer's remorse.

That's because Workbench had application directories.
You could have the same on Linux with ROX (which also gives you iconified windows on the desktop like on Workbench - try it if you're feeling nostalgic)
>>
>>53932557
So to be modern I should buy a new computer (since this is 32bit and can only have 4GB of memory), and then just carry on using 1GB of 16GB rather than 1GB of 2GB?

Should have used AmiWM.

But this thread makes me think: would this be a viable model for the Raspberry Pi? Just chip away at the install until you have the minimum of what you need, set aside a few hundred MB of RAM, and just copy the whole root partition to the memory on boot, and just have the home partition (which is written to a fraction of the amount of root) on a pen drive.

This would probably take a while to boot, but the Pi uses so little power you'd essentially just leave it up constantly.
>>
>>53933501
AmiWM lacks the features I'm used to with pekwm.

Isn't Linux already fairly smart about slow flash disks and keeps a lot of file i/o operations in cache for a while?

Back in the day I had a shit-rotten hard drive crash and while I waited for the new one to arrive I ran my bare essentials (workbench, a terminal, a text editor, etc) off of a 2MB recoverable ram disk rather than floppies.

I don't think that trick would still work today.
>>
>>53936190
It could, but no one is interested in making it work.

That applies to everything in modern computing, it seems. "It worked then, but it doesn't now."

What?
>>
>>53930214
Is there a way to do this reasonably on Windows? In Linux it only takes up the amount of space it needs to, but with Windows all the programs for this just block off a massive section of RAM and maybe place files there eventually.

I'd like to interject for a moment here.

What OP hints at is a different technology from the IMG OP provided.

Commodore had a RAM for storing OS DATA.

The current RAM as Disk Storage is another story.

...thank you for your attention, Sir.
>>
>>53936449
Unless you need the RAM, there's no real difference.

I have 64gb's of ram, OS running on a 256gb SSD, I have ~650gb's of SSD space for professional work stuff. I have absolutely no need for a ram disk.
>>
>>53936814
Nah mate. Nah. The RAM disk in AmigaOS is just another drive, just like what's being discussed.

Isn't it loaded to ram when you open it? Or do you mean starting the browser will be retard-fast?
>>
>>53940476
He means putting the browser and everything the browser might need from a hard drive. The whole program and all possibly required resources aren't loaded into RAM whenever you start a program, it's loads them as needed. Putting them in a speedy RAM disk means they can be loaded faster when the program decides to use them, but also means there's less usable RAM for the program to use. But if you've got RAM to burn anyway, I don't think there's any harm from it.
