Reviews are in:
http://isitvr.com/2016/04/06/htv-vive-reviews-need/

Every review bottom line seems uncertain about the Vive. Lets hope this thing makes valve release Half Life 3 so they can sell it!
>>
I don't think the market for VR is not gonna be gaming for now, maybe in 2-3 years when the devices are smaller and cheaper.
>>

Maan if they have to release HL3 just to sell that piece of plastic...

>>

>>

>>53897153
Most of the stuff that currently exists are just more or less demos, but there are some games that are actually pretty good.

The thing is that this technology is obviously pretty new, and with both the vive and the rift hitting the market more developers will have the chance to get to work, so imo your guess with 2-3 years should be pretty accurate.

Although, I have to say, all the games I have tried so far are pretty awesome, I spent 2 hours in job simulator doing 2 of the 4 'levels' and it was nothing but fun.
Audioshield is also nice and has endless potential because you can use your own music, which works surprisingly well.

>>
>>53897585
DUDE you got the Vive ?
How is it? What setup are you using?
and can you watch videos or movies with it ?
>>
It's a gimmick like the 3D televisions, nobody wants to strap things to their face for hours a day

It might find some cool niche uses for education and professional stuff but for entertainment I think many of them are going to be collecting dust on peoples' shelves
>>
>>53897623
Yep I received it yesterday.
I use a 2m x 2m room-scale setup.

I bought virtual desktop, which enables you to render your acutal screens in a 3d space, in there you can watch videos with it (there's also a cinema-like space you can use which projects your screen in there, which is pretty neat.
In virtual desktop you can also watch 3d videos (off of youtube or off of your drive, if you have any) or look at 3d pictures.
>>
>>53897697
Got any good cuck porn yet?
>>
>>53897645
>nobody wants to strap things to their face for hours a day

That depends on how it actually feels, the vive is REALLY comfortable to wear, I have spent about 6 hours without break having it on without problems.

>>53897716
VR (..cuck..) porn sucks.
I have downloaded some demos and they are not up to scale so people look like they're 50m giants.
Maybe vr porn games will do the trick but there are none for the vive so far.
>>
>>53897697
SO COOOOOOOLLLLLLL
So is there a need for having a monitor ?
I wanna get rid of my giant monitors and just use one 20 inch one and do all the other fun stuff on a VR headset.
>>

>>
>>53897585
>The thing is that this technology is obviously pretty new, and with both the vive and the rift hitting the market more developers will have the chance to get to work,
actually the tech has been around since the 90s (i used it then). The problem is no one has been able to even conceptualize a killer app
>>
Need decent omni directional running, jumping, crouching and sitting with VR. Then it'll be perfect. There's a few platforms that do this right now, but it's all preorder.
>>
Wait, so games have to be compatible? I cant just get the latest piece of shit cod or cs and play in 3d?
>>
>>53897742
What virtual desktop does is capturing your real monitors and project them in the 3d environment.

So I guess if you could somehow have 'fake monitors' that would work but unless you get that to work you still need your monitor(s).

>>53897766
yay

>>53897769
I know that some form of VR has existed for a pretty long time now, but actual VR headsets like these will make the difference.

Room-scale VR is so fucking amazing that you don't really want to leave it because it is so fucking immersive.

Imagine having your all time favorite game, you always 'looked at' through a 'window'.
Now imagine you standing in the middle of it, able to move around look around and 'touch' stuff.

>>53897789
For room scale yes, for other games you could render the game twice and have one viewport offset to the left and the other offset to the right and then control the head movement with the hmd.
AFAIK there is software being developed that does this, I don't know how far they are with that or how soon that will actually be released.
>>
>>53897816
Thanks man, you seem very educated on the subject
>>
>>53897816
>Imagine having your all time favorite game, you always 'looked at' through a 'window'.

my favorite game is devil may cry 3/4 and fighters
>>
>>53897860
not >>53897816
but you can use the vive controllers to punch stuff and do combos not just a joystick.
Now then, what's the real reason for hatin?
>>
I've thought about the problems with VR in the past, and I've come to the conclusion that the biggest problem with current VR headsets is that you can't do cool diverolls. They're WAY too bulky to be doing some cool ninja shit.
>>
>>53897860
Welp, I guess fighter could be pretty fun when you have to dodge shit etc, it would be a little slower in VR since you actually need to do shit with your body but it could be fun.
That's just speculating, of course, we need to wait for people to test these things.
>>
>>53897910

Im worried about executing my roundhouse kicks tbqh
>>
>>53897927
Vive can probably fix that with the camera, but the wire might get wrapped around you or some shit.
>>
>>53897910
That's true, I mean you can strap the vive down pretty tight and it will not move at all no matter how you move (even upside down works) but doing really fast movements could be a problem.

Also the cord would suck for that.
>>
>>53897910

Next year or 2 years from now when they release a slimmer wireless version of the products we can probably expect better games because of better controls
>>

>>

Bad because VR is the future and you may fall of the bandwagon

I was actually worried that my vive isn't what I hoped for because of some reviews.

I would be so butthurt if Valve released HL3 for the first-gen VR devices. It would inevitably be shit.
>>
>>53898089
If I remember that correctly, valve has said that they probably won't have VR in their new games.
I can't really believe that tho.
But they wouldn't make it exclusive, also a shooter would most likely be a seated experience.

>>53898089

Anybody have one and try using it for exercise yet? I'm most worried about lens fogging and once I get a comparison review I'll buy whichever is best for that
>>
>>53898180
Well I didn't play with the target of exercising but the games can be exhausting.
I tend to begin sweating on my head and face before I do anywhere else, so my face was pretty sweaty after playing a while.
The lens did not get foggy and I had no problems with my vision or anything.
>>

why would you use it for exercise?

>>53898228
Thanks, that's probably about as good a review as I can expect for now. I really don't like the idea of stand-up VR without an omni or a cyberith and like the cyberith better but it is just way too pricy. I've been waiting since palmer first suggested a group buy on mtbs3d years ago. I can wait a bit more, at least until the next Gen of gpus

Ok this almost got me, there are a very few games that worked amazingly with 3dvision such as lego lotr or tomb raider underworld that almost seemed like I had plastic toys in front of me. Still, I'm going to wait for better hardware to appear both in vr and computing before making the jump.

>>53897120
The way I see it there is just no genre of game that this is good for. Hear me out. The room scale and motion hand controllers are great but the big glaring issue is you can only walk a few steps. So for moving longer distances in-game you need to warp around or your character needs to walk while you stand still which ruins immersion and feels stupid. What about games where you are in a vehicle? The problem with the headset for driving games or flight sims or whatever is right now a traditional monitor is better for that. The resolution is just too low on the headset. For seeing the next corner on a track or the ground from your plane it's just too blurry. So what exactly is the Vive for? A game where you stand up and move around but don't go more than 3 feet or so, a genre which doesn't exist (for good reason). They are trying to make it exist with some of the launch titles but they are just silly tech demo type things like lmao job simulator.

Before you buy one of these things think long and hard about what you are going to play on it.
>>
>>53897903
>but you can use the vive controllers to punch stuff and do combos not just a joystick.
>Now then, what's the real reason for hatin?
absolutely ridiculous for DMC / fighting games. I do so many actions per second and they're all ridiculous looking jumping in the air type shit
>>
>>53898477
Mostly true, but even with the shitty res of DK1 when I strapped a hydra to my head and got it all configured right the ability to lean forward or right or left and turn your head to look into a turn on Dirt 3 was phenomenal.
>>
>>53898477
This
The better resolution compared to oculus is a plus tho and if steam has their name plastered on it there should be continued game support at least for 2 years

a mouse rests on a desk. Motion controls require flailing your arms around for hours on end. Subtle flicks of a vive controller are no better than having a dual shock that you can rest on your leg. Are you seriously not getting this ?!

>>
Does anyone want me to test anything with my vive?
>>
>>53899115
You are right, they are really bad for those games, in order for them to be good the games have to be molded from the beginning to be played with them because you won't have more fun playing Tetris with motion controls just because you can flail your arms.

It literally adds another dimension. You probably cant add something larger than that, I have a 3dtv, 3d monitor, and 3d blu rays.
>>
>>53898477
You really should read what users who use this for driving and flying sims think as you are way off. Those are actually the prefect type of game for this tech currently. More so than any other type of game. I pre-ordered strictly to use with DCS, ROF, iRacing, Dirt Rally..etc. These games are currently the best implementation for VR, any cockpit based sim is a natural match for a VR headset.

The people who use it currently and have used it don't report any of the issues you state.

I have a dk2 and I can tell you, it's not a gimmick and it greatly enhances your experience in certain games like elite dangerous for example. It probably won't catch on though until it is a little cheaper, £600 is more than most people are willing to spend.

If you are going to get one I'd definitely get the vive, the camera is very important as it can be used to put your hands into VR and for augmented reality.

Sony VR will do a good job killing the VR hype for normies.

Apparently is done so cheap, not only the motion tracking is complete balls but it causes dizzines after a couple of hours, when your average /v/ermin buys the Sony VR to play COD on the PS4 he will instantly make a thread, a twit and whatever about how the VR is a gimmick, it's dead on the water and the other /v/ermins will parrot this 'til oblivion.

Thats not how gen works in terms of electronic devices. for example 8th gen being the ps4 doesnt mean that there were 8 versions of the ps4.
>>
>>53902325
2nd gen see this >>53902464 for what I meant. I see this as the first gen of proper wide-scale consumer focussed VR with a real chance of success.
>>
>>53902525
He's right
>>53902512
But that doesn't change the fact that the first 2 versions were only touch ups compared to the final product and we can expect major changes for the next consumer models as there will be a price drop and probably plans for slimmer lighter models.
>>
>>53902558
Not to mention that no one even knows what the fuck to do with VR. Working out what works well and what doesn't will probably take a few years, and then the next consumer model can work off of that.

Again, they've already had over 20 years to think about it and they still have nothing. It's like when John Carmack comes up with something that could be considered new and then it just goes into another FPS, like Doom 12. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_reality#History
