When will it take off /g/?
This cable and port seem like a godsend, but no modern laptops use them. Im actually holding off purchasing a laptop until it has this and a firewire port.
Is the hype real, or should I purchase now instead?

You asked for modern laptops, I don't know POOP about your're unspecified requirements.

Poop!

XPS 15.
Just make sure you don't buy chink uncertified cables. You'll end up frying something.

Also note that if you want to charge your XPS with USB Type-C you need a USB PowerDelivery charger, e.g. Google Universal Type-C 60W, and the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45W is reported to work too.

Question.
I was under the impression that type c was the cable to end all cables. Are we just going to see it as a secondary type charger to official chargers/powersupplies? Or is it going to phase out proprietary chargers all together?

Right now I think it's solely the Dell XPS that has both, while the Macbook, Pixel C, and Spectre 13 are all charging over Type-C only. Signs point to Type-C taking over, and it makes sense. You need USB ports anyway, and now they support charging, so why have another dedicated port?
