if those things really existed even just for a novelty (not just some guy making it himself) i would buy one.

but ONLY if it made the sound of a floppy, and ONLY if you had a 50% chance of corrupting the data just like a floppy
>>
>>53900087
It's an SD card reader. He soldered an SD card reader to the contact pins of a floppy. It's still an SD card reader.

No floppy comeback.

I have a couple around to support my retro-computing hobby and many floppy discs as well.

I suppose I will have to stock up on packs of blank disks before they become fucking collector's items like punch cards are now.

I am old enough to actually have used a floppy (I'm 22) but I still have no idea why they had that piece of metal. I can guess it, but whatever.

literally why, it's not even practical, just "look guys I'm a 90s kid XDDD" hipster shit

>>53902847
can't you still buy packs of them at office supply stores? I've got a couple 100-packs but it still doesn't feel like enough, those things were garbage
>>

>>just a shitty SD card reader stuffed into a floppy disk

Those have poor compatibility though.
>>
>>53900208

An SD card reader that is seen by the OS as a floppy drive. Not necessarily very useful, but pretty interesting.
>>
>>53903881
This is disappointing. I was hoping he'd built an SD-powered floppy emulator, like a console flashcart, that worked in existing floppy drives.

Instead it's just an elaborate way to justify having a floppy slot on the front of his machine.

In the early '90s we traded porno .dl and .gl files, basically animated gifs.

One or two a floppy, only 15 seconds long or so but they'd loop so you could take your time.

I enjoy using them now, it's very soothing for some reason. Formatting a floppy isn't the chore it was 20 years ago.
>>
>>53904431
Look at the second webm, it's detected as a removable storage device. All he did was replace the data portions of the floppy drive with a separate SD card reader, aligned with the gap in the disk. The floppy drive is only being used as a lever to slide open the floppy disk, which is only being used as an SD card caddy.

There was an adapter to use SmartMedia cards in legitimate floppy drives

The idea was for a slightly larger/more reliable floppy stand-in for retro computing, not some mind-blowing new way to put old floppy drives to use. Obviously you wouldn't be transferring gigabytes of data over a goddamn floppy drive.

I had a friend whose Compaq had one of those.
We didn't know anyone else with that drive format, so it was useless for sneakernetting, and the disks weren't available at the local Office Depot, so it was limited to the 120MB disk it came with.

The most use we got out of it was laughing at how it was recognized as FLOPTICAL at boot.

>>53907370
They were super unreliable, you had to put the superdisks in two or three times to get them to read. For about two weeks I thought I was hot shit because mine was 20 MB bigger than a Zip. The LS120 was grinding, the Zip was clicking, and we all went back to CDRs until flash drives happened a couple of years later.

I still have my LS120 drive. I last used it around 2001 to migrate a disk for a friend. It was porn and I kept a copy for myself.

Floppy drive emulators are available. Most of them mount in a 3.5" external bay, interface with a floppy cable, and store multiple floppy images on a single piece of flash media.

>>53904034

Perfect for a restomod beige box, that's why

Imagine the looks when you hit the power button on a computer from 1995 and Windows 7 appears in 5 seconds
>>
>>53908160
I wish I knew these existed before, I've got a couple shoeboxes full of floppy drives as spares in case any of my old computers loses one, and the discs are rare where I am.
That shit would be so much easier, I'll have to toss a couple in my server and see how it copes.
